Tennessee Aquarium

Tennessee Aquarium A remarkable journey from the mountains to the sea! Within our two buildings, you’ll trace the path of water from the mountains to the sea.

Come face-to-face with the fascinating native animals that live in our backyards and the amazing creatures that thrive in some of the most remote locations on Earth. We celebrate the rich biodiversity of the Southeast through our exhibits and are actively engaged in preserving and restoring that biodiversity through our work in the field.

Snakes are all around us in the Southeast. They burrow below ground, slither through leaf litter on the forest floor and climb along vines and branches in search of food and warm resting places.

After tending the Aquarium garden for 32 years, Senior Horticulturist Charlene Nash is retiring. From sourcing cypress knees to teaching African farmers, her career has been diverse and far-reaching. Read more in our digital magazine!

For more than 32 years and 28 million visitors, the Tennessee Aquarium's glass-enclosed peaks have been the signature flourish to Chattanooga's downtown skyline. When Senior Horticulturist Charlene Nash applied to join the Aquarium's ranks, however, its...

Happy Shark Week, y’all! Who’s up for a late lunchtime live with our Sandbar and Sand Tiger Shark from above our Secret Reef exhibit? (All of you? We thought so.)

As usual, we’re able to bring you this behind-the-scenes live content thanks to ongoing support from Food City!

OK, we have to execute a quick Shark Week detour to show off the juvenile Lake Sturgeon that just arrived at the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute! More than 2,500 of these teeny, tiny river giants are now swimming in our grow-out systems, but ... we're already in love and pumped to care for them this summer before releasing them into the Tennessee River!

If the current weather conditions have you dreaming of cooler locales, it might be time for an Aquarium visit (and not only for the AC!)

Approximate water temps inside our chilliest habitats:
Giant Pacific Octopus: 49°F
Penguins’ Rock: 42°F
Vancouver Island: 53°F
Brook Trout: 58°F

FIVE-ALARM FLOOF ALERT!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Check out the insane speed at which our newest penguin chick has been growing!

Less than four weeks after hatching, it grew from 146 grams (5 ounces) to an extraordinary 1,896 grams (3.5 POUNDS). That's a mind-blowing 1,300% increase in body weight!

For the time being, the chick will continue to grow in the safety of an enclosed nesting site in the exhibit. Once it has replaced its coating of down with waterproof adult feathers and passed an off-exhibit "swim test," it will be allowed to join the rest of the colony in the water!

If you're feeling like your world is turned upside down, you could be having a bad day, or you might just be a Ternetzi Headstander taking a nibble on the bottom of a submerged branch. (It's worth checking, just to be sure!) Our senior aquarist loves these little South American beauties and thinks you should take your time to look for them the next time you're in our Rivers of the World gallery!

When we say "Look closer" during your Aquarium visit, sometimes we mean that literally. There are plenty of animals you might never spot without looking a little hard at each exhibit, but there are just as many - like this Freshwater Pipefish - who reveal incredible colors, patterns and textures when you look at them up close.

We can't talk without mentioning the Pollinator Pathway! 🐝🦋🦇 As visitors enjoy gardens on the Aquarium plaza and across the street at the IMAX 3D Theater, they can discover the importance of the world’s pollinators and the ways we all can help protect them and their natural habitats. Look for these panels on your next visit!

Tennessee Aquarium’s Pollinator Pathway is supported by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT)’s Pollinator Habitat Program.

In honor of Pollination Week this year, we decided we'd use a sweet treat (read: honey!) to encourage our Red-ruffed Lemurs to demonstrate how they use their incredibly long tongues to earn their title as one of the world's largest pollinators!
