Grackle Acre is a small urban(ish) farm with two adult(ish) people doing their best to grow things in Chesapeake, Virginia.

We strive to use responsible agricultural practices that respect the land and wildlife as we grow food and raise livestock.

✅ Fresh nesting material
✅ Open nesting spots
✅ Ignore all of it, lay eggs in the open for the rain, sun, and bugs to get, forget about the nest for a few days.

Pig the duck isn't cut out for this. 😂

This is bananas! 🍌

No really, one of our banana trees ended up flowering this year. Unfortunately these little ones require about 90 days of good weather to be edible, something that just isn't viable in our growing zone.

This morning I was manually pollinating new ears to ensure a full crop. We are attempting to get two, back-to-back plantings of corn out of our garden and so far it's going well.

This lady has been cared for since April, she was transfered from the first corn crop to the shed where she has laid not one, not two, but three egg sacs so far for a total of 1500 possible baby spiders in the spring.

Viceroy Butterfly 🦋

This butterfly evolved to look similar to Monarchs because they both share the a foul taste that keeps predators away. It is quite prolific compared to it's endangered relative.

Happy Corn Moon!

Also called the harvest moon as it rises at sunset and sets at sunrise giving light through the night to continue harvesting. In this image, Jupiter can be seen brightly on the left and Saturn faintly on the right at the edge.

There won't be a corn harvest tonight, this is our second planting of corn to see how much we can push our garden to produce. These should be ready by October. 🤞
