Moving is a lot of work, but today reminded me why we chose this to be our new home :) Now that the fencing is secure and weeds have been cut back, we got to have our first socialization playdate today! I am so happy to see these pups enjoy the space so much, even in its rugged current state. We are going to do great things back here! I’m looking forward to incorporating guided small-group play sessions with more of my clients- so many dogs can benefit from training in a controlled environment with other trusted dogs. We practice sharing toys, respecting each others space, responding calmly to new people and animals, and being safe while chasing and wrestling. Can’t wait to get some agility equipment back here as well! Bringing your dogs to outdoor events like the wonderful Lincoln Roscoe Art + Craft Fair, is the absolute best! Here are my top tips for conditioning calm behavior in situations like this: 🐶 First, don’t give your dog more than they can handle. Penny and Julian’s relaxed faces and bodies showed me they were doing fine. If they were wide-eyed and tense, we would’ve practiced all of this from a much further distance where they could successfully relax. 🐶 Give yourself space. This prime spot was wide open and a perfect place for us to get comfy. I brought them to the table, sat and ate my Mac+pulled pork, and I kept their leashes relaxed so they could settle in in their own way. 🐶 High value rewards!! Now, I know that dogs should not eat sugary bbq sauce. So I did already have those pieces in my mouth the get the sauce off… (#dogmom) Definitely don’t feed your dogs random scraps! That being said, the pulled pork was a perfect treat for this situation because A.) it’s a novelty item that they’ll now associate this experience 👍🏻 and B.) I was asking a lot of them in this situation, and the more you ask for, the better you should reward! 🐶 Note that I brought the pork straight to their mouths in a moment they were behaving very well. If they were anxious or clamoring up to the food, I’d have stopped and waited for them to chill out again. You want to encourage the calm behavior to continue, so make sure to capture the calm moments! 🐶 Be calm yourself. Set an example of the vibe you want your dog to have. I intentionally take big calm breaths, shoulder/neck rolls, and even yawn or close my eyes slightly so that dogs will know that I feel good about this situation and they shouldn’t worry either. 🐶 End on a high note. Don’t push it. If you wait until your dogs get overwhelmed, they’ll remember that. Better to leave while they’re still thinking “I would’ve stayed longer for the easy pulled pork!” They’ll be really h

Yes, please 🥰 I know so many folks struggle to find JOY and PEACE when they walk their dogs, or it’s peaceful only if there aren’t other dogs, other people, kids, scooters, etc. Let me help you teach your dog to ignore these stimuli and stay focused on your walk TOGETHER! Most owners only need a few small adjustments to make their walks infinitely better. A bag of good dog food is about $80. Julian was the best little assistant today at @theaterwit 💕🙏🏻 🎭🐶 He was absolutely bamboozled seeing this catwalk for the first time and he totally froze 😂 Here’s how I trained him to walk across with me! 1. I put his leash on. 2. I guided him upstairs and started walking across the catwalk with him behind me. He freezes at the sight of this! 3. I give a tug on the leash to urge him forward. He hesitantly sets one foot forward. treat! We walk back off the catwalk :) phew! 4. I head again over the catwalk with him behind me. I stop to reach my hand back towards him with treats. He needed to take two steps to reach them. He did! We walk back off the catwalk :) phew!! 5. Again we go. I head over the catwalk enthusiastically with Julian behind me. He sets all four paws onto it! Treat :) We keep going across! He freezes momentarily and I tug lightly on the leash again- retreat is not an option! I encourage him- “let’s go, Julian!” I walk to the end of the catwalk and offer more treats for a full cross. He goes for it! Success! 6. When we’re ready to go back over, I say “let’s go!” and lead him halfway. treat! We proceed all the way over :) More treats at the other end :) he was hesitant, but he knew what he had to do! After that, he’s been getting a treat after a full cross and he’s happy with that. Sometimes just feeling proud of yourself is a pretty nice reward. 😊 Every dog is different and I would’ve have used a different approach for another dog. Julian is a little teenager and he’s curious, easygoing, and he can be wary. I knew that will some joy and encouragement (and treats), and not a lot of pressure, he’d succeed. Now we can run all kinds of errands together! My brave boy! <3 This was also a #soloadventure for Julian- no big sister, Penny! 💔 He prefers to have her around and he usually does, but it’s It’s important for him to gain social experiences on his own so that he doesn’t develop dependency
