A lot of dogs can sit for a treat in their house, but “don’t listen” in other environments. The commands must be worked on in a variety of situations and around different distractions.

Always say no to on-leash greetings! You should never force an interaction between dogs. Especially one that has them restrained face to face, this is an unnatural greeting for dogs and can end up starting a fight. This is also the quickest way to show your dog that you are not in control of the situation and they should react (however your dog thinks is appropriate) to the other dog coming at them. You are also showing them that playing with the other dog is more fun than listening to you! So the next time your on a walk and see another dog don’t be surprised if they get excited to go play or react towards the other dog!

Imagine this, you are in the kitchen making dinner and your dog is pacing around. You ask them for a “sit” but instead they leave the kitchen. In your head they are no longer in the way, but in their head they just learned that they can ignore your “sit” command and walk away instead. No commands should be optional for your dog! Be sure to follow through 100% of the time to get the behavior you want!

Small dogs are often thought of as annoying because they are small or due to the breed, when in reality it’s because a majority of small dogs don’t get the same guidance and leadership as large dogs. This lead to more anxiety and more behavioral issues in general!
