Parasites are the Pits!

Fleas, ticks, roundworms, heartworms, tapeworms, and giardia are parasites that are not only icky but can also be dangerous to your pet and your household. Many of these parasites and the diseases they carry are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted to humans.

While we always recommend year-round parasite protection for pets, it’s essential in the warmer months when these pests are more active, and we’re all spending more time outdoors. Need some incentive to invest in parasite prevention? How about this:

● A flea can lay up to 1500 eggs in its lifetime, and one flea can become 1000 on your pet and in your home in just 21 days.

● Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes and has been diagnosed in all 50 states. The average mature heartworm in a dog is 10 inches, and treatment is expensive and difficult for your pet.

● At least 70 people in the U.S. (most of them children) are blinded by toxocariasis, which is transmitted to humans through dog and cat f***s infected with roundworm.

● A female hookworm produces 20,000 eggs per DAY, and they are the only worms known to have teeth. It’s estimated that 1/6th of the world’s human population is infected with hookworm.

● Ticks prefer attaching to warm, moist areas, like behind the ears and armpits. Their saliva can transmit multiple illnesses to pets and humans with a single bite.

● Giardia is found widely in the environment in contaminated f***s, water, or soil and causes GI issues in pets and humans. While there is no preventative for giardia, keeping your pet on a leash and not allowing them to drink from puddles or streams is an excellent way to reduce the risk.

Parasite prevention is always much more effective and less expensive than treatment, and we’re happy to help you choose the right preventive medication for your pet and your budget.

For more information on keeping your pet parasite-free or to schedule an appointment, call us at (360) 266-8090 today!

Summer means getting outdoors, getting on the road, and getting your barbecue on—but it can also be hazardous for your pet. Here are some tips to ensure you and your furry friend have the best summer ever!

● Heat kills! Never leave your pet in a car, even for a quick trip! On a sunny 70-degree day, your car can heat up to over 100 degrees in minutes. Hot asphalt will scorch your pet’s paws—so if it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pup.

● Don’t let your dog drink seawater, lake water, or river water. Water from the ocean can cause vomiting and dehydration, while lake and river water are often full of bacteria that can cause illness. If there’s a bloom of blue-green algae, your pet could be at risk of liver failure, nervous system damage, or death if exposed.

● When hiking, keep your pet leashed and on the trails.

● Even if your pet is on a tick preventative, it’s wise to check for these nasty critters after being outdoors. They can jump from pets to people and carry illnesses like Lyme disease.

● Cookouts are tasty, but cooked meat bones often splinter and become hazardous if swallowed. Nix the corn cobs, too—they can cause intestinal blockage.

● If you’re taking your pet on the road or in the air, health and travel certificates from an accredited veterinarian may be required. Our veterinarians can issue those and ensure your pet is healthy enough to travel.

● If you’re off on a vacation without the fur kids, make your boarding reservations now, as spots fill fast during the summer months. You’ll also want to ensure your pet is current on all required vaccinations for boarding.

● Fireworks are fun for us, but the racket is terrifying for many pets. Keep them inside, with calm music or white noise on. If you think your pet may need medication to deal with the noise on July 4th, make an appointment with your Jackson Hwy veterinarian ASAP by calling (360) 266-8090.

Many people struggle with allergies this time of year—but it’s not just people who suffer. Grass, dust, pollen, and other environmental allergens also affect many pets. The most common allergy symptom in pets is excessive itchiness, but symptoms of allergies in pets can also be like our own: coughing, sneezing, and watery, itchy eyes.

If your pet has environmental allergies, your Jackson Hwy veterinarian may suggest allergy medication or testing. Frequent baths can remove allergens from your pet’s coat, and wiping their feet before entering the house can keep them from tracking allergens indoors. You should also vacuum and dust your home regularly to keep it allergen-free, and a HEPA filter can help any household member dealing with allergies.

If you suspect your pet suffers from seasonal allergies, make an appointment online or call us at (360) 266-8090.

Leptospirosis: The Backyard Threat!
There are very few diseases you can get directly from your pet, but one of them is especially easy to contract: leptospirosis, a highly contagious illness spread through the urine of infected wildlife.

Dogs don’t even need to make contact with wildlife to get the disease—simply drinking water or ingesting dirt that’s contaminated with the urine of common backyard animals like squirrels, raccoons, and foxes is enough to make your dog very sick.

It’s important to know that this disease is also zoonotic, which means if your dog catches it, the human members of your family could as well!

Symptoms for both dogs and humans are similar and can include:

-Fever
-Shivering
-Muscle tenderness
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Dehydration
-Lethargy
-Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
-Abdominal pain
We want your pet and your family to be protected! To schedule an appointment with us call us at (360) 266-8090 for more information.

May is National Pet Month!

While you may feel like every month is pet month at your house, this special designation was created specifically to promote the benefits of responsible pet ownership, support pet adoption and shine a light on the work of service animals. Some great ways to celebrate include:

-Adopt a pet – We have many great local shelters and rescues with loving cats and dogs needing homes, and you can also check Petfinder and see who is available for adoption near you.

-Support your local shelter – If you can’t adopt, consider donating money, food, or supplies, which are always desperately needed by these organizations. You might also want to volunteer your time if you’re able.

-Look into volunteering with a service dog organization –

-Make sure your pet is up to date on preventive care – Vaccinations, parasite protection, and a wellness exam are great ways to ensure your pet stays healthy and that we catch any problems early. Let us know if we can help with that—just give us a call at (360) 266-8090!

Supporting Our Team This Mental Health Awareness Month

This May, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month, we at Jackson Hwy Veterinary Clinic are taking a significant step to support our incredible team. We know how much you love your pets, and we're committed to ensuring that the people caring for them are well-supported. To give our staff the rest they need, we will be closing on Saturdays throughout the month of May. Veterinary medicine is rewarding but also presents unique challenges that can affect mental health, including the emotional toll of pet loss, high levels of student debt, and cyberbullying from pet owners.
Disturbingly, female veterinarians are 2.4 times more likely to commit su***de than the general population, and male vets 1.6 times more likely. We are dedicated to changing these statistics by fostering a healthier workplace and ensuring veterinary care remains a sustainable and fulfilling career. We appreciate your understanding and support as we prioritize the well-being of our team. Remember, if you or someone you know is struggling- help is available 24/7 through the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
Thank you for being part of our pet-loving community.

April 29th is World Veterinary Day!

World Veterinary Day was started to promote the variety of work veterinarians do for our pets every single day. But it’s not just our pets that veterinarians help to keep safe—the docs are instrumental to the health of our larger community in various ways. Today, thank a veterinarian for working toward keeping us safe, humans and pets alike!
We would love to thank Dr. Amanda, Dr. Giffey, Dr. Miller, and Dr. Pham for all they do for JHVC!

ATTENTION- PLEASE READ
Hello, my name is Levi! I am a Certified Emotional Support and Medical Alert Dog for my mom. You may see me behind the front counter as I am very observant and like to know what’s going on, but spend most of my time in the office. As I have a very important job to do, please do not:

-Interact with me
-Distract me
-Try to pet me

If you would like to say hello, please ask my mom (Megan) or one of the other receptionists. I am a very friendly boy and love to say hello when allowed!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month!

Heartworm disease is very serious for pets, as it can result in heart failure, lung disease, and even death. Heartworms are spread through mosquito bites, which results in worms producing offspring inside your pet. These worms live in an infected animal's heart, lungs, and blood vessels. While some pet owners think heartworm is not a concern in Washington State, this is a misconception—cases are on the rise in our area, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Call us today at (360) 266-8090 to find the best heartworm preventive for your pet and your budget!
