It’s great fun to celebrate the holidays with our pets, but make sure you keep track of what they’re eating! Keep your pets safe with these five tips:

-Alcohol poisoning can cause serious complications, so keep wine glasses and beer bottles away from sneaky paws.
-Try to keep cats from climbing Christmas trees, as kitties could knock the trees over and seriously hurt themselves in the process.
-Almost all traditional winter plants, like holly, poinsettias, and mistletoe, can cause severe organ damage if pets ingest them. These plants may look pretty, but think twice before bringing them into your home this season.
-Shiny, sparkly wrapping paper, and ribbon look like fun toys, but pets can accidentally ingest them while playing. Clean up as soon as gifts are opened.
-Many holiday treats are full of fruits, like raisins and grapes, and sweets, like chocolate and xylitol, that are toxic to our pets. Keep that plate of treats in the kitchen and away from pets.

Librela: A New Frontier in Managing Canine Osteoarthritis Pain

Have you heard about Librela? This monoclonal antibody injection for treating osteoarthritis pain in dogs is a game changer. Just one injection a month can free dogs from OA pain. Unlike many NSAIDs, Librela is metabolized with minimal involvement of the kidneys or liver—which makes it a great choice for dogs who are not good candidates for NSAIDs due to reduced organ function.

Want to find out more about how Librela can put some pep in your dog’s step? Call us at 360-266-8090 to schedule a consultation.

Older animals have a tough time finding new homes once they end up in shelters. But they make excellent pets, too! When you adopt an older pet, you know what to expect, as they will have grown into their personality already. While many older pets have already been trained, it’s also easier to train them than it is to train kittens or puppies. This month is ASPCA’s Adopt a Senior Pet Month, so we’re helping spread the word that senior pets make excellent companions.

Gobble Up These Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips

-Careful with turkey & trimmings! Bits of lean meat are fine, but fatty skin, gravy, and drippings can cause pancreatitis.
-Bones are a choking hazard, as is the twine you used to secure your bird.
-Stuffing have onion, garlic, nutmeg, raisins, nuts, or mushrooms? It’s a no-no for fido—and felines, too.
-Make sure centerpieces & potpourri with ribbons, flowers and sticks are out of paw’s reach.
-Beer, wine & other alcohol is dangerous for pets—keep glasses and cans above snout level.
-Consider putting your pet in another room with toys and bedding while guests are in the house or at least giving them a “safe place” where they can decompress.
Have a wonderful (and pet-safe) Thanksgiving!

November Is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month!

Diabetes in pets is more common than you might think: it’s estimated that approximately 1 in 300 adult dogs and 1 in 230 cats in the U.S. will develop the disease. While diabetes can occur at any age, it’s of particular concern for senior pets—those over 7. Symptoms of diabetes can include:

Lethargy
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Increased hunger
Weight loss
Weakness
Cloudy eyes, especially in dogs
Poor skin condition
Females are twice as likely as males to become diabetic, and there are some dog breeds that are at higher risk as well—they include Samoyeds, miniature schnauzers, miniature poodles, and pugs.

While there’s no known cure for diabetes, your pet can lead a happy, healthy life with insulin injections, diet modification and careful blood monitoring. However, this disease remains a serious, life-threatening condition.

That’s why it’s so important to have a blood test to screen your pet for diabetes when you bring him or her in for an exam. If your pet is experiencing any of the above symptoms or you have further questions about this condition, please call us at 360-266-8090.
