Dear friend of Chelsea cats and dogs, [español a continuación]

HubCats Chelsea will be shutting down operations at the end of 2022. I’m proud to say that in our 6 years of joint effort on behalf of homeless cats and pets, we have touched the lives of almost 5,000 dogs and cats! In partnership with the MSPCA and Veterinary Pet Centers, we are proud to have assisted 3,500 owned pets and homeless cats to be spayed or neutered.

Through the long, difficult months of the pandemic, we switched to providing cat food to Chelsea food banks. Our program for homeless cats has rescued 1,500 including sick and injured cats, and many have been restored to health, safety and new homes, thanks to our trappers, rescuers and adoption partners.

As I’m sure you recognize, there is still a need for these services. It’s our hope that a newly energized, Chelsea or multi-town cat-focused group will respond to Chelsea’s clamor for services! Since cats don’t write letters or call, you’ll need to be their voice!

Our dedicated local rescuers, Carole, Sufra and Gary, will continue to help stray and feral cats, but they will need administrative and fundraising support. They will need your support now, more than ever.

I’m glad to say that MSPCA will continue to offer low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to Chelsea dogs and cats, as they do in neighboring towns. (Appointments fill quickly so apply soon to reserve your place!) Donations can still be sent to HubCats Chelsea and will allow them to focus on helping cats. We will post area resources on our page and website.

Much gratitude to Stacy (and staff), Rachel, Pepper and Laura G, and to all of you, our supporters and followers, for the goodness of your hearts, for cats.

Dear Chelsea community,

As of this month, HubCats will no longer be soliciting applications for co-sponsored free spay & neuter services with the MSPCA. But the good news is that Chelsea residents can now apply directly to the MSPCA for spay or neuter for their cats for just $25 for qualified residents.

MSPCA-Angell Clinic Boston offers low-cost spay-neuter services for cats and dogs who live in the greater Boston area. Qualified Dorchester, Roxbury, Hyde Park, Mattapan, East Boston, Lynn, Chelsea, and Brockton residents pay $25 cat spay-neuter. Proof of public assistance is required (SNAP, SSI, rental and housing assistance, fuel assistance, VA assistance, TAFDC, EAEDC or WIC). Please note that state medical insurance or unemployment alone does not qualify you for the subsidized package pricing. If you are not on public assistance, please explain your financial need. Appointments are scheduled Monday – Friday. The surgery package includes the spay-neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, distemper vaccination, nail trim and microchip. See https://www.mspca.org/programs-resources/spay-neuter-services/shalit-glazer-clinic-in-boston/ or apply here: https://www.cognitoforms.com/MSPCABostonAdoptionCenter/lowcostspayneuter SPANISH application: https://www.cognitoforms.com/MSPCABostonAdoptionCenter/Castraci%C3%B3nEsterilizact%C3%B3nABajoCosto Questions? HubCats (& Foster, Pearl, Matcha, Minnewawa, Bumpa, & Lucky) wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving! Remember to take care with holiday foods when curious pets like these are around--keep trash covered, and no pie or sweets for the kitties or pups! Avoid emergencies--give them pet-appropriate treats or toys to keep them occupied and safe. Watch the doors as guests come and go--prevent "escapes." A little extra care means everyone will enjoy the holiday! https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/petcare/thanksgiving-pet-safety

08/22/2022

Are you moving in September? Can’t take your cat or dog? There is no need to leave her behind or abandon him in such a heinous and cruel way. Or if you find yourself unable to take care of your pet, if your pet has behavior issues you can’t manage, or if you can’t afford to feed him, do NOT abandon your pet or turn him outside to fend for himself. Abandonment is cruelty.

Animal cruelty is AGAINST THE LAW in Massachusetts. Yet HubCats Chelsea volunteers sometimes find cruelly abandoned animals, such as a cat taped shut inside a box and left outside not long ago. Aside from being illegal, cruel treatment of pets causes unnecessary suffering.

Here’s what you can do instead:

• Do NOT abandon your cat or dog by leaving him in a strange place or leaving her behind when you move. If you must surrender your pet, CALL the MSPCA or ARL:

Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) Angell Headquarters, Jamaica Plain, 617-522-7400—Read this first: https://www.mspca.org/programs-resources/surrender-an-animal/

Animal Rescue League (ARL), Boston, 617-426-9170, follow the prompts for Boston Admissions; or email [email protected]. https://www.arlboston.org/services/surrender/

• If behavior issues are the problem, before thinking about surrendering your animal, consult these sources:

Free Pet Behavior Helpline, ARL 617-226-5666 or email [email protected] https://www.arlboston.org/services/pet-behavior-helpline/

Dr Rachel Geller, Pet Behaviorist, see her videos on common cat behavior issues on her website https://drrachelcatbehavior.com/ or email her: [email protected]

• Do you need help with PET FOOD? Free cat and dog food is available here for you free of charge at these food pantries in Chelsea:

• St Luke's, 201 Washington Ave, hours 8:30-11:30am Saturdays only
• Salvation Army, 258 Chestnut St., hours 9am-12pm, Mon-Wed

UPDATE: First, THANK YOU to all who have donated to help this sweet but scared injured stray! We are happy to report that he has had treatment for a very deep wound on his front leg and is now recuperating with a foster care-giver. Luckily, the leg did not have to be amputated as we had feared. After further treatment for other conditions, he will be able to go to one of our partner shelters for adoption. But because he only likes the ladies and is terrified of men, he will be happier in an all-girl family where he is the only boy. Again, THANK YOU to all of you who made his treatment and recovery possible! He would not have survived without you!

Can you help? Yesterday, a concerned Chelsea resident named Kimberly alerted us to an injured adult stray cat in her yard. Luckily our volunteers were able to go to the site and trap the cat, whose front paw is badly injured. He ran away at first because he was scared, and he ran on three legs. He is terrified of men but is fine around the ladies. If you can help with a few bucks towards this kitty's vet care, we would really appreciate it. THANK YOU!😻😽

These are just two of the 24 kittens rescued in Chelsea last week by a HubCats volunteer. 😻 Our volunteer worked tirelessly to trap them and bring them to safety. Most will go to our partner shelters after vet visits and should be available for adoption. Can you contribute to their care? If you can, we would appreciate it. No one at HubCats receives any salary--all donations go to cat care (veterinary care and food). We are very grateful for the support of the community. THANK YOU. 😽
