We are almost to the end of our last tractor trailer of NY hay. The rest of this trailer is $10 per bale.

We are excited to be trying out a new supplier from Vermont. Every load of hay will now come with an analysis, and of course our continued clean guarantee. This farmer has been perfecting his horse hay for many years, and the hay will always come from the same source. These are VERY heavy bales at a minimum of 50lb 13 flake bales. The sample I opened had 15 flakes. The photos below are from our new hay source, which will be $12 a bale. If you are interested in trying some let me know!

The trailer and analysis will be coming soon. This is first cut hay.

The numbers of EEE positive mosquitos are on the rise here in NH. Multiple horses in NH have contracted and died from the virus in the last few weeks. We are urging our clients to booster horses that received a vaccine prior to April 1st, young horses under the age of one, older horses over the age of twenty-eight or horses on immunosuppressant medications.

This disease is sometimes referred to as Eastern Equine Encephalitis, EEE, and Triple E. This virus is caused by a bite from an infected mosquito, the infection causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Wild birds are the natural reservoir for the EEE virus, and mosquitos that feed on these birds can transmit the virus to mammals including horses and humans.

With no treatment for this virus, there is a high mortality rate of 90%. Those that survive with supportive care can have permanent brain damage and poor quality of life.

Abrupt onset of symptoms include (but are not limited to) lethargy, fever, anorexia, ataxia, paralysis, seizures and neurologic symptoms like tremors and muscle weakness.

Call us if you have any questions or to schedule a farm call so we can booster your horse.

In light of this scary situation, this is how Dr. George will be doing farm calls to stay safe from the virus.

My son,

I bought you a pony. I didn’t buy it to spoil you. It isn’t a fancy toy to show off to your friends. I bought you a pony because I want you to thrive.

Horses will teach you responsibility, ambition and confidence. Patience, persistence and communication. They’ll teach you compassion, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Respect, trust, and leadership. They’ll be a mirror to your soul, and show you self reflection. You’ll learn that frustration can turn to joy, hope can turn to success, and consistency pays off. When you’ve spent enough time with your horse you’ll know how to feel; with your mind, body and soul. You’ll understand that the most important things in life are those that you’ve nurtured with your hands, sweat, tears and heart.

And above all else my son, horses will teach you love. And I love you, so I bought you a pony.

We are happy to announce miss Alice is feeling much better, and is ready for some light work. She will have availability for 1-2 lessons a week with someone looking to work on seat/foundational riding. No barrel racing, gymkhana etc. She's old and says no thanks to that. She would be looking for a lighter rider for now (small adults and children) while she continues to build up strength and improve. Please pm me for details!

Cheezit is a 9 year old Pinto gelding is 👀 for a new 🏡. He would do best with a confident experienced rider. He has previously been used as a barrel/gymkhana horse, but would be best suited as a pleasure/trail horse. Please contact his owner at 603-519-5548.

Over the years, one of the bad horsemanship traps that I found myself falling into was letting the horse that I was getting on walk off before I had asked for that.

And part of that, I think, was because when you are younger and agile, it just doesn’t seem like any sort of big deal to catch up on the fly.

But it is also true that the moment of mounting, and, to a slightly lesser extent, dismounting, makes the rider vulnerable to all sorts of problems, including some particularly bad falls. Which is why it is so important to teach the horse to stand quietly like a rock until the rider is on, has both feet in the stirrups, has gathered up the reins and has asked the horse to step off.

Just as horses learn the habit of walking away too soon, so they can be taught not to, but it can’t be one way on Saturday, another way on Monday. Consistency is what creates habits, so if you want your horse to acquire the habit of being still while you are getting on, teach that daily.

Try not to make such a big deal about it that it makes the horse nervous or feel trapped, but take the time to readjust if he steps away or sideways from the mounting block before you are ready.

Like so much about horse training, we are creating conditioned response. But not nervous response, which is what we get when we are in a hurry or when we get intense.
