Wow I needed a good happy successful story right now.... Here's the one I needed....I was sitting on the john looking out the window at the rain and saw this pup I didn't recognize. They ran through, down the drive to the street and out of sight. The first step was capture the recording on my camera and get a still. I knew by the time I got out there I might miss the pup and getting info out to get eyes on them was critical in the rescue. The storms that were rolling through were pretty harsh and super scary. She was in panic. The second step is grabbing some very stinky high value lures to bring them back with their nose and a slip lead. The only way into a dogs head when they are in panic mode, is through their nose! Anything that you think is instinctual is wrong.. Don't do it.... Always do the opposite of what your gut says in this situation. Don't chase! Don't call! Don't stand tall!..... Stay still! Stay calm! Stay low! .... Earn trust first. Lure to a safe place off the road..... This pup, like most, was just walking straight down the middle of the road. She was walking her usual walking route unable to find home. If spooked out of their "safe circling route" it makes it harder to get them back. I tried a few times to get her to come up me after I located her again. I even followed her with my hazards down the middle of the street. The hot dogs I grabbed were key! I kept tossing them and tossing them till she trusted me. I sat in a puddle waiting patiently. I knew I had one chance with the slip lead. I was definitely lucky. To find out her name was Daisy, and to find her in the middle of a storm, while I'm going through one on my own, was a big treat to me. My heart dog's name was Daisy and she held a similar story ...... Once I got her on the slip lead I loaded her up and took her to VRC. All fingers were crossed hoping for a chip to help reunite this adorable, soaked, scared pup back to their owner successfully...... There was a chip..... The call was made..... I waited...... And waited..... Then I took off back to the location I found her.... I'm not the best at sitting still.... What better thing to do, than to walk around knocking on some neighbors doors..... So that's what we did and I couldn't be more thrilled to have gotten her back safe and sound with her owners! *Always make sure your pups chip is up to date with contact info! It might be the only line of defense in getting your pup reunited with you again!
My heart is so full!
