"The reins should feel like silk in your hands. There should be a float in them. You should feel weightless.
See how little you can do.
Bring the horse to a walk without using the reins. It should be in your body.
See how slow and soft life can be without letting things die.
Now pick up a feel and speed your horses up. Don’t sit there like a gut shot bird.
Your legs are more important than your hands.
When I’m on a horse he becomes my body, feet and legs.
The reins are really hooked onto my feet and the horse is between my legs, arms, and hands.
Don’t brace in the stirrups or he’ll brace back...............and there’s usually a buck in that brace." - Ray Hunt

Thank you Shining P Productions for a great jackpot with over 50 runners!!
SH Fireinthefastlane (Fannie) won the jackpot by a couple tenths and the NH. I’m so thankful for this 🦄
Glory on the Run was 3rd with a broken chin strap so it was wild for our style but she still flies!
Juddy beat me in the futurity exhibition with the Juvenile, Snazzy Lil Dash. But FDD Diva is figuring things out and I can’t wait for 2025! Juddy’s Dinero worked great too exhibitioning.
Thank you Crowder Family for always providing the best experience to haul the c**ts and working with us!!

The crew and I had a great Mile Hi Barrel Horse Finals!
▶️ Glory on the Run wound up 3rd both Friday and Saturday out of a couple hundred runners each day 🥰just love that tough mare!

▶️SH Fireinthefastlane tried her heart out and won 5th the first day, with a few slips, also won the Novice Horse. The shoot out my goal was just to nail my first barrel and she did amazing with that, I decided to then not ride my best the rest but it worked she won the 2D shoot out and her first big check ❤️🦄

▶️Both of next years hopefuls did geat which makes it more exciting for the futurities next year!! Juddy was helpful as always and supportive and we even got to have some of Taislee with us which made it so fun!! Got to see some of my friends 🤟🏽
Thank you so much Mike Hi crew for a great Shoot Out and fun couple days!!!

All the puppies went to their new perfect homes and we were home Sunday to make it to church with my family which was my favorite!!

The Pink Buckle was good to us, SH Fireinthefastlane (Fannie) added over $2k to her LTE, with hopefully more to come by the time it’s said and done. She was in the 1d of the Futurity in the first round and made another solid run in the second round. I’m sure thankful for this mare and excited for her future.
We had such a great time and was spoiled with time with some of my most favorite humans which is just good for my soul. God is great and I’m sure counting my blessings 💖

I don’t know how many ways to say horse trainers don’t make any money… but horse trainers don’t make any money. 🤣

I think sometimes the clients do not understand this. Yes, you may write your horse trainer a check for $1200 or $1500 a month, but I assure you, once you figure out the costs, there is no money….

You have to:
➡️Feed the horse. (Hay/Grain)
➡️House the horse. (Whether you rent or you have a mortgage, there is cost here.)
➡️You have to physically feed the horse.
➡️Clean stalls
➡️Fill waters
➡️Turn out the horse and bring them in.
➡️Groom/bathe the horse.
➡️Maybe you have labor costs.
➡️You have to ride said horse.
➡️Likely you aren’t billing for all you should.

Let’s say you charge $1250 a month.
Let’s say you feed a bag a week at $20 bucks ($80)

8 bales of hay a month at $15 ($120) I feed way more than this; and to keep weight you need to. Clients don’t pay for you to buy in bulk to save money.

Clean stalls 2x day and clean or fill water everyday 15 min at $15 hr. ($225)

Shavings??? 🙃

That leaves you with $825 left over. Whether you own or rent; you need to factor that in, and if you ride every day, you have to pay yourself your time.

If you train horses you need:
➡️A facility (an average facility is usually around $2500+ a month to rent, but if you have a mortgage and run a business, you need to factor that in.)
➡️A truck ($50,000 truck is around $750 on average, most of us are driving $100,000 trucks.)
➡️A trailer. (Cheap would be $25,000)
➡️Saddles ($2,000 each)
➡️Bits ($100-$250 each)
➡️ Splint boots, girths, bridles, breastcollars, saddle pads, reins, training tack, etc.
➡️Tires, oil changes, fuel, wear and tear
All of these things wear out and need to be replaced.

I say all of this to tell you that as a trainer, we are greatly invested, sometimes YEARS, hoping that we either make money in the arena, or make money on the sale of the horse (commission.)

When your horse does poorly, I assure you, NONE OF US WANTED THAT. We are trying our best because we have endless hours invested in fluffy.

That being said, fluffy doesn’t always (let’s get real… RARELY) have/has the same plans we do.

Fluffy doesn’t know you invested $15k in training and he isn’t in the 1D.

Fluffy doesn’t know he won’t be good enough for your kid.

Fluffy likely doesn’t know he is a major pain in the a**.

Fluffy doesn’t know he is going to take 9 million man hours to make a Futurity horse.

So have some grace for your trainers. They are not paid enough to deal with your bulls*** too.

Training horses is a horrible business model. It’s based solely on what you can produce in a day and your client doesn’t want an intern training their horse. The more horses, the higher the overhead. There aren’t many trainers that are *making* money.

If you get hurt, who pays your bills?

This is not directed at anyone. Rather an industry wide thing I see ALL THE TIME!

Horses are a lot like 4th graders.

I know this because my wife, Bridget, is a school teacher, and over the years, I’ve gained a pretty good understanding of what it takes to make a great student-teacher relationship... and I’ve come to realize, in many ways, it’s not that much different from the horse-trainer relationship.

Horses, like students, may not always remember exactly what you taught them on a given day, but they remember how you made them feel.

They remember whether or not you encouraged them and made them feel confident about the things they have learned.

They remember if you took time to listen to them and to build a relationship with them.

They recognize our attitudes and behaviors, and they are easily influenced by the energy we put off—both positively and negatively.

Horses, like students, need space to make mistakes.

They don’t need to be micromanaged.

They don’t need to be harshly criticized when they get the wrong answer.

Instead, they need you to guide them in the right direction and be rewarded when they find the right answer.

Horses, like students, need us to take the time to help them develop their skills.

They need us to show patience and kindness.

They need us to have understanding and excellent communication.

They need us to be committed to their growth, no matter how slow or fast it may be.

Horses, like students, need us to understand that progress is not an overnight process, but rather a lifelong journey. And, while it may be a long journey, it sure is a rewarding one.
