During the recent influx of polar weather to the Southeast, temperatures outside the Aquarium have plunged to well below freezing, and ice has built up inside the Appalachian Cove Forest. Don't worry, though ... that's by design!
This gallery fluctuates naturally with external temperatures, so conditions inside are usually within eight degrees of ambient. However, North American River Otters have a thick pelt that allows them to pop in and out of the (comparatively balmy) 62-degree water without issue, even when rare cold snaps hit Chattanooga.

The traditional view of plants has them pegged as being pretty placid, but there are a handful that buck that reputation by luring in and eating insects! Our senior aquarist recommends taking the time to appreciate one beautiful example of this unusual adaptation in the gorgeous Pitcher Plants (aka nepenthes) growing in our Tropical Cove gallery!

The cold snap in the South has our Cove Forest gallery looking pretty chill. 🥶

We're Totally 😍 OBSESSED 😍 With These Baby Pipefish!
About a month ago, a male Long-mouth Freshwater Pipefish hatched a new brood of fry in our Rivers of the World gallery. Since then, these baby syngnathids have been steadily growing up in the safety of a home behind the scenes. They'll stay here until they've grown large enough to safely rejoin their parents in our Freshwater Pipefish exhibit.
Until then, we're just going to be right over ... here ... watching and falling in love with them. Don't mind us.

Tiny Wows: You'll Go Hog Wild For This Porcine-Snouted Turtle!
Think you know all there is to know about turtles? Well, our painter would suggest slowing down to re-evaluate that belief with a visit to our Fly River exhibit! The aptly named Pig-nosed Turtle has flippers and a distinctly porcine snout that make it stand out from the many other turtles that call the Aquarium "home!"

Houseplant Appreciation Day! 🌿
No green thumb required! 🌿✨
For Houseplant Appreciation Day, we’re getting the inside scoop from one of our horticulturists, Jenna Paler, on two of the easiest plants to love and care for!
Heartleaf Philodendron:
• Bright, indirect light (a few feet from a south or west window)
• Keep out of reach of pets 🚫
• Super easy to propagate
Peperomias:
• Medium to bright, indirect light ☀️
