FRIDAY FIDO TIP
To train your dog to leave food on the floor, start with them on leash and yummy treats. Place a treat on the floor while saying, LEAVE IT and the give them a treat from your hand. Continue to offer them a treat while they remain focused on you. When the dog looks at the treat on the floor and then back at you, reward them with a treat. Keep this training session short, only 30 seconds, then move away from the treat on the floor and reward them with a treat from your hand. Now you can move back closer to the treat on the floor with the dog still on leash, telling them to LEAVE IT and providing a treat from your hand. You can work this back and forth about 3 times, having them only close to the treat on the floor for 30 seconds before the training is over. Make sure to end with providing a treat and picking up the one on the floor.
Happy Training!!!!!

Service dog in training Journey is working on retrieving different items at the training facility without many distractions. He is eager to pick any items that is dropped and happy to bring that item to his trainer Justine. On the other side, he is also learning to leave food on the floor alone while he is lying down, walking past and recalling right over it.

Service dog R***r spent some public training time with the trainers since his partner Patty wasn't able to get out due to some medical issues. R***r does a great job of holding his stay while the trainer returns and then recalls when called. Completing these in public with increased distractions can sometimes be challenging. His partner might use a stay is she was having an exam done and R***r needed to be out of the way. The recall is especially important for those "just in case" situations. This could be a leash breaking, collar slipping off, a gate being left open or a person dropping the leash. Its a good idea to work on it so when it does happen, nobody panics.

Let's go for a ride means different things to different dogs, but for Assistance dogs in training, it means more training. The trainers make sure that the dogs do not try to get in the front seat or take any items from the middle console (we may have food & drinks there). They are also asked to hold a down position when we are moving for their safety and of course share the space with any other dogs or occupants. There is no chewing of their equipment, beds or each other. When dogs are preparing for different vehicles or airplanes, we make their space much smaller or use trainer's vehicles. It's important that the dogs are relaxed and use that time to rest so they are ready to work when they arrive wherever they are going.

Assistance Dogs in training Bam, David, and Journey training out in public while the trainers are eating. Learning to stand or lie down patiently while food is being ordered and then walking next to their trainer while carrying the food to the table, can be hard work. Once under or beside the table, they relax and even take a nap while the trainers are eating. The dogs work on holding their position for the duration of the meal and willingness to share the space with another dog in training (or a trainer's legs).

Service dog in training Drago has high hopes that puppy in training Richard will throw his toy for him. No luck, Richard just kept sleeping. Richard did enjoy some time with retired Service dog Jerry and pet dog Ranger while hanging out at Board Member Rio's house!
Puppy in training Richard, a Newfie/Golden cross, is 19 weeks old and 40 #. He is learning so much from all the dogs he spends time with.

Thank you to Governor Gordon for once again proclaiming October as Assistance Dog Awareness Month! Twenty-one Assistance Dogs have been placed with people in Wyoming since 2013, increasing their independence. Guide dogs, Service dogs and Facility dogs have enriched the lives of others and truly made a difference!
We celebrate all of our 56 teams and mourn the loss of those that have left us too early, dogs and people. You can help by telling others about Assistance Dogs, K9s 4 Mobility, and the difference these dogs make to their partners, every day!

Service dog in training Journey, who is a 100 # Newfie/Lab cross and 16 months old, is doing great training out in public. He works nicely beside his trainer Vanessa and the shopping cart at the grocery store. He is left on a stay while Vanessa walks away and then returns. He is learning to ignore people an enticing smells, all while paying attention to his trainer. Good job Journey!

Teaching your dog to retrieve is not only helpful but it's fun for them too! All of the dogs in training begin by learning to retrieve one item and once that item is consistently retrieved successfully, the dog learns different items. The dog receives a treat once the item is delivered to the trainer!
For more information on teaching a dog to retrieve, see our YouTube channel and have fun teaching your dog new things!

Assistance Dog in training David is doing a great job of holding his stay and then coming to his trainer Vanessa when called while at the grocery store! One of the trainers job is to make sure each dog can perform all their obedience commands while in public and around distractions. Then they can begin to work on the physical skill tasks while out in public after they have been successful at the training facility.

Assistance Dogs in training David & Drago spent some time at King Soopers & Starbucks inside the grocery store. Did you know that King Soopers has a community rewards program? It's easy to sign up with your rewards number (usually your phone number) and just choose K9s 4 Mobility as your nonprofit organization on the King Soopers website or app. Then each time you shop, King Soopers donates their money to K9s 4 Mobility!

October is known for lots of different things besides Halloween. It's also Assistance Dog Awareness Month in Wyoming!! We want to bring attention to these wonderful dogs that make such a difference in the lives of others. You know the saying, "It takes a village"? Well, it takes a TEAM to make each one of these Assistance Dogs ready for their forever partner. Team members include our many breeders who donate or reduce the cost of a puppy for the chance to become an Assistance Dog. Puppy sponsors help with the cost of the puppy and get to name them. The puppy raiser commits a year of care, love, and training so the puppy has a good foundation for training. The trainers spend countless hours teaching the puppy how to become a dog, learn physical skill tasks, and lots of impulse control. The donors and event sponsors provide the funds necessary to cover the cost involved in caring for the dogs and their training facility. The board members make sure that all the procedure are in place and fundraising is in place so the organization can thrive and continue to train and place more Assistance Dogs. Volunteers give their time to help in different activities and events, and we so appreciate them. Last but not least is our cat Latte and dog Nugget who assist in the training of every dog.

K9s 4 Mobility is here to offer a way to increase your independence through an Assistance Dog trained just for you. We want everyone to know that they are people who care and want to help.
Our puppy raisers give their love and time so that someone, they have never met, can benefit and achieve some independence. The trainers pour their heart and soul into each dog to make them the best they can be. Our board members make tough decisions and commit to sustainability of the organization so we can keep helping others. Our donors, supporters, and volunteers provide money and time to cover the cost of providing care to the dogs and facilities.
We hope that you never need an Assistance Dog, but if you do, we are here to help.

Becoming a Puppy Raiser is a Volunteer Opportunity like no other! It is a selfless act to give your love and time to raising a puppy and then let it go to make a difference in the life of someone else, like Phyllis and the many other partners of K9s 4 Mobility.

Puppy Raisers are responsible for one of our puppies for 12 -14 months and spend that time teaching commands, manners and exposing them to a variety of environments. This is an emotional and rewarding experience that some choose to repeat again, while others are fulfilled after one puppy. One thing is for certain, the puppy will change your life.

If this is something that you are interested in, please reach out to us and we can answer any questions you might have!

Service dog in training Bam, goes with his trainer Vanessa to the salon. Training dogs to lie quietly for long periods of time doing nothing, is actually one of the hardest things to train for. These young and active dogs prefer to be busy and for sure getting attention! Good job Bam!!!
Thank you to Bam's puppy raiser for taking him lots of different places and teaching him to be patient!

Are there really any bad dogs, or just bad dog handlers/owners? Its easy to blame the dog especially when they cannot tell us what is going on with them. How do they think? How do they let us know?
Most dogs will display behaviors or cues to let you know what they want or don't want, where it hurts or when they are confused. We, have to be paying attention to catch these behaviors and cues. It could be the slight movement of an ear, licking their lips, yawning, pawing at us, biting at their body part, panting, pacing, whining or being more sensitive to sounds or movement.
Watch your dog, pay attention to slight movements, make note of changed behaviors, and get to know your dog.
