One of the things I truly love about being a housecall veterinarian is that my patients are much more likely to see me as a friend. In fact, some even wait for us out in the yard 💕

Itchy ? Not so fun fact is Virginia Beach is ranked as second on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s list of most challenging cities.

Where we typically suffer from respiratory signs from our allergies, our feline and canine friends typically present with itching. In fact, this condition is often referred to as “The Tidewater Itch” in Hampton roads because it is so very common. Although allergies are more commonly caused by pollen, they can also be caused by food and even fleas. Allergies are more common in dogs but do occur in cats as well.

Typically, our patients present with excessive itching that leads to skin, feet, and ear infections as well as increased “doggy” odor. Food allergies are more likely to manifest in younger patients (under 2 years of age), while pollen allergies are likely to manifest after 2 years of age. Skin infections can present with little red bumps on the skin, crusts forming, hair loss, and increased pigment of the skin. It can be a vicious cycle as itching leads to the infection, but then the infection increases the drive to itch. Ear infections present with typical flapping of the ears and head, red ears, and discharge from the ear. The increased doggy odor is usually from what is called seborrhea which is increased sebum production.

Treatment usually involves clearing the infections present with anitibiotics and bathing your pet in medicated shampoos that target your pet’s specific issues. To address the allergy itself may involve a food trial, allergy medications such as apoquel or cytopoint, or allergy hyposensitization injections or oral serum. Frequent bathing also helps pollen allergic patients as they absorb the pollen through their skin. A food trial usually consists of feeding a prescription food and only that food for a period of up to 12 weeks. Normal allergy testing is not accurate in our veterinary patients for food allergies, unfortunately, only a food trial is effective.

September is National Service Dog Month.

A service dog is much more than just a vest they wear. These canines work hard! They have undergone extensive training not only to provide the help to their human partner, but so they can enter a vast array of environments that would be problematic for the average canine. A service dog often gives their partner new found confidence in their lives. When you see a service dog wearing their vest, it’s wise to be aware they are working and need to be vigilant to their job.

We would like to thank these canines for their dedication and all they do!

Happy National Dog Day! National Dog Day was first created to raise awareness about adopting these animals who are currently in rescue centers. In addition, this day helps to promote dog ownership of all breeds, pure and mixed. We hope that you enjoy celebrating this day with your canine family member. They definitely deserve the celebration.

Thank you to all the animals who have graced our lives. You have always left the world a better place. 💕

April is Heartworm Prevention Month! Heartworms are spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Even if your pet doesn’t spend much time outside they can still be infected. Here are some fun ( or not so fun depending on your point of view) facts about heartworms:

** It can take 4 to 6 months after a dog is infected for them to test positive
**Only the adult worm lives in the dog’s heart. The larval forms are found in the mosquito or in the tissues migrating to the heart.
**Cats can get heartworm disease. Their immune system does fight the heartworm infection differently than in the dog. Clinical signs can be asthma or chronic vomiting. It’s harder to diagnose in cats than in dogs.
**Annual testing helps to catch infections that occur even when pets haven’t missed doses. They can be sneaky and vomit up a dose in secret and unfortunately, nothing out there is 100% effective against anything
** Heartworm disease can cause lifelong damage in your pets lungs, heart and even organs.
**Treatment is lengthy and financially expensive but also can be difficult for your pet.
**Heartworm disease is much better to prevent, or catch early than to treat after clinical signs occur.

It is a sad day for our beloved mobile clinic we affectionately call Bertha. Friday was the first day in nearly six years she did not make home under her own power. She has been towed to her favorite mechanic, Wicked Wrench, and being well attended. We hope to have her back on the road as soon as possible.
