Good evening from the Briarwood

It is with great joy that I can now say the farm dog has found his fam where he will have snuggles, hugs, and kisses galore and is the Lone Ranger no more.

Elmer is going to a wonderful home in Montana where he will have some space to roam and a couple of young boys to tag along with.

Thank you all for your interest, your prayers and support to get this little guy from the Briarwood to the big world beyond.

The Lone Ranger rides again!!

These past 2 weeks have been busy ones here at the Briarwood. In the past week alone Saturday to Saturday, I’ve put about 2000 miles on the car meeting up with folks to hand off their newest family member…

The puppy room is empty, not disassembled yet, but pretty close. Only one lone pup remains Elmer. He will be the Lone Ranger and really does need his Tonto.

Elmer has graduated from the nursery and is now getting used to the “big” dogs and transitioning from being on the bigger side, to low man on the totem pole where everyone but Patches the cat is bigger than he is. He’s making the adjustment well, learning a new pecking order, how to eat from a real dog bowl instead of the puppy feeding trough, and learning house rules. He’s so fast to pick things up that it’s usually only 1 or 2 corrections and he’s got it.

While we’re waiting for his perfect forever home, he’ll get more groundwork done. He’s continuing to use the litter box that has now been moved into a more central place in the house, so potty training is easy peasy. He’ll go on his first formal outing to socialize him this weekend. We’re going to have a wonderful cooling spell so he can start breaking hearts in town at all of the dog friendly stores, and we have a bunch.

Elmer would do well with an active family or on a farm/ranch. He is a watcher, most often sitting off away from the other puppy fray observing his surroundings. He was the first pup to venture off and go exploring the new areas of the yard. He’s quick to play with his uncle Buckeye and has become his shadow.

He’s a sweet pup and some have asked “what’s wrong with him that he’s still available… The simple answer is nothing is wrong with him. I’ve had 4 people who would take him in a heartbeat if their life circumstances were different than what they currently are.

Elmer isn’t a Fud or a Dud… he’s just a pup whose forever family hasn’t shown up yet… but they will, and he’ll be the bestest boy for them. Whoever ends up with him will end up with a true gem… a very precious pup…

If you think Elmer would be a good fit for you and your family email me at Briarwoodes .com or you can use messenger to reach out to me. I’ve got all of his health info available to serious inquiries, as well as pedigrees of Akeena and Grif. Distance really isn’t a problem as I transport my own dogs. Until he finds his forever home, he’ll be home here at the Briarwood…

Good night and God Bless

How has it been 7 weeks already ?!

Good evening from the Briarwood. They say time flies when you’re having fun…. If that’s true then it’s certainly buzzed by us here.

It’s been a full week for the Sunday Blessing litter. After our wagon photo shoot, the clouds moved in and it looked like it might strom,,, it did for about 2 minutes…certainly not enough to quench the evenings light show. The puppies took the booms and popping that was happening all round the neighborhood in stride. Another thing for them to experience without any effect on them. For the most part they slept right through it all.

They continue to meet new people of all different ages, shapes and sizes and take it all in stride.

They all love to be outside and they’ve been working on their landscaping skills, gnawing on the low hanging limbs of one of the larger shrubs in the backyard… Digging up roots and running with them has become another fun game, along with tag and a couple of wrestling bouts to finish out the outside play time.

The pool from the 6-week photos is still up and full, so that’s been another fun item for them to play around and use as a giant watering hole. Finally, a “dish” big enough for them to all fit around again.

Next week the puppies my find themselves back in the pool for some chill time as it’s going to be pushing 100 here from Thursday through the following Thursday. So, the rubber duckies could come out of retirement and be joined by who knows what else… Only time will tell.

The pups will start to leave to their new homes in about 2 weeks and the nursery will become larger and quieter. They'll trickle out slowly so as to not upset Akeena too much.

All of the pups are spoken for except for 2 of the boys that need their forever homes still.

Elmer, red collar, is a thinker. He likes to watch and is take everything in. He’s very confident and is often exploring new places in the yard well before any of the other pups have ventured that far. He’s very affectionate and loves to hang out with me in my chair while I relax after work.

Elwood, orange collar, is a lover. He’s a rough and tumble guy that is quick to play with the other pups. He checks in often from his explorations and I can often find him under my chair just hanging out taking in the show. He is a guy who uses his nose to evaluate his surroundings, he sniffs everything and that could easily be used to train him for a multitude of things from SAR work, to varmint control, or tracking. Elwood loves a good cuddle and snuggle too.
Both have great personalities and would make a wonderful companion dog or working addition to your farm.

If you’d like more information about the litter, Sire and Dam, as well the remaining boys, I’d love to talk with you. You can email me at [email protected] or you can IM me on messenger.

Pictures are in order
Edison – black collar
Flo – yellow collar
Elmer – red collar
Elwood – orange collar
Ma – hot pink collar
Zoot – aqua collar
Ernie – lime green collar
JJ – purple collar

May this week bring you and yours grace and peace, kindness and abundant blessings.

Good night from the Briarwood

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY !!

Happy Independence Day from the Briarwood.
The sun has set here, and the show has begun.
As I type the sound of popping and booming is all around the house. I can’t help but think about the words of our national anthem.

Certainly, there are “bombs bursting in air” and the glare of rockets in red, white and blue that light up the night sky and then turn into what looks like tiny shooting stars that stream down from the sky. There’s nothing like it really and I love fireworks the big dogs not so much.

The puppies are taking is all in stride and the only sound coming from the puppy nursery is the sound of barking and the noise of 8 puppies rough housing in a space that pales to the “outside”
Personalities are out and glowing. Not a shy one in the bunch, but confident and outgoing little guys. Their first trip to the back yard was a huge adventure for them and they did so well. Not one hid, but each ventured out off of the patio onto the dirt. They found weeds and grass to eat and sticks. I swear that these guys are part Beaver just like their papa. They’ve never met a stick that they didn’t like.

They will start leaving for their forever homes in a few short weeks and the house will be hauntingly quiet. My office will be put back together, but the hole that they leave in my heart will remain.

Elmer (red collar) and Elwood (orange collar) are still looking for their forever home. Elmer is outgoing and very confident. He’s first to venture out and check out new things. Elwood is a light hearted guy. He was first to copy Akeena to drink out of the pool. Both are eager to please and even now are quick to come to “puppy puppy”.

The pictures today are our way of honoring the day and having an excuse to go support the local economy. Enjoy the evening show. Maybe you too will find the words of “our song” creeping into your mind as you watch the “bombs bursting in air”.

I don’t know about you, but here I have much to be thankful for, my freedom to speak, to write and to worship. May God bless America and let his face shine upon us.

Pups in order are:
Edison – black
Flo – yellow
Elmer – red
Elwood – orange
Ma – hot pink
Zoot – aqua (Arwen/Ari)
Ernie – Lime (Sam for Samwise Gamgee)
JJ – purple

4 weeks of Blessings!

Good evening from the Briarwood. This week marks four weeks these little ones have breathed air and not yet walked sod… that’s coming this weekend. These pups are such a joy, they make me laugh at their antics every day. At 4 weeks now they have found their legs and have moved from that wobbly walk to all out running in their penthouse digs. They have found their little voices, barking at each other to instigate play and a yip when the play has become a bit too rough.

These 4 weeks have flown by and before I know it the office will be just an office again and not a nursery. These little ones have added so much to my plate, but it’s all so very worth the extra time. I’ve had folks over for lots of social time and each little one has done well. There’s not a shy one in the bunch and all have been very easy going, taking time on their backs like it was a walk in the park. They all are content to settle in anywhere on my lap and catch some nap time while getting that individual attention each need.

Their education has continued with the addition of toys, balls and even more handling for the weekly nail trims and just general messing with.

There are a couple left in this litter that are still looking for their forever family. These are well rounded pups, that have a ton of potential to do a variety of tasks.

Grif has left a legacy here at the Briarwood that is as large as Willow’s, and he will only be bred one more time before he’s retired to manage hang out here chasing bunnies and keeping the grounds free of mice and anything else that is an unwanted guest.
He has a wonderful pedigree tracing back to Schoeman, Beebe, Butcher, Red Bank and Anderson.

If you’re considering a companion or an addition to your farm/ranch these pups will certainly fit the bill. PM me on Messenger or you can email me for more information at [email protected]

Enjoy the pictures, I took more that I’ve posted but I didn’t want to crash my upload.

Sunday Morning Blessings

It all started at about 8pm on Saturday evening. Somehow, I knew I was going to be in for a long night. By the time Sunday morning’s sunrise was happening, here at the Briarwood we were watching yet another morning miracle, Akeena blessed us with a litter of 8 beautiful shaded sable puppies 4 boys and 4 girls.

All the pups are healthy and growing faster than I can keep up. It seems that each time I look in the whelping box they’ve grown more.

This litter lines are some of the foundation lines for the breed, and I consider this a conservation breeding to preserve them. Grif goes back to the Schoeman lines, and Akeena traces her linage to Mohn and Wyss.

Pictures and the litter theme will be forth coming. Photos will mark the pups first full week on planet Earth, so I’ll take and post them this coming Saturday.

I’m expecting this to be a great cross for anything you could imagine doing with your dog. If you want a companion dog… check, an active trail, hiking, walking, outdoors dog… check. Need a good ranch hand for your hobby or larger farm… check. Want a cheaper in-house babysitter… check. Need a farm manager and a right-hand man (dog)… check. Well, you get the picture. The genetics are all there for these pups to be anything you would expect an English Shepherd to be.

Like all of the pups here at the Briarwood, these little ones are raised in the house, litter box trained and socialized with a variety of sizes of humans. Each is handled daily, loved on, played with and touched all over. The goal always is to produce healthy pups with the balanced temperament to match.

Pedigrees are attached with health and genetic testing results upon request.

Some of these little ones are still available so PM or email me (briarwoodes @ yahoo.com) if you’re interested

PS Congratulations to Ann Gingell Bifoss, as she is the winner of the game to guess the date, count and s*x.. she got 2 out of the 3 right.

Let the games begin !!

So here is where the game begins. If you’ve followed The Briarwood for any or all of my litters, I always play a game with the Xray for a puppy count. The Xray was taken today, and I’ve attached it below.

If you would like to play here is what were looking for. If you’ve ever been to a baby shower this will all seem a tab bit familiar.

You’ll need to guess the following:
Due date (the possibilities are 5/17-5/26)
How many puppies Akeena will deliver
Boys/Girls how many of each.

The closest person will receive a fun gift. If there’s a tie both people will get a gift. You get the picture or the Xray !

I’ll be keeping a log of everyone who decides to play. I’m posting this announcement on several pages so it should be fun.

The reason for the game is...

Puppies are once again coming to the Briarwood.

This year’s cross is with Akeena and Grif. The sire is Grif, he's a large male that has Schoeman lines as well as Cimmaron, Beebe, Butcher and Anderson. Akeena's lines are just as nice, as she also can trace her linage back to Anderson, Beebe and then add in Wyss and Mohn. Her sire is a Cedar Creek dog too.

I'm expecting these pups to be on the larger, thicker side as Grif is a good 60-65 pounds and Akeena is 50 pounds. Grif is has a "farm manager" temperament and is a very rules-oriented dog. Akeena is much more laid back and her personality is more go with the flow. Grif is the policeman of the yard and house. Nothing gets in that's not supposed to be there. He passively protective of me but is great with new folks when he is properly introduced.

Akeena, on the other hand, she's never met a stranger. She's wonderful with kids and adults alike and is a very social dog. This will be Akeena's first litter, but if they are anything like their mom, they will be quiet pups with a low drive for stock but a very biddable.

I’m looking for these pups to be great companion dogs, as well working dogs as pups from the past crosses with Grif have been versatile, enough so as to be/do anything that their owners asked of them. There are still spaces available on my interest list.

I started my 62nd journey around the sun Friday and this year once again finds me blessed. I’m a bit late in expressing my thank you to all of you who were so very gracious to extend birthday wishes to me.

Each year I’m amazed and humbled that so many of you would take time out of your day to remember me with fondness.
I have no idea what this lap will bring, but I’m confident that the Lord will provide everything that is needed. May the Lord be gracious and kind to all of you. May he bless you and keep you, and may his face shine upon you.

Thank you again for your love and support communicated in a shout out on my birthday. It means a great deal to me.

Happy 2nd birthday to the "Duck" litter. It was Willow's last and now she's the grand Dam if the Briarwood.

Her legacy continues though with our next litter expected to hit the ground in a little over 2 weeks.

Happiest of birthdays to my little ducklings

News from the briarwood

We’re only into the first 12 weeks of 2024 and so much has happened. We’ve leaped ahead a whole day in our annual calendar, depending on where you live, time was turned forward, and now Spring has sprung!

With arrival of spring, the world awakes from its annual rest and slumber to bring forth bright colors and new life. Whether its chicks and ducks, or the bright green of the new grasses as they spring up, Spring welcomes to the earth to the long-anticipated newness of the season.

Here in Wyoming, the first buds on the long dormant trees are appearing and the new sprigs of the grasses of the Great Plains are coming alive to welcome the Robins and warmer temperatures.
Literally and figuratively, Spring has arrived again here at the Briarwood.

After retiring Willow, and then missing last year’s litter, winter figuratively arrived at the Briarwood. This has been a time of rest and regrouping, stepping back so I could move forward. Decisions were made and the foundation stones have been laid again, slightly re arranged, but even better than before.

I’m excited to announce we’ll have 2024 Spring arrivals!

Pups should be popping out in mid-May. Once the pregnancy has been confirmed with an ultrasound in about 3-4 weeks there will be more news to follow.

There is already a wait list for these precious ones, so if you may be considering adding a furry friend to your household this summer here’s your chance.

Needless to say, I’m over the moon excited for everything puppy here.

we have an update on Cherry...she's found her forever home...

Good afternoon from the Briarwood.
As many of you know I didn't have a litter last year, but Grif did sire a wonderful litter in October with a female, Tulsi owned by Susan Marr from Long's Peak English Shepherds.

The breeding was a conservation cross to preserve some of the older lines for this wonderful breed. The pedigree's were great on paper and the puppies have turned out beautifully, so much so that I've decided to get one myself. There is one sable/white female available from this cross and she's just a delight.

I asked Susan to give me a bit of information on Tulsi, and the female pup named Cherry. I've included a bit on Grif as well.

Tulsi is from Mitchell, Cimarron, Schoeman, Wilson, Chesney lines on her sire’s side, and Bowman, Machmiller, and Parmely lines on her dam’s. She is a lean 48lb, athletic and agile. She has the best natural attentiveness, biddability, and recall of any dog I've owned, which is saying something, since her parents both were excellent in that regard. She is loyal, very athletic, and an amazing hiking companion. She's loving and cuddly with people she knows, but a bit reserved with strangers. She goes to work with me and is very friendly with my co-workers, but will bark at delivery drivers etc. She generally gets along well with other, non-aggressive dogs and LOVES puppies. She has a low prey drive and nurturing temperament like her sire. I have chickens and she can hang out in with the pen with them without any issue. She will briefly chase the bunnies in the yard, but calls off instantly. She is a stick-close-to-home dog, and on several occasions when she’s been, unintentionally, left out of the house and yard, she is waiting patiently to be let back in hours later. Her siblings from various litters have gone with great success to farm/ranch, family companion, and SAR homes.

Cherry is sweet and biddable, with beautiful eye contact, and is showing strong indications of having a bossy, rules-oriented temperament. She has a medium prey drive and is very interested in the chickens, but remains calm around them. Cherry was over 14lbs at 8 weeks, which is quite large for a female at this age. These guys are outside a good bit and get lots of exercise, so she's not chubby. ;) Her dam, Tulsi, is 48lb, but in terms of size, Cherry seems to take after her sire, Grif, as well as her grandsire and granddam (Bodie was a lean 65lb and Lucy was a lean 55lb.)

Grif is Schoeman and Red Bank. Temperament wise Grif weighs in at 65 pounds and has a farm boss temperament. He is active and very biddable. He's loving and good natured. He was born on an active farm in WI. He thinks it's his job to rid the yard anything that he deems doesn't belong... chipmunks, squirrels, and the like as well as keeping the cat in sight and in one place.. He doesn't do so well keeping the cat still, but he is persistent in trying. When not in the backyard patrolling, he's very happy to be cuddled up at my side on the sofa. He travels well and is protective but not overly so.
Cherry has Schoeman lines both top and bottom of her pedigree. Shoeman lines are hard to find and she's proving to be a wonderful representative of Mildred Shoeman's dogs.

If you think you might be interested in providing a home for Cherry, please PM me so I can get you in touch with Susan.
