PT comes in all forms here at Barn. For Dwight, our animal care staff aims to do about 30 minutes of massage with a massage gun. They target 3 different sets of muscles (the same on each side of the body). In addition to the massage gun, they do an exercise called wither rocking from each side. He also uses a surefoot pad on each of his rear legs. The exercises were recommended to us by to try to help with his mobility and use of his RR leg which he has had great success with since being here at Barn.

Barn Sanctuary’s vans have been at the center of many memorable moments. From taking young Mike across the country to California in 2018 for eye surgery (where he also got to visit Malibu beach), to bringing beloved residents like Emmy and Hugo home to start their new lives at Barn, these vans have made countless trips possible. They aren’t just transportation - they make our rescue work and dedicated care possible.

Our vans provide safe, comfortable transport for our residents to their many vet visits, physical therapy appointments, and surgeries, both near and far. With temperature-controlled interiors, they protect our vulnerable residents from Michigan’s freezing winters and sweltering summers. During emergencies, these vans become more critical than ever, allowing us to rush residents to urgent medical care when minutes matter most.

After miles and miles on rural roads and highways, our vans are facing more frequent mechanical issues. We always have to have reliable transportation for our residents and we can’t risk having a breakdown during a medical emergency, so these repairs are necessary, but they are costly.

Our tractors are essential to keeping our sanctuary running day after day. These machines handle critical tasks such as pulling our manure spreader, transporting heavy materials, maintaining pastures, cleaning barnyards, grading roads, and much more. By efficiently and properly helping our team complete tasks like these, we can ensure our residents have the space and resources they need to thrive every single day.

Every day, these tractors help us manage the waste of 140+ residents - a crucial health measure that helps prevent the spread of disease and creates comfortable living environments. Our tractors operate 365 days a year, through Michigan’s harshest snow and sweltering heat waves. Our truck and our trailers are the backbone of our most challenging operations. When one of our larger residents needs medical attention, when we need to transport hundreds of bales of hay, or when we need to rush to rescue animals in need - these powerful vehicles make it possible. Just recently, our truck and one of our trailers brought our beloved Jared safely to Michigan State University and back for a critical surgery to remove a cancerous mass. Moments like these remind us how essential our transportation fleet is to the wellbeing of all our residents.

Each rescue mission, vet visit, and feed delivery puts strain on critical components. Regular maintenance and repairs isn’t just about keeping our wheels turning – it’s about ensuring we can always provide exceptional care to our residents and to animals in need.

Our UTVs (utility task vehicle) may be smaller than our other vehicles, but they are mighty in what they allow us to do for our residents. From sunrise to sunset, our animal care and facilities staff rely on our fleet of UTVs to deliver food and water to all our residents, distribute essential bedding materials, and efficiently navigate our property - allowing us to maximize the time we dedicate to our residents. In times of emergency, these vehicles also allow us to quickly reach a resident in need. We can use a UTV to bring vital supplies and medical equipment if needed, potentially saving a life.❤️

Just some pigs being perfect! 🐷

Not only are pigs incredibly smart, but their intelligence extends to their emotional understanding as well - they are incredibly empathetic beings. They cooperate with and learn from one another in a variety of contexts.

This profound emotional intelligence leads pigs to create strong bonds with one another, and they are known to prefer the company of other pigs, or familiar faces. In spite of their poor eyesight, pigs are able to recognize the faces of their friends and family (both nonhuman and human alike) and prefer those faces that they recognize.

These hardworking vehicles have been by our side year after year, powering through muddy pastures in the Spring and icy roads in the Winter. But recently, our fleet of vehicles has been facing numerous mechanical issues. These costs have quickly added up, creating a significant financial burden for us. Jared is back home!❤️ After spending a few days at Michigan State University for a surgery on his right front leg, Jared came back home today where he’ll continue to heal.
