Reward your pets!
Let's talk treats.
As a dog trainer, one of the most common questions I get asked is, "When can I stop using treats with my dog?" I completely understand! It wan be so inconvenient for us to carry treats with us wherever we go with our dog. We have a lot going on in our lives, and the last thing we want to think about is, "Did we remember the treats for Fido?"
Just how we should get paid for going to work every day, dogs should get paid (in yummy treats) for their jobs too! If you show up to work one day and your boss decides to not pay you because you should be doing your work anyway, would you still work for that boss? Of course not! We want to get paid for the good work we do!!
When your child gets a good grade on their math test or picks up all of their toys when you ask them the first time, don't you want to reward them?
Let's face it. When we get a job, the first question we ask ourselves is, "What's in this for me?" Just like us, this is the first question your dog asks himself too.
Dogs do what works! If your dog is jumping on you when you get home from work and gets hugs and kisses, then he is being rewarded and will continue jumping on you and others. If your dog gets a treat and pets every time you ask him to sit, he will continue to sit!
When a good behavior is built, you do not always need treats, but shouldn't we want to reward our dogs for their good behavior?
Let's normalize rewarding our pets!
Arlo is making great strides with his walking training! He has come a long way. Arlo used to pull his owners down the street, making his walks very difficult!
A switch of equipment from a pinch collar to a harness coupled with loose leash walking training have made walks more enjoyable for Arlo and his family!
If you or someone you know want more enjoyable walks with your pup, email [email protected] to set up a consultation today!
