"Karen Pryor’s clear and entertaining explanation of behavioral training methods made Don’t Shoot the Dog a bestselling classic with revolutionary insights into animal—and human—behavior.

In her groundbreaking approach to improving behavior, behavioral biologist Karen Pryor says, “Whatever the task, whether keeping a four-year-old quiet in public, housebreaking a puppy, coaching a team, or memorizing a poem, it will go fast, and better, and be more fun, if you know how to use reinforcement.”

Now Pryor clearly explains the underlying principles of behavioral training and reveals how this art can be applied to virtually any common situation. And best of all, she tells how to do it without yelling threats, force, punishment, guilt trips—or shooting the dog. From the eight methods for putting an end to all kinds of undesirable behavior to the ten laws of “shaping” behavior, Pryor helps you combat your own addictions and deal with such difficult problems as a moody spouse, an impossible teen, or an aged parent. Plus, there’s also incredibly helpful information on house training the dog, improving your tennis game, keeping the cat off the table, and much more!"

What does Gimme 5 Dog Training mean for us?

It sounds kinda silly to some but it is actually a fun reference to a scientific learning principle called distributed learning. It works well for almost all dogs but especially well with Sighthounds.

Read on for an in depth overview:

The Values of Distributed Learning in Dog Training

Dog training plays a crucial role in fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and their canine companions. Traditional training methods previously relied on a one-size-fits-all approach, but with advancements in animal behavior research, distributed learning has emerged as a highly effective and humane technique. Distributed learning, also known as spaced repetition or incremental training, focuses on breaking down complex behaviors into smaller, manageable steps. This essay explores the values of distributed learning in dog training and highlights its benefits for both dogs and their owners. 5 minutes or less is easy to fit in your day and done a few times a day, will yield major training gains.

1. Enhanced Retention:
One of the key values of distributed learning in dog training is its ability to enhance retention. Instead of bombarding dogs with extensive training sessions, distributed learning allows for shorter, more frequent sessions spread over time. This approach strengthens their understanding and memory of commands, resulting in improved long-term retention. Dogs are more likely to retain and generalize their training when it is distributed across various contexts and environments. This is a perfect fit for most Sighthounds. Making dinner? Ask for a few sits and downs while waiting for that pot to boil. Out for some errands? Ask for a nice heel while walking through crowds and release when in a less crowded area.

2. Reduced Stress:
Distributed learning promotes a stress-free training environment for dogs. Unlike intensive training sessions that can overwhelm and exhaust them, distributed learning focuses on short, positive interactions. This approach reduces anxiety and frustration, allowing dogs to remain engaged, motivated, and eager to participate. The incremental nature of distributed learning ensures that dogs progress at their own pace, building their confidence along the way. Some dogs thrive with intensive training and multiple repetitions but Sighthounds are not typically one of the breeds that does enjoy intense training and that needs to be respected. If you are at a class, respect when your hound indicates that they are done, which usually looks like a lack of engagement. If you’re working with a trainer that doesn’t respect that choice, find a new trainer. Your hound will thank you for it and give you more in the future. It’s a partnership, not a dictatorship.

3. Flexibility and Adaptability:
Another value of distributed learning is its flexibility and adaptability to individual dog's needs and learning styles. Since every dog is unique, distributed learning allows trainers to tailor the training process to suit their specific requirements. By breaking down behaviors into smaller steps and gradually increasing difficulty, trainers can easily adjust the training plan based on each dog's progress and capabilities. This personalized approach ensures that dogs receive training that is suitable for their temperament, abilities, and learning preferences. Bottom line - train the dog in front of you on that day. Not every day will be perfect. We all have bad or less than perfect days. Give your dog the grace to do the same.

4. Strengthened Bond:
Distributed learning strengthens the bond between dogs and their owners. By engaging in regular, positive training sessions, owners have the opportunity to spend quality time with their dogs, promoting trust, communication, and mutual understanding. The incremental achievements during training build a positive reinforcement loop, fostering a deeper connection between humans and their furry companions. This bond extends beyond the training sessions, enhancing overall obedience and cooperation.

Distributed learning has revolutionized dog training by offering a humane and effective approach that is tailored to individual dogs. Its values, such as enhanced retention, reduced stress, flexibility, and strengthened bonds, make it a preferred method for modern dog trainers. By utilizing distributed learning techniques, owners can establish a positive training environment that promotes long-term learning, happiness, and a lasting relationship with their canine companions. As the world continues to evolve, it is essential to embrace and promote training methods that prioritize the well-being and welfare of our four-legged friends. Listen to the hound in front of you and that respect will be returned beyond your expectations.

Yes, Sighthounds can do scent work and do it well. Watch Kirin knock out 4 hidden handler discrimination hides as we try harder hides with a new material.

This is a full and unedited video. 3 outside hides and one inside hide. Lots of distractions for a Sighthound!

I am wearing a harness that hold my camera, so that is why he may go in and out of frame.

My goal when training is to train beyond the level we are working on. By working towards a higher or harder level, when we compete, it should be “easier.”

Training 6 Sighthounds - Snuggle time! 🥰

Any animal that loves and trusts you will always do more for you. As will an animal who feels safe, secure and therefore confident.

Enjoying quality time with your hounds is an important key to success in any ring or field.

Training 6 Sighthounds - 5 minutes or less!

Even if you are not competing, teaching basic manners and behaviors is important for a happy life cohabitating with your hounds. All behaviors can be taught is short sessions of 5 minutes or less. Multiple sessions but each should be 5 minutes or less.

Perfect time for this is a mealtime. This gives you 2 to 3 possible sessions per day with a very high value reward. This also helps teach impulse control, an important lesson for puppies.

- Teach a sit stay.
- Teach leave it.
- Teach a stand stay for conformation.
- Teach a new trick.
- Reteach appropriate behavior for desensitization of a fear based reaction.
Whaaat??? 🤓
We have used meal times to get dogs that hate nail trims to allow nails to be cut. It is a gradual but very successful way to work through this issue.

Training 6 Sighthounds 🤔 The myths 💁‍♀️

- If you teach a conformation dog to sit, it will ruin them. NEVER teach them to sit.
Honestly?? Your dog is smarter than that. Use different collars when training for conformation vs obedience as well as different commands. We use heel for obedience and rally for a focused heel. For conformation we use “with me” to ask for gaiting on lead. They know the difference after just a little training.

- It takes too much time. I have a job and I run my business and and and…
Sorry, these are lame excuses. If you don’t want to train your dog and you are content with their behavior as well as their level of enrichment, that is fine. But if you are not, then carve out time to train. Seriously, you don’t need a ton of time every day. 10 minutes a day will accomplish amazing things. 5 minutes will build solid bridges to amazing training, especially with Sighthounds!!
- Cooking dinner? Ask for a few sits and downs.
- Commercial break for your TV show? Teach a new trick
- Just got off the phone? Ask for a stand and stay.
- Make a deck of cards of items you want to teach. Pull one per day and focus on that item. Every time you see your dog, ask for or work on teaching that behavior for 5 minutes or less.

- Sighthounds are hard to train and so independent and stubborn.
Not completely untrue but it simply requires remembering to train the dog in front of you and sometimes that means doing things a bit differently for each one.
- Repetition is something most don’t like, so break up the sessions with different behaviors. Heel, sit and down for example.
- Free choice works well with them if you can work in an enclosed area. This simply means giving them the choice to play training games or not for treats. This helps with gaiting nicely on a loose lead in conformation as well as working on a loose lead in obedience.
- Most Sighthounds don’t work for free and you will get more from them when you offer payment for behaviors. Every behavior when teaching and at varied intervals once they have learned it.
- Train the dog in front of you. What works on one may not work on another. Just like kids, some catch on to certain skills faster. Everyone has their talents.

What is not a myth?
The love we all share for our hounds!! 🥰

Wolfhound obedience can be a bit of an oxymoron at times…

You just have to laugh it off on those days where they decide they have no idea what you are talking about. 😂

Although you may not believe me after watching this video, he has since earned 2 obedience titls. 🤣

Some days in the ring are awesome, some are not. As IW trainer and person who competes in a variety of sports with our dogs, I learned this early on. I put m...

2022 is well on it's way and dog events are opening up!!

What are you and your hound looking forward to this year?

Going to try something new? Working on getting a next level title in your favorite event?

We are giving scent work a bit of an exploratory sniff and the hounds all seem to love it and I love learning to train a different sport. It is perfect for an older hound like Kirin because it is very low impact and energy.

We entered our first trail end of April, so off we go practicing as often as we can.

Consistency is key! 😉

Consistency is key! 😉

The way dogs have come to understand the nuances of human language is incredibly impressive for an animal that doesn't speak words itself.

12/09/2021

Respect when they say no to training. There’s always another day to play.

Training should be positive and fun for everyone and respecting when your hound doesn’t feel like it will go far in building your bond. 😊

Having a sense of humor about it all helps as well. 😂🐾😂

Correct structure and muscle will make happier and healthier Irish Wolfhounds. We’ve shared many posts about the standard and it’s also important for our hounds to be engaged. There are an infinite number of ways to do that. There are an incredible number of performance events that wolfhounds enjoy. These include rally, scent work, coursing, obedience, agility, straight track racing, tracking, and more. Share your experience in performance events. Are there ones that you think our hounds particularly enjoy and are suited for?
