Osteosarcoma (OSA) is a bone cancer most commonly found in large or giant breeds of dogs. These tumor types are highly aggressive, characterized by painful bone destruction where the tumor grows. For most dogs with OSA in the long limbs, amputation of the limb is the best option to alleviate pain and remove the tumor at its source. Chemotherapy can typically follow amputation surgery to help slow the spread of bone tumor cells, adding to prolonging a good quality of life. The biggest misnomer of limb amputation is that most dogs/cats would have a hard time adjusting to life with 3 legs, when in fact in most cases, they don't even know they are missing it! Chemotherapy is dosed at a rate of stopping the spread of the cancer cells and while it is not a cure, it can extend their life and improve the quality of it for an average of 12 months, with 25% of dogs living longer than 2 years. *This information is based off clinical studies at CSU. Not all animals are candidates for surgery and/or chemotherapy based off their exact case.
Birdie Mae was diagnosed with OSA in her left front leg in January 2021. She presented to her primary vet for limping and was quickly sent over to our internal medicine service for a workup based on her radiographs that showed an abnormality in her radial/ulna area. A bone biopsy was performed that unfortunately confirmed our suspicions of osteosarcoma. After meeting with one of our oncologists, Birdie Mae was scheduled for a leg amputation and started her chemotherapy once her healing was complete! Birdie has recovered without issue and is flying through her chemo appointments like a champ!!!
May you forever outrun the FedEx truck!
