We started day 1 with hand feeding, sitting together quietly and calmly, and rewarding any interest in me. At no point did I ever even attempt to pet or physically interact with her.
Eventually during our training sessions I noticed her wanting to get excited, but she was too nervous to let herself go.
After several days, I attempted play. She was nervous at first, but quickly let go and was SO EXCITED to run around and play. She would occasionally stop to reassess the situation to make sure she was still safe, and whenever she did I stopped play until she regained interest. If I had started engaging in this type of play too quickly, she 100% would’ve viewed it as threatening and been too fearful to engage, and it likely would’ve damaged our relationship. Slow and steady is key!
After a little bit longer, she was crawling into my lap and begging for love and attention.
Nervous, fearful, anxious dogs are some of my favorites to work with because the progress may be slow and boring, but the results are so worth the wait. I love this sweet girl 🥰
A little clip of a long lunch with Nutmeg! One of her owners goals was to be able to take her out to dog friendly restaurants and bars, so we did just that! She was a perfect lady holding her down command even as people walked by, food was delivered, and cars drove by outside 🥰
This video had INCREDIBLE timing. Right toward the end of Maggie’s training, we were outside off leash discussing her recall and how to navigate life without the leash in their yard. As a reminder, Maggie came to training for her reactivity toward dogs, people, etc and some anxiety and poor recall as well. Mid-update video, UPS pulled up with a package. How cool! Here is the partially sped up clip (enjoy my mouse voice 🤪) of me recalling Maggie, putting her into a down in my yard with an implied stay, walking away to retrieve my package and thank the driver, walking back, and releasing her. No barking, no jumping, no running away, just relaxed, focused obedience. We offer real world dog training with real world results, even for the anxious, reactive ones 🐶
