Lyme disease can be very serious for pets. Not only can it health problems later in lyme after exposure, such as Lyme Arthritis, but tick exposure and lyme can cause short term health issues too, like tick paralysis- which is typically treatable and responds rapidly but can require hospitalization, and even ventilation/assisted breathing during treatment.
The best way to prevent lyme disease, is to prevent tick exposure- which will help prevent a host of other illnesses contracted from ticks too: like Ehrlichiosis (ehrlichia spp), Anaplasmosis (Anaplasma canis), Babesiosis (babesia canis), heptazoonosis (heptazoon canis).
And the best way to prevent tick exposure is monthly preventions: such as nexgard, simparica, vectra, revolution, or Bravecto- which is every 3 months.
There is also a lyme (borrelia) vaccine. This vaccine is a once per year vaccine after completing the initial shot and booster 3-4 weeks later. We do offer the lyme vaccine here at Centralia for our patients- if this is something you are interested in, please let us know during your next visit!
Lastly, if you live in a tick-heavy area, its never a bad idea to have a pest company treat your yard, and surrounding area with pet safe products to reduce the tick exposures as well.
