Stargazer Siberians

Stargazer Siberians The Stargazers are a group of rescued Siberian Huskies that live a happy life, running in harness, laying on the couch, and generally having good times.
(7)

Stargazer Siberian Sanctuary provides a permanent home for Siberian Huskies that are not adoptable for a variety of reasons; medical, behavioral, age. Many came from a shelter, some were owner turn ins, some were returned multiple times from an adopter. They have shelter here, food, medical care, play, and most of all endless love. We provide educational opportunities for groups, participate in community activities and promote understanding of Northern Breeds and of dog care in general.

We are excited to be bringing back the PSSHC Rescue Parade this year. The parade will be on Saturday, June 1st 2024 at Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds 32 Elma-McCleary Road, Elma WA. In the past this has been a sponsored event to cover the cost of the rescues rosette. If you would like to pledge a rescue for $15.00 or enter your rescue in the parade, contact Susan Scofield. Pledges will not be collected until after May 15th, so we will have a count on entries and support needed. Rescue will receive a rainbow rosette, powder coated pail, and a bandana.

I made the appt for the amputation surgery of Sashi's left foreleg. A soft tissue sarcoma appeared 3 years ago on her wrist which has been debrided three times. Time to remove the leg. At 11, she is still athletic, and I am hoping for a good outcome. With all my special needs Stargazers over the years, I have never had a tripawed. This type of cancer is generally localized. We will check lung rads before surgery, and hopefully no metastasis. The unusual thing is that 13 year old Yuki has the same type of cancer on the inside of her right elbow. A weird coincidence.

Mountain View Veterinary Hospital

Hi Susan,

Due to the recent news reports about this illness, many of our clients have been asking us questions about it. Please note that so far we have not seen any cases related to this illness in our hospital or in Thurston County. It is not uncommon for dogs to contract a respiratory virus this time of year and they usually recover well without any lasting results, but we do want you to be made aware of the of the following information.

Should you be concerned about respiratory illness in your dog? A mystery canine respiratory illness has been spreading across the nation with occurrences reported in Oregon, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada, and portions of the Northeast. The symptoms mimic those of kennel cough or canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), as respiratory signs including coughing, sneezing, eye and nose discharge, lethargy, decreased appetite, and fever may be evident.

While the exact mode of disease transmission remains unknown, since respiratory signs predominate and cases have been shown to spread quickly among dogs in a communal environment, direct and indirect contact (via spread of respiratory droplets in the air and on shared surfaces) are the presumed main drivers of transmission.

Unlike the more common infections associated with kennel cough and CIRDC, these cases don’t respond to standard medical therapy, and can have a prolonged illness that can progress to pneumonia. If your dog has signs of pneumonia, radiographs of the chest and bloodwork will likely be needed. If pneumonia is confirmed, antimicrobials are indicated.

What should dog owners do?

Consider getting diagnostics done early. Because we don’t yet know the cause of the disease, it might be a good idea to get diagnostic testing done when the symptoms first arise, before starting therapy. That’s because once treatment begins and the immune response kicks in, diagnostic tests (e.g., PCR, airway culture, viral isolation) may not be able to detect the virus or bacterium that caused the symptoms.

Most dogs that get CIRDC recover uneventfully. However, severe disease can occur, so we don’t want to be too dismissive.

My dog is sick. What should I do now?

Consult your veterinarian the following signs are present, a prompt visit to the veterinary clinic is indicated:

Weakness, severe depression (meaning the dog is really quiet, not engaged and just lies around, doesn’t get up when you’d expect it too (like for food))
Loss of appetite
Difficulty breathing (breathing faster and harder even when not exercising)
Rapid worsening of illness
Cough that is causing significant problems such as vomiting or making it hard for the dog to breathe
It’s especially important to see the veterinarian if these signs occur in a high-risk dog, including:

Elderly
Very young
Pregnant
Immunocompromised (by disease or treatment)
Underlying heart or respiratory tract disease
Brachycephalic (i.e. squishy faced) breeds

My dog is healthy. What should I do?

Keep your dog healthy by limiting its contact with other dogs, especially large numbers of different dogs with unknown health status. Avoid dog parks. Dogs should be kept away from any obviously sick dogs.

What about vaccines for my dog?

Vaccines are available for some of the causes of CIRDC. For any dogs that have frequent contact with other dogs, vaccination against Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus is important. Critically, it is important to use a vaccine that covers both Bordetella and parainfluenza. Canine influenza (flu) vaccination can be considered as well.

Thanks,

Godspeed Shelley of Stargazer. January 2010- October 2023 Love my Stargazers so much. Shelley was a Craigslist dog . Free! 6 years old, owners building a new home, no room for Shelley. Karin Overbeck sponsored her as a foster. Finally, after two years, she became an official Stargazer. Stubborn and independent, she lived her own life, struggling the past few years with torn ACLs. My bobcat Siberian with no tail, due to a cancerous growth. Brown dog with skin issues, helped by prescription baths and special diet.Determined to get up and go until she could not, yesterday afternoon when I got home from work. No more struggling dear girl. Running and playing like the puppy I never knew on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Bye bye, my little friend.💔😪💖
