For years, fluoxetine (Prozac) has been pushed as the answer to behavioral problems in dogs. Veterinary behaviorists and force-free advocates love to cite “science-backed” studies to justify long-term medication use. But here’s a big problem, most of these studies are flawed, biased, and rely almost entirely on owner-reported data.
Take, for example, the 2009 study on fluoxetine for compulsive disorders in dogs (Irimajiri et al., J Am Vet Med Assoc). It claimed fluoxetine helped, yet the only improvement came from owners’ OPINIONS, not actual behavioral measurements. When researchers looked at objective data the dogs’ actual behavior logs they found NO SIGNIFICANT difference between the medicated and placebo groups. But guess which result gets cited?🤫
How about the 2007 study on fluoxetine for separation anxiety (Simpson et al., Veterinary Therapeutics). The conclusion? Fluoxetine was effective … but only when paired with a structured behavior modification plan. And yet, thousands of dogs are medicated without any meaningful training, as if a pill can replace actual learning.
Sad reality is that Dogs are being drugged, not rehabilitated.
Ask any serious trainer what happens when they get a dog that’s been on fluoxetine for years. They take the dog off the meds, implement a sound training plan, and SHOCKINGLY the dog improves.
Not because fluoxetine “worked,” but because the dog finally got what it needed: clarity and proper training.
Yet, the AVSAB keeps pushing these medications while dismissing legitimate training as “aversive” or “outdated.” They’d rather chemically suppress behavior than actually address it.
The real question isn’t whether fluoxetine has some effect but why so many dogs improve when you REMOVE the drug and train them properly?!!!
Behavioral change comes from learning, not sedation. It’s time to stop pretending otherwise.
I know I am not the only one noticing that dogs on fluoxetine don’t get better - they just get dull.
The dog isn’t learning or adapting, just becoming more passive.
This can actuallY DELAY proper rehabilitation, because the dog’s emotions and responses are chemically suppressed rather than modified through learning.
Thinking about making a solo podcast to talk about the dog I have in training right now, one of the many that end up euthanized after YEARS of being on SSRI’s and the pandemic of prescribing psychotropics like flea medication

We’ve been downstate dropping Poppy off with her owners, spending some quality time with my parents, and soaking up a little family time before we hit the road again! This Friday, Jeremy and I are heading to Arkansas to celebrate our nephew Jack’s 1st birthday!

We have a few in person consultations lined up while we’re down here, then we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming on February 24th back in the Mackinaw City/Cheboygan area with a few more in person consultations! I’ll try to post updates when I can in the meantime. For now, Kino and Piper are on official “supervisor duty” while their Gamma whips up dinner and brownies!

Thanks for your understanding as we take a little family time in between working with clients! 🤗

Our sweet Poppy girl went home last night, and everything went beautifully! It was an extra special reunion, not only are her owners local to my parents, but one of them is actually my mom’s cardiologist. She got to tag along for her “go home,” which felt incredibly full circle. Back in December 2020, he detected that my mom was having an active heart attack and took quick action, without him, she likely wouldn’t be here with us today.

Sending a dog home is always bittersweet. After all their hard work, they finally get to be reunited with their families, but it’s impossible not to get attached. As a trainer, you pour your heart and soul into these dogs, helping them and their owners in the best ways that you possibly can. Poppy will definitely be missed, especially by Kino, who was absolutely in love with her! Luckily, this isn’t goodbye forever. We’ll still get to see plenty of her in the future, whether it’s for visits or some brush up training. See you soon, Poppy girl! 🥹💕

Poppy girl went on one last big adventure before heading home to The Thumb tomorrow! We took her to one of our favorite dog friendly spots, Cheboygan Brewing Company!! She did an awesome job soaking up the sights and sounds, though there were a few moments when she needed a little guidance to settle back into her down. But overall, she crushed it! She made lots of new friends, and we even had people comment that they didn’t even realize she was there because she was so calm and well behaved!

We’re going to miss our sweet Poppy girl, but we know she’s going to do amazing once she’s back home!! Her buddy, Kino, is going to miss her most of all!! 🥹 *Photos in previous post because it won’t allow me to upload photos/videos together*

Poppy’s owners aren’t too concerned about public outings, but we still want to get her out on a field trip before she heads home! Some families want their dogs to be able to go everywhere with them, while others have different priorities. That’s why our programs are tailored to each individual dog and their owner’s goals.

For Poppy, the focus has been on recall, “leave it,” and “out,” while fine tuning the rest of her obedience and leash skills, and we’ve done just that! Tomorrow, Poppy and I head downstate, and she’ll be reunited with her family on Saturday! We really are going to miss her around here!

I’ve been trying for days to get a solid video showing off Poppy’s freedom and recall, but this girl makes it very difficult without turning it into a full length feature film! 🤣 She sticks by me beautifully, which I love, but it doesn’t make for the best demonstration when I’m trying to get more reps in. So, we take advantage of those little organic moments where she’s even slightly distracted to call her back. Kino has been a fantastic built in distraction, and we’ve been working outside with both of them to up the challenge. I’m not giving up!! I will get you a better video of her in action! 😅

Miss Poppy loves her cozy spot! After some training and playtime with Kino, she happily settled in for a little snooze while we made and enjoyed dinner. Nothing like a well earned nap! 😴

More down and sit stays! It’s freezing out, but that’s not stopping us from putting in the work. Took some quick clips to show you a little of what this looks like!

When Poppy first arrived, she struggled with the down command and couldn’t stay in a sit if you took even one step away. Walking behind a dog can also be a big challenge, as it often makes them want to break position, so we’ve put in plenty of practice on that, too!

She even did great when I went all the way to the end of the driveway! This girl has put in some fantastic work! Way to go, Poppy!

I’ve been meaning to upload this for hours, but it’s been a non stop day! Poppy and I were getting ready to clean the training space, because after all her and Kino’s playtime over the weekend, there was hair everywhere! 😂

It turned into the perfect opportunity to practice her down and sit stays. I teach both with an implied stay, meaning she holds the position until released. You’ll see in the last video that she broke position, but that’s actually a great learning moment! I simply guided her back and reinforced my expectations. Dogs need to make mistakes in order to learn. If we don’t allow that, we’re only holding them (and ourselves) back from growth.

As always, Poppy did an amazing job! Proud of this girl!

It was a challenge, but we somehow managed to snag this photo of sweet Archie staying still for a moment! 😂

Archie, the 2.5 year old Goldendoodle, stopped by with his sister Zoey, the Great Dane, and their older, but little brother Oscar, the Dachshund! Archie is the main focus for training, as he struggles with reactivity, guarding behaviors toward his sister, and lots of excitement. He’ll be joining us in April, and while he’s here, his owners will be practicing their new skills and working with Zoey to help set everyone up for success in the home.

We’re so excited to have Archie join us and to work with his amazing owners!

I train dogs and cut hair! Just Jeremy’s that is! 😂 Poor Poppy got banished to the bathroom with us because Kino insisted on his usual front row seat to the show! 😅 As always, she handled it like a champ and was such a good girl! 🥰
