Dear Santa,

My name is Lunar Eclipse, and I’ve been a very good kitty this year! I’ve been practicing my graceful leaps and showing my playful side to everyone who visits me. I even climbed all the way to the top of the cat tree—pretty impressive, right?

This year, my wish is to find a forever family who will love me for the shy but sweet girl I am. I dream of cozy evenings watching the stars through the window, playing with wand toys, and snuggling up in a warm lap when I’m feeling brave.

I promise to bring light and joy to my new family, just like my name suggests. I’m waiting patiently at Pet Supplies Plus in Great Bridge—maybe you can deliver my wish soon?

Love,
Lunar Eclipse

P.S. I wouldn’t mind if you threw in some extra wand toys and catnip for good measure! 🐾🎁

P.P.S. THANK YOU to our friends at Pet Supplies Plus - Chesapeake, VA for their wonderful partnership and hospitality in hosting some of our adoptable feline friends!

Meet Pumpkin, a beautiful orange tabby who’s ready to find her purr-fect home for the holidays. This sweet 4-year-old girl is as warm and comforting as her name suggests. She loves curling up in cozy spots, sunbathing by the window, and spending time with her humans.

Pumpkin has previously lived with both cats and dogs, and while she’s done well, we’ve learned that a calm environment where she feels safe and supported is key to her success. She thrives when she has plenty of litter box options and a little time to settle in—it’s all about setting her up for success!

Our team will work closely with Pumpkin’s adopter to ensure her transition is smooth and that her needs are met. Her adoption includes counseling to help her feel right at home in your heart and your home.

If you’re patient, loving, and looking for a companion who just needs a little extra TLC, Pumpkin is ready to show you how sweet life can be. 🎄🐾

Interested in meeting this adorable lady? Visit us during adoption hours or apply online to bring Pumpkin home for the holidays!

Dear Santa,

It’s me, Excalibur, the 3-year-old hound mix at Chesapeake Humane Society! I’ve been such a good boy this year—well, except for maybe barking a little too excitedly in my kennel (but I’m just trying to say hello!).

Here’s my Christmas wish list:
🎄 A forever home with people who love me
🎾 Lots of outdoor playtime (fetch is my favorite!)
🚗 Car rides to fun adventures
🐶 Maybe a doggy sibling to run around with (I love other dogs!)
💖 A cozy spot for naps after a long day of tail wagging

I promise to be the best boy ever—I’m already smart, eager to please, and full of love to give.

Thanks, Santa. I’ll leave some treats out for your reindeer!

Love,
Excalibur

📬 Excalibur is waiting to meet his forever family at CHS—stop by and make his Christmas wish come true! Open 12-4pm today-Sunday, closed Monday, and open 12-3pm on Christmas Eve

12/16/2024

After 13 years of dedicated service, Lacy Shirey will be stepping down as Executive Director of the Chesapeake Humane Society. A beloved and highly effective leader, Lacy has guided CHS through tremendous growth, including spearheading several capital campaigns - most notably leading to the opening of our Adoption Center on New Mill Drive and expanding our Veterinary Clinic footprint. Lacy also developed the essential Crisis Boarding Program, providing a lifeline for families in crisis to keep their beloved pets safe and together during challenging times.

Under Lacy’s leadership, the Chesapeake Humane Society has not only grown in size and impact but has also cultivated a thriving community of dedicated supporters. From donors and volunteers to partner organizations and advocates, Lacy has worked tirelessly to foster meaningful relationships that have strengthened CHS’s mission. Her ability to connect with people, inspire action, and build trust has created a network of compassionate individuals who believe in the power of the bond between people and pets and are committed to making a difference. This community of strong supporters will remain a cornerstone of CHS’s future success, serving as a testament to Lacy's extraordinary vision and leadership.

This transition also marks an exciting new chapter for CHS, as it opens the door to fresh opportunities to further our mission and vision. Stepping into the role of Interim Executive Director is Emily Peck, our current Development Director.

Emily joined the Chesapeake Humane Society in August, bringing over two decades of experience in animal welfare. Raised in rural Ohio, her passion for animals has been a lifelong driving force. Since relocating to Hampton Roads in 2012, Emily has dedicated her career to nonprofit work, starting in veterinary medicine before transitioning to fundraising. Her deep expertise in animal welfare and philanthropy, coupled with her proven ability to foster meaningful connections, allows her to unite CHS supporters and staff in advancing the organization’s mission. Emily’s dedication and leadership have been recognized with notable accolades, including being named one of Hampton Roads’ Top 40 Under 40 Business Professionals and receiving Otterbein University’s Graduate Of the Last Decade Alumni Award for exceptional volunteer service and community impact. As CHS enters this transitional phase, Emily is committed to supporting its vital programs and furthering our impact.

As Emily takes on this interim role, the CHS board of directors will begin the search for a new Executive Director. We thank Lacy for her incredible contributions and wish her all the best in her next chapter, and we are confident Emily will lead CHS with compassion and excellence during this time of change.

12/13/2024

Willie, a sweet 7-year-old Basset Hound mix, found himself at the Chesapeake Humane Society after being transferred from another shelter. With his soulful eyes, gentle demeanor, and calm nature, it didn’t take long for the staff to fall in love with him. But like many senior dogs, Willie faced challenges. Shortly after his arrival, our veterinary team discovered a small mass on his groin.

Thanks to the incredible support of The Grey Muzzle Organization, we were able to remove the mass and send it for a biopsy. The results confirmed it was a tumor, but thankfully, he has a very good prognosis post-surgery. Willie is now on the path to living many more years filled with love, comfort, and joy.

What makes Willie’s story even more special is the generosity of a kindhearted woman who chose to sponsor his adoption fee as a Christmas gift for her two young nieces, Regan and Riley Higgins. Through her thoughtful gesture, she gave Willie the gift of hope and ensured that his new family wouldn’t face financial barriers to welcoming him into their home.

Willie is now ready to enjoy the good life he so richly deserves—a life full of warm snuggles, gentle companionship, and plenty of love. His journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of The Grey Muzzle Organization, which continues to make a profound difference for senior dogs like Willie.

Thank you for helping us write happy endings like Willie’s. His story is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact of collective generosity. ❤️

Homeless doesn’t mean...forever.

Maggie and Naples are proof that second chances can be life-changing.
Both senior dogs were transferred to Chesapeake Humane Society from our partners at Chesapeake Animal Services with little known about their pasts. Both required medical attention, including mass removals, with Maggie’s care supported by a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization.

Senior pets often wait longer to find homes, but Maggie’s luck turned when she met her perfect match. Her new family returned to our shelter just a month later to adopt Naples, giving him the same loving second chance. Now, these two golden oldies are thriving together, enjoying their golden years in a home filled with love.

This Giving Tuesday, your support helps pets like Maggie and Naples find their forever families. Because at Chesapeake Humane Society, we believe homeless doesn’t mean forever.

Thank you for following along with these inspiring stories and for your generous donations on Giving Tuesday. Through your support, experiencing homelessness is just the beginning of the story, and hope is what makes the difference for so many pets and families.

Homeless doesn’t mean...heartbroken.

When Kierra found herself in an unsafe living situation, her biggest concern wasn’t for herself but for Dumpling, her beloved horse. She couldn’t leave until she knew Dumpling would be safe. Thanks to a referral from Samaritan House and help from our Crisis Boarding Program, we ensured Dumpling was transported to safety with the help of Luna Blu Equestrian & True Blu Equine Rescue .

Though Dumpling was nervous about the horse trailer and experienced separation anxiety, she quickly settled in with lots of love and care. During her 21 days in our program, Dumpling received a Coggins test, vaccines, and dental care.

For Kierra, Dumpling is more than a pet—she’s “her heart.” With Dumpling safe and sound, Kierra found a new barn to board her horse and a secure home for herself. Today, Kierra is thriving: she’s working as a veterinary assistant, training to become a vet tech, and even fostering cats and dogs through our Crisis Boarding Program.

This Giving Tuesday, your support helps make stories like Kierra and Dumpling’s possible. The Crisis Boarding Program keeps pets safe and loved while their families find the strength to rebuild. Because at Chesapeake Humane Society, we believe homeless doesn’t mean heartbroken.

Homeless doesn’t mean...human-less.

In 2022, Nutmeg found a safe haven at Chesapeake Humane Society through our Crisis Boarding Program. Her family faced homelessness but never gave up on their beloved dog. They became regulars at our Pet Pantry, ensuring Nutmeg never went without food or care. In 2023, their family grew when they adopted Etch-a-Sketch from us, giving him the loving home he deserved.

But hard times struck again. At a Street Dog Coalition clinic earlier this year, they discovered Etch-a-Sketch was heartworm positive. With the help of grant funding, Paws In Need, and their own contributions, we made sure Etch-a-Sketch got the lifesaving treatment he needed. Today, he’s heartworm-free and thriving.

Today, this family has embarking on a new chapter in Maine, where they’ll live in a tiny house on five acres—a dream come true. They stopped by our shelter over the summer to say goodbye, grateful for the care and support they received through every step of their journey.

This Giving Tuesday, your donations to programs like our Pet Pantry and Crisis Boarding help families like theirs stay together, no matter what challenges they face. Because every pet deserves love, security, and their humans by their side.

Donate today to make a difference: www.chesapeakehumane.org/holiday

Thank you for believing that “homeless doesn’t mean human-less” and for keeping pets and their people together.

Homeless doesn’t mean...heartless.

Lt. Dan’s journey began with unimaginable trauma. Found with a damaged eye, a partially amputated leg, and healed pelvic fractures, this resilient kitten had already faced so much. But thanks to the expertise and dedication of our low-cost veterinary clinic, his story turned from heartbreak to hope.

In October, Lt. Dan underwent a successful eye enucleation and neuter. Recognizing his ongoing discomfort, our doctors recommended a full amputation of his injured leg to relieve his pain. After radiographs and a careful plan, Lt. Dan’s path to recovery began.

By November, this brave little fighter had found a loving home. But when his remaining stump became sore and infected, his adopter turned to us for help. With the support of our shelter partner, we provided the lifesaving leg amputation that Lt. Dan needed to live pain-free. Today, he’s thriving in his forever home, thanks to the compassion of his new family and the care he received at our clinic.

Your donations make these life-changing services possible. This Giving Tuesday, support our low-cost veterinary clinic so pets like Lt. Dan can receive the care they need to heal, thrive, and find the loving homes they deserve.

Donate today to make a difference: www.chesapeakehumane.org/holiday

Because of you, pets like Lt. Dan can live their best lives, free from pain and full of love. Stay tuned throughout the day for more stories of transformation made possible by your generosity!

Homeless doesn’t mean helpless.

Meet Fendi. This sweet Yorkie came to us as a transfer from Chesapeake Animal Services, unexpectedly pregnant and stressed. After giving birth to her puppies in the shelter, Fendi and her little ones needed extra love and attention. Thanks to our incredible foster families, Fendi moved into a quiet home where she could focus on her puppies, including Prada, who required bottle-feeding and lots of TLC.

Fendi eventually settled in, learning to trust and even becoming best friends with her foster family’s dogs. All her puppies, including Prada, found loving forever homes, and Fendi is now thriving in her new home, too.

Your donation today helps support vital programs like our Foster & Volunteer Network, ensuring pets like Fendi and her pups receive the care, comfort, and love they need to start their new chapters.

Be part of this incredible journey and make a gift this Giving Tuesday: www.chesapeakehumane.org/holiday

Together, we can bring hope and healing to pets in need. Stay tuned for more stories of transformation made possible by YOU.
