Did you know that whether your dog needs a haircut or not depends on their coat type and length of fur, rather than the season?
A dog's fur helps to keep them warm in winter AND cool in summer, so a summer cut may not always be the kindest cut.
The breeds who benefit most from a summer cut are those with a single-layer coat that grows continuously. (Technically, they have hair, not fur). These pups need regular trimming because like us, their hair is always growing out.
Breeds like the Golden Retriever and Alaskan Husky have double coats that actually insulate them from the heat during summer.
A summer cut would leave them less protected from heat stroke and sunburn.
But we all know that in springtime, shed happens, so a spring groom (and regular brushing) is definitely a good idea!
Unsure about that summer cut? It pays to ask your vet, and check with us for an opinion. At Four Paws, we want what's best for our fur-clients, always!
