Cats that spend their entire time indoors don’t get the same level of stimulation as cats that spend some of their time in the great outdoors. This can result in boredom which might lead to weight gain or destructive behavior. Here are some ways you can add stimulation to your cats’ life:
• Provide lots of toy options. Soft mice, squeaky toys, balls and wand toys give variety to your kitty’s playtime.
• Rotate the toys by ‘hiding’ some in the cupboard every few weeks and bringing them out at a later date. This makes the toy seem new and exciting.
• Set aside playtime with your kitty. Wand toys and laser pointers are games you can play with your kitty and provide bonding time for the two of you. Just make sure you never shine the laser pointer in your kitty’s eyes.
• Provide a perch that allows your kitty to see out the window. Some window ledges are wide enough on their own, otherwise a kitty window seat or a scratching post with seating at window level can provide your kitty with an entertaining view.
• Turn on the tv. Many cats don’t respond to the tv but if yours does, try turning on a nature channel or cat tv channel. Some of the Kitty Kat Haven residents enjoy bird tv, and happily sit in the kitty towers listening to and watching the birds flit across the screen. Just make sure your tv is out of reach of any inquisitive paws.
Si appears to be trying to remember where he put his favorite toy.
