“The Cisco Kidd” aka Cisco is our only AQHA Appendix c**t by Small Change (North Rock) out of our OTTQH mare Devon’s Flying Pie (Devon’s Signature).

He’s been learning the “ropes” in CA for the past couple months and is on track to start roping live cattle in the next coming weeks.

Cisco is a unique mix of polo/race bred Thoroughbred and old school running QH blood. He’s not only a great grandson of Northern Dancer on his sires side but a great grandson of Pie In The Sky on his dam side as well.

For us, It takes a lot more than just proven ability and conformation to make a stallion. The number one thing we look for is disposition, and boy this stud c**t has one of the nicest minds we’ve had the pleasure of raising and being around.

We have big goals for this guy. He’s already exceeding expectations and showing just how nice our lines cross on stock horse blood. Cisco is roughly over 75% Thoroughbred.

While he was bred to be a Polo Pony, which he will see a polo field, in order to accomplish what we want todo with his breeding career after his performance career, he has to earn his Register of Merritt or ROM. To do that he needs to earn 10 or more points showing through AQHA. Cisco has had half sisters make great rope/ ranch horses as well as his dam. So far he’s proving to have what it takes and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

We love a unique name, so much so that we often have foal name stick to the broodmares name or have a theme for the foal crop. For example, all of the foals out of our OTTQH mare, “Devon’s Flying Pie” aka Margarita, are named for famous movie Cowboys or Cowgirls.

This year was no different. Our OTTB mare, “Meanerthanthedevil” was given the barn name Moxx, after a character in one of our favorite movies “Varsity Blues”. We had several “Varsity Blues” names picked out for her 2024 filly. She was just assigned one today. While it’s not the one we hoped for, it’s still a fantastic name!

Say hello officially, to “Ilovethatdog” aka Billie Bob (BB for short) a 2024 Chestnut JC Thoroughbred filly by Hess Max A Million (Small Change) out of Meanerthanthedevil (Kick On”

We sure do love BB, she’s the first foal for our junior stallion, Hess Max A Million and the first foal for Moxx. This filly will be a phenomenal Polo prospect or an all around prospect. She will be available this spring!

Our first mare is due end of April, the rest follow behind in May.

“Crown H Roja” by Dolfina Legendario (Aiken Cura E01) out of Zinger (Small Change) We are missing the warmer weather, green pastures and slicked off babies. This filly is the first out cross of our Polo lines on modern Polo lines. She is a granddaughter of Dolfina Cuartetera (genetically) and Aiken Cura (genetically). She is also a great, great granddaughter of Northern Dancer. This filly is 100% polo bred. She is one of the prettiest and most athletic foals we have raised. Shes a coming two year old and we are so excited to start her late spring. We are expecting a Dolfina Popular foal this spring who is very closely related to Roja.

“Change My Mojo” a 2016 Black APHA Appendix stallion by Small Change (North Rock) out of Mischiefs Sacred Indian (Sacred Indian)

For all those horse kids that read Walter Farley’s, “The Black Stallion”, and dreamed of having their own, we thought we’d show off ours.

We are expecting two Mojo foals this spring! He is bred to our OTTQH mare and one of our OTTB Polo Pony mares.

Mojo is by our late stallion, Small Change, and out of the last own daughter of the World Champion APHA stallion Sacred Indian. Making Mojo a great grandson of Northern Dancer and a grandson of Sacred Indian.

He’s a unique cross of our Polo lines on cow/ running bred Paint lines. We cannot wait to see how he crosses on Pixie Stix and Margarita.

We have one over the half way mark and the others are getting close!

Pixie Stix is our OTTB made polo pony mare and she’s at 154 days. She is bred to our APHA Appendix stallion, “Change My Mojo”. This foal has a 50 % chance of being grey and has no chance of being red.

Minnie is our newest addition, she is also a OTTB and a daughter of the recently retired, Big Brown. She is bred to Sapo Caset’s Polo stallion, “Dolfina Popular”. She is at 145 days.This foal will be close related to our yearling filly, “Crown H Roja”.

“Midnight Mindset” aka Minnie a 2018 Bay OTTB mare by Big Brown (Boundary) out of Mindset (Coronado’s Quest)

Smack is carrying a foal by our stallion, “Hess Bodidldy”. She is also a OTTB. This is her first foal and we’re hoping she passes her lovely long legs and personality. Shes at 150 days!

And last but not least is Rita, our OTTQH mare. She is also bred to our stallion, “Change My Mojo”. We have the same color chances with her as we do pixie. We are very excited for this baby. Rita sadly lost her 2023 foal in utero and so far everything with this foal has been textbook. She is our first due and is at 179 days!

It’s a hard to be a red head today.

Anna and BB are learning the importance of standing tied, away from each other, in different parts of the barn for a couple hours at a time. Although, they don’t seem to agree with us.

In true red filly fashion, they threw dramatic fits until they realized it was easier just to stand tied like ladies then be heathens.

While these two certainly are quite the characters, it’s good for them to build some more.

The most consistent thing about two year olds they are always going to look goofy in a growth spurt.

These gals are not real thrilled about having to earn their keep, they still think they’re “justa a baby”.

Feathers is our biggest of the two year olds and she’s our only AQHA Appendix filly. She is also our first and only grey by our late stallion, Small Change. She is a full sibling to our junior stallion, The Cisco Kidd. Her dam is our OTTQH mare we featured last week, Devon’s Flying Pie. Feathers has be retained as polo pony/ rope horse prospect.

Miss Kitty is our most charismatic two year old. She has more personality in her right foot than most horses do in their whole body. She is our last full Thoroughbred filly by Small Change. We joke he gave us twins 11 years apart, his first filly, Zinger, is bay with a little white star and has a small white spot on the back of her right hind. Kitty, his last, is bay with the exact same markings. Her dam is our OTTB Polo Pony mare, Holykitty. She has been retained as a Polo pony prospect as well.

We were lucky enough to be able to reach out to one of our favorite mares previous owners and get a couple pictures of her in her prime!

“Devons Flying Pie” aka Margarita a 2009 Grey AQHA made by Devons Signature (Devons Lane) out of Fly On The Pie (Pie In The Sky).

We purchased Rita in 2018 and she’s been quite the addition to our program! She was started on the track but never raced. In her younger years, she was a consistent 1D barrel horse and had placed at several pro rodeos. When she came to us she was mostly used as an all around horse, carrying flags, roping, ranch work and even as a lesson Polo Pony.

She has since been retired due to an injury and is now one of our best producing mares. She has gave us our up and coming junior stallion, “The Cisco Kidd”, and our two year old filly, “JMH Whippoorwill”.

She is currently in foal to our Appendix APHA stallion, “Change My Mojo”, for a 2025 foal.

“The Cisco Kidd” a 2020 Bay AQHA Appendix stallion by Small Change (North Rock) out of Devon’s Flying Pie (Devon’s Signature).

Cisco returned to California for training in August! He is maturing more and more in every update we see. He was started as a late three year old as we wanted him big enough and mature enough to handle training and he took right to it. You’d never know he was a stallion.

Our goal is to show him in the Heeling and earn his ROM (Register of Merit). We are taking our time with this young stallion as we truly think he is special.

He was bred to be a polo pony. His sire having multiple full and half siblings make high goal and mid goal polo ponies. He will see a polo field. We are taking the proper steps to ensure his Polo/ Roping career and his future breeding career are as successful as they can be.

We are beyond excited for this young stallions future. He is going to be a cool out cross on any modern bloodlines, whether it be AQHA, APHA, Jockey Club and Polo.

This guy is going to be one to watch out for!

It’s weaning day!

Our 2024 fillies are officially weanlings!

It went without a hitch. Both girls are taking it pretty well. ( We’ll give Scooter our “wonder weaner” the credit, food was more important than his photo op). Being a baby is hard but it’s easier with good snacks and a fun babysitter!

Both mommas returned to the mob and are enjoying their “alone” time.

We’ve got baby bumps!!

Our bred mommas were soaking up the October sun napping. Some were caught mid nap, others just after.

Some of our mares are very photogenic. Others not so much 😅

They are in the order of when they will foal out!

Rita and Pixie (could not be bothered to smile for pictures) are both bred to our junior stallion, “Change My Mojo”. One APHA/AQHA foal and one JC/APHA foal. Both have a 50% chance of throwing a grey foal!

Smack is bred to our other junior stallion, “Hess Bodidldy”. This is one of two full Thoroughbred foals we will have next year. Smack is one of our OTTB broodmares!

Minnie, our newest addition, is bred to the polo stallion, Dolfina Popular. This foal is incredibly special to us. We cannot wait to see him/her. Minnie’s sire, Big Brown, was just retired to Old Friends after a very successful breeding career. Minnie is one of our highest money earning mares!

All of these foals are potential polo prospects!

Off The Track Thoroughbreds mean the world to us at Hess Thoroughbreds and Performance Horses.

We have had owned over 20 OTTBS (and a couple OTTQHs) since the family started playing polo in the late 70’s. They have gone on to make polo ponies, ranch horses, rodeo horses and broodmares.

We have only had two broodmares that were not OTTB.

We thought we’d show snippets of our current OTTB mares and their best start! Now the quality of some of the shots are not the best as a couple of the mares did not race recently.

“Crown H Roja” a 2023 Chestnut Thoroughbred filly by Dolfina Legendario (Aiken Cura E01) out of Zinger (Small Change) This filly is one of the most athletic we have raised. Roja is we what we call natural. She is 100% polo bred. Her sire is the playing stallion Dolfina Legendario, who’s by Aiken Cura Clone E01 out of a Cuartetera clone.
