Changes are on the horizon!

We are currently not doing spays/neuters, but are instead finishing up our remodel to include:
*a CAT CAFE!!!
*an adoption center with visiting rooms!
*a larger low-income, low-cost spay/neuter space (and very likely spay/neuter for dogs up to 15 #!)
*a low-cost night vet (not emergency, so actually affordable!) for low-income cat owners

We will again be performing spays/neuters later this year (if all goes well with the remodel) and be able to offer all of the above services as well!

But....we need your help! Please consider donating to our efforts so we can do even more for you and the cats you love! Changes are on the horizon!

GET THOSE CATS FIXED!!!!

Drop off/pick up on the same day. No more over-night stays and long drives to Lynnwood in our bus!

We have our very own spay/neuter facility in Chehalis with a licensed vet and licensed vet tech performing surgeries.

Plenty of appointments available (for low-income households (per DOH) as we are a non-profit).

***Females - $130, males - $80....and a free RABIES vaccine is always included!!***

Lots of extra services available (see prices online) - combo test, leukemia vaccine, distemper vaccine, flea control, roundworm medication, tapeworm treatment, ear mite check, ear mite treatment, nail trim, microchip, ID tag, breakaway collar!!

We can also repair hernias, perform crypt surgeries on males, safely remove extra claws for polydactyls (those little ones in-between the extra toes that keep growing into the foot), safely spay females in heat, and/or administer a long-acting systemic antibiotic (Convenia) for cats with abscesses/wounds/etc.

Please DO NOT SCHEDULE PREGNANT FEMALES, cats that are sick or kittens under 3 months (they must be at least 3 months for the Rabies vaccine).

See www.fixthecat.org to make your reservation. As a non-profit trying to keep costs down (and surgeries affordable), we do not have staff to monitor and answer Facebook. If you have questions that aren’t answered on the website, please TEXT 360-623-0820.

We at The Cat's Meow want to thank everyone for their support over the past almost 15 years!

Our director, Twila Collins, has been super busy running our spay/neuter program, assisting The Almost Home Project (directed by Patty Kaija) with their adoption program and overseeing the remodel of The Almost Home Coalition building at 611 NW State Avenue in Chehalis, WA.

We want to thank the vets that have helped us along the way: Dr. Ann Langer, Dr. Pamela Powell, Dr. Amy Starr, Dr. Annika Iverson and Dr. Jennifer Madden....and the techs: Dannielle Hood, Terra Hamilton and Andrea Barr. A huge thank you to all of the volunteers and donors, too!! We would list them, but there are sooo many, we would be here all day!!

Moving forward, we would like to let you know what we are up to at our location on State Avenue.

Since 4.3.21 we have been performing spays and neuters in a small, remodeled section of the building that was the former office. You may have also noticed that the outside of the building has been undergoing change. 1 1/2 years ago we had four of the six walls painted blue. Then started changes to the two parking-lot walls - roll up doors were removed, windows and doors were added, rotting posts were replaced and walls were straightened, and an awning was built...oh, yes, and a new roof was installed! This spring, we are having the siding installed and when the weather warms up a bit, it will be painted. The fence is being straightened, painted black, having new fabric installed and having a new gate installed, as well. Then we'll clean and reseal the parking lot, add wheel stops and repaint parking lines. Phew!

Inside, we have been tearing away old metal, sheetrock, conduit, lights, etc (all of which are in the way of our new plans!)

Here is a list of new services that will be added: large adoption area with sitting rooms so folks can visit with kittens/cats before adopting, a cafe, a full-service vet hospital that will be open at night, a larger spay/neuter area (that may eventually serve small dogs, too) and a cat grooming room!!!!

Your help makes this all possible. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here: https://www.catsmeowsnap.org/donate (scroll to the bottom and click the cat with helping hands!)
If you would like to donate, you can do so here (consider making it monthly): https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=VW8NDPR65A4C6&ssrt=1709933738374

Thank you again for all of your help!

FIX THOSE CATS!!

Boys, boys, boys - get 'em fixed now before they become sexually mature and start spraying, fighting... and possibly running off to find females and never returning.

Keep in mind, too - females cats can get pregnant at only 3 months (not common, but possible) and mom cats can get pregnant as early as 48 hours after giving birth (again, not common, but possible)....soooo.... keep any female over 3 months confined and away from intact males (or sexually mature males that have been fixed less than 30 days ago - yes, their s***m can survive that long! )

Female cat spays and male cat neuters are now available to book online.

Thank you so much to those who have helped so far at The Cat's Meow fair parking this year: Linda Claycamp, Aileen Devlin Lundeen, Sarah Day and Jonny Day, Sara Kay, Tara Marsh, Shelly Anne McConnell, Susan Sorg, Debbie Overby, John Camenzind, Abu, Audra and Patrick Williams!!!

It seems like a lot of help (and it was amazing to have it), but we were still 24 people short. The shifts are super short... so no one has to work very hard or long, but when I am covering for 2-3 people, for several shifts at a time, it is exhausting... especially after a stroke.

Please, please....I still need just a couple people Sunday from 1-4:30pm (parking) and 4:30-5:30pm-ish (tear down).

For parking: You will point out where people can park, hand them a flyer and take money. All proceeds go to The Cat's Meow.

For tear down: we will take caution tape down, pull stakes, take down a canopy and "Porta potty" and remove signs.

Please text me if you can help 360.623.0820

Please help! Parking lot volunteers needed during Fair.

I have no one signed up for Wednesday or Thursday... and only a few spots filled on Friday and Saturday.

(I had a stroke a couple months ago, and, unlike previous years, I am not doing so well alone at the lot.)

The Cat's Meow has done so much for the community over the last 14 years. Can some of you help... for just a few hours... this week?

Volunteers will guide cars to spots, take money and hand out flyers. We have a canopy for shade, a table, a cooler with water bottles, a couple chairs and a camp-style toilet in a tent like shelter. Proceeds benefit The Cat's Meow.

The Cat's Meow needs 5-6 volunteers this coming Sunday to do a deep clean of our surgical area. It should only take an hour or so. The area to clean is air conditioned, but I would still like to start early... say around 9am.

This is something we need to do weekly, so please let us know if you're interested in helping on a regular basis.

Feral Colonies & Coyotes

Coyotes are a natural part of our environment and they perform a vital role in the health of ecosystems. But conflicts with pets and livestock, whether real or imagined, have made them an unpopular neighbor for many. As we enter the late winter coyote breeding season, it is time to think about strategies for keeping your colonies as safe as possible.

Whatever your feelings about coyotes, they are here to stay. And so are feral cats. Some shelters and communities actively discourage the feeding of feral cats because of the risk of drawing coyotes into a neighborhood. We believe this advice is inhumane and also misguided. So for part 1, we want to share some tips in protecting your feral colonies and minimizing attractants that may draw coyotes into your area.

Coyotes - Don't Attract Them

The best way to protect cats from predation is to avoid attracting the coyotes to begin with.

-When possible, feed on a schedule and remove all food and food containers after the meal.

-Avoid feeding birds, squirrels and other wildlife in the same area as the feeding station. Coyotes may be attracted to the leftover food and to the animals coming to eat it.

-Pick up fallen fruit and other edible yard waste or compost. Coyotes love fruit.

-Coyotes are attracted to animal waste. Keep the area clean and remove the waste of pets or livestock in the area.

Provide Escape Routes

Areas around homes, may have low-clearance sheds, barns or decks for cats to dash under, but you can add escape routes to improve their chances.

-Place 12 inch X 6 foot PVC pipes around the feeding area and where they hang out. These should be held in place with garden stakes or cement blocks. Teach the cats to investigate them by tossing some treats inside.

-Build a platform that is at least 7 feet tall. If you lack the space or skill to do this, screw a 4 X 4 pole on a pier block so they can climb up to get away. They pole should be a minimum of 7 to 8 feet. Placing it near a shed or building will allow them to get on top to escape.

-Keep shelters away from the feeding area. Feral shelters should have a back door so they can escape predators or aggressive cats.

-Take advantage of any fences or structures in the area.

-Look around and think before deciding where to put the food.
