✨ MEET PAISAN ✨

Paisan came to Kona’s K9 Academy with the hopes to improve his leash skills and make walks easier for his mama! He is a long term client while his mom recovers from an injury, so we might be seeing a lot of him! I can’t wait to see what this boy can do!

✨ RECALL ✨

The first part of the video is an example of Kona’s recall prior to my education and training. After training and working with my instructors and explaining to them that Kona can’t, and would never have a recall, the second half of the video is her now after constant training and refinement.

It can be done!

At Kona’s K9 Academy, we have packages that include simply learning a recall but also ones that introduce you to recalls as well as leave it, stay, etc. to help make off leash/long line walks enjoyable and less stressful

NOTE: Please do not take your dog places off leash if they do not have a solid recall! You will see in the second video that Kona is still on a long line for safety. And it took several steps and training steps before we were able to get to the point she is at now. It is extremely dangerous, and the first video was taken prior to any proper education and I’m extremely lucky something did not happen. Keep your pups safe!

✨4 IMPORTANT STAGES OF DOG TRAINING✨

Acquisition, fluency, generalization, and maintenance, all the stages of learning. Most dogs might know the simples like sit and down but they may not have fully gone through the learning stages, which is why they may look at you so confused when you ask for a simple skill in a place they’ve never had to do it before.

This week, I took Kona to a soccer game where she got to practice generalizing new skills that she’s recently learned and also practice maintenance on any of her previously learned skills. It was also a great place to introduce distractions and new things!

In your sessions with Kona’s K9 Academy, we will map out and even include sessions to generalize the skills your pup will learn with us.

We are officially graduates from the Academy of Pet Careers! I am now certified in animal behavior and a specialized trainer through APC after my education there.

At Kona’s K9 Academy, our goal and motivation is to empower the pets that we train, give them confidence, and enforce those desired behaviors!

Kona’s K9 Academy uses positive reinforcement as its training method. Many of you might be wondering, what exactly IS positive reinforcement? And why should you be using it? Positive reinforcement (+R) is part of the four quadrants. +R is adding something to your pups world to make a behavior more likely to occur in the future, in this case it’s usually food (but it can be whatever motivates your pup). Training can be accomplished in a fear free, force free way and +R allows that! Set your pup up for success! Many people see positive reinforcement as bribery, however, if done correctly, your pup should do the asked behaviors without food present but with the expectation of payment (treats, pets, whatever they find rewarding) coming. For +R to work, you have to be willingly to keep at it! It’s hard, but 100% worth it once you get the turn out!

Hey y'all! Welcome to Kona's K9 Academy! My name is Addi Harrison and this is the start of my training business! I got my pup Kona back in 2020 and she was the one who inspired this career path. She inspired my love to work with dogs and I am so thankful for her every single day. I am currently working on (and almost done!) with my education at The Academy of Pet Careers where I am working to be a specialized dog trainer.
