Antifreeze/ethylene glycol toxicity!

*Antifreeze is very important to cars, and very dangerous to animals. Keep it up high, in a spill proof container and watch for spills! The smallest lick can be fatal to animals, even just a lick of their paws after walking through a puddle!

*Very appealing taste to animals! Manufacturers are now starting to put a bittering agent in the antifreeze, but some animals still like the taste.

*Signs of toxicity can develop anywhere between 30 minutes to 12 hours! These include excessive thirst, vomiting and lethargy.

*Depending on the animal’s size, death can occur in as little as 12 hours to 72 hours!

*Get your animal to a veterinarian as soon as possible to start some IV fluids!

If your animal has ingested something that you are concerned may be toxic, please call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Hotline at 888-426-4435.

It’s that time of year again! Here are some tips on keeping your pets safe this winter:
* Heaters and fires in the fireplace are great, especially in this cold Wyoming weather. Our furry friends may want to curl up next to heat to keep warm. Keeping an eye on our pets so they don’t burn themselves is highly important. We also don’t want them knocking over heaters!
* Vehicles do pose a danger to our furry family members, even in the winter. Just like in the summer, don’t leave your pets in the car for long periods of time. The temperature inside the vehicle can drop rapidly leading to hypothermia.
* Make some noise! Animals outdoors may be looking for a place to curl up for warmth, and the engine of a car is very warm. Bang on the hood before starting the engine to scare off any animals that may have decided that would be a good place to keep warm.
* Wyoming winds make the temperature drop even more. Provide shelter for animals that are outside, even for short amounts of time. This will help keep them warmer than just leaving them without any way of getting out of the wind.

Stay warm and safe this winter!

With permission from this little one’s owner, we present you with Benedict.
This adorable little hamster is handled multiple times a day, leading to him being much easier to treat at vet visits. We were able to examine and help Benedict with no problems.
Hamsters are seen as creatures that will bite and be aggressive all the time, so they are not handled very much. One thing to remember is that hamsters bite out of fear, usually not from aggression. Try to think if something bigger than you tried to pick you up. You would be scared too!
One way to help the little one get over being scared is to get them used to your scent. Place the cage near where you would hang out the most or even keep your dirty laundry nearby. This way your smell is less scary to them. You can even talk to them, so they also get used to your voice. Hamsters are nocturnal, so it’s best to try and plan spending time with your hamster in the evening when they are awake.
Slowly start introducing your hand. Don’t pick them up while doing this, but just place your hand on the top or on the side of the cage to let the hamster come to you to check it out. Offering them treats from your hand is another way to have the hamster positively associate your scent.
The main thing to remain calm. Yelling, screaming or sudden movements may frighten the hamster more, leading them to bite.
Doing research on hamster before getting one is the best way to ensure that you and the hamster have the best relationship and life possible!
