August 18th was the beginning of the worst event many in our community would face. The Gray fire has consumed over 10 thousand acres, destroying everything that many had. In light of this monstrous tragedy, here at Cheney Vet Clinic we continue to count our blessings and extend our hearts. Seeing the community and surrounding communities rally support for these victims is something that continues to leave us speechless. We are honored to be Medical Lake Strong and restoring hope.

With so many people, businesses and organizations stepping forward to help Cheney Vet Clinic would like to encourage everyone who can, continue to donate and show your support. Those who suffered loss, to any degree, due to the Gray Fire have a very long, uphill battle ahead of them as they move forward with clean up and rebuilding. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Victims are still sorting through and processing what all was lost, what they still have, and how to move forward from here. Many people don't know what all is needed yet, as so many things are still very uncertain. Insurance agents will be pushed to their work load capacity, contractors are going to be coming in waves to give estimates and people need time to navigate everything. What they currently have left may not suffice in the months, or years to come while they rebuild. At absolutely no fault of their own, winter necessities are likely not even on their minds yet. This is where we, as a community can really rally the support!! We are encouraging people to continue to donate anything you think may be helpful. The first wave of need may have been, or close to being met however, we anticipate multiple more waves of need to be seen. We are also seeing another wave of need for care for pets as they are being reunited.

How to donate? Cheney veterinary clinic and its staff will continue to accept donations. Donations that are not needed in this moment will be stored for future need. We are also now excepting monetary donations. Clients of ours can round up their bill to the nearest dollar amount when they check out after their appointment. Community members and clients can drop money in our donation bucket located at the front desk or make cash/check/debit/credit card donations in person. We are also able to take donations via card over the phone.

We sincerely appreciate everyone who’s already donated and want to extend a giant thank you to the community for rallying together for the Gray Fire victims. Thank you to all the firefighters and first responders as well. Without their hard work, those of us counting our blessings might not be able to.

Hello everyone! 🐾🐶

We wanted to give everyone an update on the importance of vaccines. We have seen 3 parvovirus cases in the past two weeks. Parvovirus can be deadly if left untreated. Vaccinating your new puppy is the easiest way to avoid them contracting the virus.

“Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk. Dogs that are ill from canine parvovirus infection are often said to have "parvo." The virus affects dogs' gastrointestinal tracts and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated f***s (stool), environments, or people. The virus can also contaminate kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. It is resistant to heat, cold, humidity, and drying, and can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Even trace amounts of f***s from an infected dog may harbor the virus and infect other dogs that come into the infected environment. The virus is readily transmitted from place to place on the hair or feet of dogs or via contaminated cages, shoes, or other objects.

Some of the signs of parvovirus include lethargy; loss of appetite; abdominal pain and bloating; fever or low body temperature (hypothermia); vomiting; and severe, often bloody, diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock” (AVMA, 2020).

If your planning on adopting a puppy this winter season, give us a call! We would love to help get your new family member set up on a vaccine schedule. Let prevent parvovirus together! 509-235-6860
