FriYEY! 🐔
Colum loves his little friend. You can help the other chickens by giving them a plush friend. Our roosters especially like these. We are challenging YOU, our amazing followers, to help see how many we can get! Check out our Amazon wishlist to share some love!

Did you know: Chickens love companionship because they are naturally social animals, meaning they thrive in groups and feel safer and more secure when surrounded by their flock.

Happy Birthday to Jim and Jill! 🎉
Jill and Jim are a rare breed of sheep that originated in Scotland, called Soay sheep. They were born on a Michigan farm in the harsh Winter of 2018, and Barn Sanctuary received a call to rescue them when they were five months old. We were told Jill and Jim were born with leg deformities and the pair would need special care to survive and live long healthy lives. They have received that year after year here at Barn and continue to thrive here. We have loved having them here for over 6+ years. Here's to another many more years of health and happiness at Barn! ❤

As 2024 comes to a close, we can’t help but reflect on the incredible strides we’ve made together this year. Thanks to YOU, the Barn Sanctuary family, we’ve achieved so much—and we’re deeply grateful for your unwavering support! Each animal who finds Barn Sanctuary as their new home is given the chance to heal, thrive, and experience love for the first time.

Some of the highlights from this year include:
- Emmy’s health scare which she battled through at MSU and recovered with Hugo happily by her side.
- Missy’s rescue and finally after months she is living happily with other pigs (Jasper and Tyler).
- Rosebud’s journey with her hoof. From having it get infected, to different prosthetics, to having a large chunk cut off, to now having a brand new prosthetic that she gets around great with.
- Receiving a large amount of donations that allowed us to double the size of the Potbellied Pig pasture.
- Dwight’s trip to Arkansas where he spent 6 weeks at rehab to continue his work with his leg.

We also launched a new volunteer program, hosted tours, and participated in numerous VegFests and Farmers Markets in the community to spread the message about Barn Sanctuary and the importance of compassion. None of this would have been possible without your support. Thank you for helping us make these moments possible! With your continued love and support, we’ll rescue even more animals, expand our outreach, and create even more happy endings. 2024 just can’t help itself for sadness, I’m afraid. Our office is again a bit quieter. 😞 On Friday our bird vet informed Casey, one of our animal caregivers, that Monroe had a severe infection (still and/or again), and that even if it did ever heal, there’s not enough tissue left to close the gaping leg hole. He had pieces of bone falling off, which she believed meant he was close to going septic. He also lost weight, and while it was a heartbreaking discussion amongst us, it was deemed the right thing to do for Monroe was to peacefully let him go.

This boy has been a challenge since he appeared a few years ago. A belly full of hardware (that ended up magically disappearing, not requiring risky surgery), a high level of spice for humans (so many scars on us!), but a gentle, reserved nature for hens (and being terrified of other roosters half his size) always made Monroe an interesting fellow. Many many months of daily wraps, wound care, meds and light therapy just wasn’t enough, and as we know all too well, that’s the game we play when attempting to give the unwanted and abandoned a shot at a proper life.

Thank you, Monroe, for teaching us so many lessons in patience and appreciation for the good in everyone. We’re sorry we couldn’t have given you a longer life, but we hope we did right by you in the time we had. 💔

with love from Rosebud 🐮

In the summer of 2023, we came across a cow with mobility issues from Minnesota. She was born with a missing front hoof, but got around with a prosthetic. Her foster family did everything they could, but they didn’t have access to proper large animal vet care. They made the difficult decision to find her forever home so she could live her best life.

Rosie is as sweet as can be. She loves being around people, getting brushed, and giving kisses. Her personality has blossomed even more since getting settled in on her new life here.

With her mobility issues, she was the perfect companion for Mabel, another resident cow who has a disability that prevents her from being with the rest of the herd. We integrated the two and they have developed a sweet and lasting friendship!

Percy has been facing some challenges with an ongoing leg infection, and we’re doing everything we can to help him heal. The infection in his leg, particularly around the hock, is still causing some concern. His leg deformities most likely caused this issue.

Percy is receiving medication to help fight the infection, which is largely caused by E. coli. He is receiving regular treatments for wound care and bandaging his legs to protect his hocks, which are vulnerable due to his leg deformities. While there’s been some progress, his leg continues to look concerning, with chunks of pus and tissue coming off during dressing changes.

We’re committed to doing everything we can for Percy, but the ongoing medical care and treatments are costly. If you’re able to help with a donation, it would mean the world to us and to Percy. Every little bit will go directly toward his care, including medications, bandaging, and additional treatments that will give him the best chance at a full recovery. Your kindness and support are truly appreciated during this difficult time.

Thank you for considering helping Percy through his healing journey. Donate below or click this link: https://barnsanctuary.donorsupport.co/-/XHVKUBYJ
