The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) is issuing a warning to veterinarians and pet owners regarding a recall of 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 due to potential contamination with High Path Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1, more commonly known as Bird Flu.

With the milder temperatures, many people will be heading back to the off-leash areas, doggie daycares, etc., with their pups. Ensuring your dog has had his/her kennel cough vaccine is essential. Kennel cough is highly contagious, which is why it is important to make sure your dog gets the Bordetella vaccine yearly. It will reduce the risk of contracting the virus, lessen the chance of spreading it in a group setting, and reduce the severity of symptoms if your dog does get sick.

If your dog is exhibiting any of the symptoms shown in this infographic, contact your veterinarian to make an appointment. Please let the receptionist know when you call that your dog may have kennel cough or is coughing so they can make sure to have a room ready for you when you arrive. They may ask you to keep your pup in the car until it's time for your appointment. This will lessen the chances of other dogs in the clinic getting sick.

Frozen Watermelon Bites for Dogs 🍉
There’s nothing better than a juicy slice of watermelon on a warm day—except, perhaps, sharing the joy with your four-legged best friend!

Ingredients:
🍉2 cups seedless watermelon, cubed
🍉¼ cup unsweetened coconut water (optional, for added hydration)
Tools:
🍉Blender or food processor
🍉Silicone ice cube tray (fun shapes are always a hit!)
Prepare the Watermelon:
🍉Remove the rind and any visible seeds from the watermelon cubes. Even seedless varieties can sometimes have small, white seeds that should be discarded.
Blend the Ingredients:
🍉Place the watermelon cubes into a blender or food processor. Add coconut water if desired. Blend until the mixture is smooth and pourable.
Pour into Trays:
🍉Carefully pour the watermelon puree into silicone ice cube trays. Silicone molds make it easy to pop out the frozen bites later, and you can find adorable shapes like paw prints or bones for added fun!
Freeze:
🍉Place the tray in the freezer and let it set for at least 4-5 hours or overnight.
Serve:
🍉Once fully frozen, pop the treats out of the mold and serve them to your pup as a refreshing snack. Store the extras in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2 weeks.

Canine influenza, or dog flu, is a highly contagious respiratory disease. Caused by the canine influenza virus, canine influenza was first reported in dogs in the United States in 2004 and has since been reported in 46 states. Most of these reports have been isolated disease outbreaks, indicating that canine influenza hasn’t gained a strong foothold in the general dog population. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, about 80 percent of dogs exposed to the virus will get sick with symptoms like a soft, moist cough, nasal discharge, and lethargy.

Does Your Dog Need the Flu Shot?
That depends. Here are some factors that increase a dog’s risk of getting the dog flu:

👉Staying at a boarding facility
👉Frequently visiting the dog park
👉Participating in social events, such as dog shows and agility events

Frozen Chicken Broth Bone Treats
Ingredients
- 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth (ensure it is onion- and garlic-free)
- 1/4 cup plain unsweetened yogurt (optional, for added creaminess)
Instructions
1. Pour the low-sodium chicken broth into a mixing bowl.
2. If using yogurt, whisk it into the chicken broth until fully blended.
3. Carefully pour the mixture into silicone molds or an ice cube tray. Bone-shaped molds are great for dog treats, but any mold will work.
4. Tap the molds gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles.
