offers a unique opportunity for individuals to connect with themselves, others, and the natural world through the healing power of the world’s second oldest domesticated animal, the humble donkey. We currently offer employment opportunities, mentoring, and team building programming for youth and adults. As we complete our certifications and licensing for equine psychotherapy, we will introduce additional staff and programming.

Beautiful Breeds - Meet The Poitou Donkey
The Poitou donkey is a breed of donkey originating in the Poitou region of France. The Poitou donkey is instantly recognizable due to it’s shaggy coat, called a cadanette. One other very noticeable difference is their coats are a lot softer to the touch than the coat of a traditional donkey. This long hair, if not regularly groomed, forms dread-locks.
Today, many Poitou donkeys are shorn for the purpose of hygiene, but some are allowed to grow their coats out as the most prized are the ones with the longest dreadlocks. The coat is always dark brown or black and lacking the stripes and cross-like markings on the coats of some other breeds of donkey.
The Poitou donkey is a large breed; among other European donkeys only the Andalucian donkey reaches a similar size. The adult male Poitou is called a baudet (pronounced 'bo-day') and stands at 14-15 hands and the Poitou mare is called an ânesse and is about one hand lower. They have large, long heads, strong necks, long backs, short croups and round haunches. The limb joints and feet are large, and the legs strong.
Historically, most Poitou donkeys were used to breed large mules, but in recent years, they have found an increasing number of uses. Breed enthusiasts use them for agricultural work, driving and riding.
The temperament of the Poitou has been described as friendly, affectionate and docile. Forget about getting kicked by this guy. You'd actually be in greater danger of being nuzzled to death.
The statistics revealed that in the old province of Poitou, the recorded number of baudets (stallions) between 1949-1977 had fallen from 218 to 12 and the number of ânesses (mares) had fallen from 340 to 13. Only 20 years ago the Poitou donkey faced extinction. Thanks to the resolve of local and national Poitou enthusiasts this beautiful and ancient breed has been saved.
In 1996, Debbie Hamilton, an American, founded the Hamilton Rare Breeds Foundation on a 440-acre farm in Hartland, Vermont, to breed Poitou donkeys. As of 2004, she owned 26 purebred and 14 partbred Poitous, making hers the largest Poitou breeding operation in the United States, and the second largest in the world, behind the French government.

Cypress Farm Registered Miniature Donkeys 🫏 is hiring a barn manager who DOES know something about birthing babies. Our program has over 60 equine. We support Purple Donkey Human Rescue so knowledge and experience in equine emergency care is also helpful. If your experience is not this extensive please do not apply. We love our assistants and volunteers but this is a specific focus. Qualified applicants only, please forward resumes to [email protected] We provide competitive pay, insanely great hours for the equine biz and a 5 day work week. Applicants must be available to work a minimum of 3 weekends per month.

What a great day at with the volunteers! We worked on hooves and cared for a lame donkey 🫏 and learned so much about each other. Dr. Caspers of South Carolina Equine Associates was a huge highlight. Her presentation on donkey 🫏 health and equine emergencies was extremely informative and we hope to share that video with everyone later. Dr. Caspers discussed some important differences between horses and 🫏 donkeys. This helps us get one step closer to understanding these magical and to share them with the public through equine therapeutic activities. We are currently busy working on our trails and putting together programming. We missed and wish our therapist Rose Capozzi well as she prepares to have her second child in a few short weeks.

We definitely need to catch up on instagram but our Cypress Farm Registered Miniature Donkeys Facebook is rounding the corner and approaching 100,000 followers. In 2024 we will be holding more events and selling donkey merch. All proceeds from the sales of our registered donkeys 🫏 go to support our rescues and the programming Purple Donkey Human Rescue will provide to our community. Ask and you shall receive. Cypress Farm Registered Miniature Donkeys Purple Donkey Human Rescue reached out to our farm groups and found the perfect pair of guardian dogs. Welcome Griffith and Duncan from Mint2B Farm in SC. We wanted a pair of guardian dogs, who would learn to look after our smaller donkeys and foals. We wanted puppies that were a bit older and already exposed to livestock. We wanted a breed that wouldn’t be too aggressive toward people, but tough on predators. Lauren and her family recently relocated with their dogs from Washington state where predators are pretty serious. We got to meet both mother and father. We are pretty pleased with these happy healthy brothers!

Not a bad start this morning for the Cypress Farm Registered Miniature Donkeys Purple Donkey Human Rescue crowd at Music City. Including 1st Rosie and Champion , 1st Charm 2nd Cali and 4th Belle and sweet Peter Parker took 1st in his foal class. Thanks to everyone for your support here and at home. Everyone at the show was so patient as we were a mess at the start . Still waiting to enter Rosie best of breed!

Poor Cole 😞 it’s been nothing but hoof issues lately. His abscess is worse so he’s on stall rest. Luckily he can see his people at a distance and has very comforting donkey company. A donkeys bray is designed to be heard over long distances so he can call to his people and they know he’s close by. He and his drove (herd) live in their pasture with a shelter. This is the preferred donkey 🫏 way. But sometimes it’s necessary to restrict movement and this is one of those times. Until the rescue area has a larger shelter and power and cameras ( we are working on that) he needs to be closer to donkey headquarters so he can have company and be looked 👀 after. His foot will be soaked in warm water and epsom salt and wrapped twice a day with a poultice until the abscess erupts and moves out of his hoof. This is not an uncommon condition. We’ve had hoof problem after hoof problem with the rescues lately but it’s never happened to Cole. So far so good. Poor sweet Cole had a rough day dealing with an abscess and now he’s wearing the dreaded duct tape shoe. He was an excellent patient and stood still for over 10 minutes in a bucket of warm water and epsom salt while we soaked him before putting a poltice on his sole. The good thing about a herd is you always have friends around to support you. Thankfully it’s not too bad. We will watch him and if necessary he will get stalled or go to the dry lot with Lovey and Eden. Sisters, Stoney Valley Tulip and Grace have been here since they were babies. They always seem like they are sharing a secret. Wearing their scrubby lighter winter coats its hard to tell if its sweet or bubble bubble toil and trouble. They are a match set and they have a bond that should never be broken. Donkeys make family and social bonds as close as any. If seperated they can become quite depressed and even ill. These two will never have to worry.
