We go through a lot of toys this time of year with litters of puppies in foster homes, trying to keep our shelter and crisis boarding dogs happy on super hot days, and the occasional chewer (aka destroyer-of-toys).
If your pup is willing to donate some old toys, adoptable Charlie Ann (pictured here) would definitely appreciate it! We prefer washable stuffed toys and chew bones like Nylabones or Kongs if possible.

Each week the Chesapeake Humane Society takes in cats and kittens from other shelters in our area. Occasionally, we have newborn kittens without their mother. These "bottle babies" require more support in their mother's absence to nurse from a bottle and be stimulated to go to the bathroom. We are able to accept the most fragile of these into our care because of our amazing foster families!
We are always looking for additional foster homes for kittens, puppies, and pets in our Crisis Boarding program. Fostering is very rewarding, and we supply all of the veterinary care and supplies needed to foster! Here's a story about our community partners and how we aim to keep pets and people together. Thanks to a grant from PetSmart Charities, we are able to partner with Mercy Drops Dream Center to distribute pet food and supplies in the Prentis Park area of Portsmouth. At a recent Adopt-A-Block in Dale Homes, we met a community member who was moving into a new place and was faced with having to surrender his pet because he could not afford the $400 pet deposit or the medical care required by the leasing office. We helped by paying the pet deposit thanks to a grant from the Barbara Upton Wilson Charitable Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, and a CHS volunteer transported his cat, Rolls Royce, to our veterinary clinic for neuter and vaccines. The owner is thrilled that he was able to keep his cat and we continue to support him by providing cat food and supplies.
Our friends at Chesbay Distributing LLC held their annual fundraiser for the Chesapeake Humane Society. In addition to raising funds, they donated pet food and supplies! Thank you, Chesbay!

On these hot summer days, we work very hard to keep our dogs engaged with enrichment activities.
Charlie Ann just finished her last injection for heartworm treatment and needs to rest as much as possible. Her buddy Muffin was more than happy to keep her company out of the heat! These pups are our two longest residents, so we were excited to let them enjoy a movie in our conference room while chewing on toys and delicious snacks.
Both Charlie Ann and Muffin are dog and kid-friendly. They love toys and playing fetch and seem to enjoy Bluey on hot days! They have been waiting for their forever homes for a couple of months now, and we can't figure out why. The 4th of July holiday usually results in an increased number of lost pets, making it the third top stray intake day of the year. Lost Pet reports an increase between 30% and 60% around the 4th of July.
As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and festivities, it's important to remember that loud noises can be extremely distressing for our pets. Sadly, many pets get scared and run away during fireworks displays.
Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and calm during this time:
- Keep them indoors: During fireworks displays, ensure your pets are safely indoors in a safe, quiet space where they can feel secure.
- Identification is key: Make sure your pets have up-to-date ID tags and are microchipped. This greatly increases the chances of them being returned to you if they do get lost.
- Stay with your pets: If possible, stay home with your pets during fireworks shows. Your presence can provide comfort and reassurance.
- Create a calming environment: Close windows, draw curtains, and play soothing music or white noise to help drown out the sound of fireworks.
- Consult your vet: If your pet is particularly anxious during fireworks, consult your veterinarian for advice on calming products or medications.

Momma D came in with her five kittens earlier this year. She was a great mom; her babies grew big and strong.

Chesapeake Humane Society recently received a grant from PetSmart Charities® in the amount of $100,000 to address challenges in accessing veterinary care in our region. The rising costs, combined with geographical and cultural barriers, have left many communities out of the veterinary care system altogether. This grant program supports innovative and culturally relevant veterinary programs.
While 70% of American homes feature pets, access to basic veterinary services has not kept pace. This is particularly felt in communities that have additional barriers beyond cost, including language barriers and a lack of veterinary clinics in the vicinity.
Instead of taking pre-planned solutions into selected communities, we will build relationships and assess specific needs, first. This ensures that communities that have been left out are deliberately included in deciding how and when they will access the healthcare they need for their pets. Through this grant, we will be able to ensure the health and safety of all pets and people in our community. Due to transportation barriers in our region, we plan to bring veterinary care to communities with limited to no access. We will work with historically marginalized communities in our region in the ways they need it most so they and their pets can live happy, healthy lives.
