As we approach the holidays, I want to remind everyone that animals aren’t surprise gifts! While most have the best intentions- to gift a loving companion- there can be difficulties when surprising someone with a pet.
A pet is a 10+ year commitment. That means vet care, regular grooming, training (at home and possible professional training), exercise, enrichment, food, toys, and so much more. Not only is having an animal time consuming, but it’s also expensive. Some might not be ready to take on the responsibilities of a pet, and that’s okay! It’s important to take time to plan, save up, and get prepared.
Not every animal fits everyone’s lifestyles, and different breeds have different needs! For example, a high-energy dog needs lots of exercise versus a dog who prefers more couch time. A long-haired dog or cat needs more frequent grooming than a short-haired dog or cat. Certain breeds have health problems that they are prone to get, and that can lead to expensive and time-consuming medical treatment. Reptiles have extensive, very specific needs to live a long and healthy life. Smaller furry friends, fish, and birds also require special care. The amount of money, time, space, and energy can be different for different types of animals and breeds.
Gifting a child an animal can also be bad idea. It’s amazing to see the bond a kid and their pet have, but unfortunately love alone can’t provide a fulfilling life to living animals. While a child can feed, water, and play with a pet, they’re not able to provide the finances and knowledge necessary for vet care, training, grooming, and all the other expenses that come with a pet. A caregiver should be teaching them the responsibilities of owning an animal, and should be involved in the choosing of a pet.
Unfortunately, in circumstances where someone might not be ready for or want a pet, the need to re-home or give them up to a shelter might arise. That can be extremely stressful for both the pet and the owner. A owner making an informed decision to get a pet always gives them the best chance at a long life together.
So, let’s say the animal-loving person in your life got a pet, or is planning to. What gift could you give them?
- Gear (harness, leash, collar)
- Accessories for their pet to wear (bows, bow ties, rain and snow jackets, holiday-themed clothing)
- Treats
- Toys
- Beds
- Tank accessories
- Subscription boxes
- A gift card to your local dog-friendly businesses (grooming, boarding, sitters)
- Framed picture of their pet
- Personalized gifts (ornaments, clothing, keychains, jewelry)
It’s important to remember that taking in a living, breathing animal is a huge decision that requires research, planning, stable finances, and long-term commitment. Please keep this in mind if you’re thinking of gifting an animal, or if you’re thinking about getting an animal yourself. I will always advocate for my furry, scaly, and feathery friends 💚
