Today is Pet Obesity Awareness Day!

Did you know, approximately 61% of cats and 59% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese? Obesity in our pets can lead to several medical conditions and worsen symptoms of conditions such as osteoarthritis and heart disease.

A 15 pound domestic shorthair cat is the equivalent to a 254 pound 5'9" human male (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention)

Does your dog have stinky breath? Buildup on their teeth? Are you wondering what you can do? We recommend regular dental care for all of our patients! Did you know that dogs have a version of an ACL and can tear/rupture them, just like humans? There are usually two routes of management that we follow: either rehabilitation or orthopedic surgery depending on the severity of the injury. One surgical correction that some orthopedic surgeons use is called a TPLO procedure. Injured CCLs are extremely common in patients, especially large breed dogs such as golden retrievers and labrador retrievers.

Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy surgery, or TPLO surgery for dogs, is done to repair a ligament in your dog's stifle joint and helps prevent future injury.

Today is World Rabies Day! Did you know that Rabies is present in Wyoming? This is why it is so crucial to vaccinate your pets for Rabies (and other diseases) regularly and consistently. The attached map (courtesy of University of Wyoming) details all of the positive cases of Rabies that were identified between January 1, 2024 and July 31, 2024.

Intestinal parasites are very common in our four-legged friends, especially Tapeworms in our area! This is why it is important to ensure that your dog or cat is on a proper deworming protocol especially when they are hunters or they enjoy bodies of water or hanging out with their friends!

It’s important to know the basics of intestinal worms, like how dogs get worms, symptoms of worms in dogs, and prevention methods for your dog's well-being.
