Final Farewell

Final Farewell A community of compassionate animal lovers who want to participate in ash-scattering ceremonies of animals who did not make it out of shelters alive.
(9)

Final Farewell is a growing group of compassionate animal advocates who wish to ensure that the animals that do not make it out of shelters are never forgotten and that their memory is honored. Our objective is to help people nationwide realize, via compassionate ash-scattering ceremonies and the ability to participate in these ceremonies, that there is a large issue, right in our own country, in

our own cities, towns and villages. Our local shelters are overcrowded and have no option but to “euthanize” when full. This overcrowding is due to animals not being fixed, animals being bred for money through either individuals, backyard breeders, or via puppy mills (sold online and via pet stores), and animals being treated as property and discarded at local animal control facilities because there are not stringent enough laws to protect these animals. By having ceremonial ash scatterings, we wish to honor the animals that have lost their lives, and we hope to and raise awareness to the problems we have at our local shelters, so that together we can honor these animals, and together we can help ensure more people become involved in process of helping our shelter animals! You can get involved and participate in ash-scattering ceremonies. Please contact us at [email protected]. Beyond helping us with being able to honor the lives of those who did not make it out of our local shelters via our ash-scattering ceremonies, all other proceeds will help towards our goal of education and solutions to overpopulation and euthanasia. This includes extending donations to existing rescues, enabling them to continue their work and to help more shelter animals. As a note, ALL members of Final Farewell work ONLY on a volunteer basis, NONE of the money raised goes towards a salary, travel, etc.… all money goes to benefit the animals. Any and all work is done completely from the heart on a volunteer basis.

Meet Brownie and Elmo. Brownie was rescued off the streets of LA and sent to a rescue in Michigan. He was later found abandoned in a motel with Elmo. Neither one of the previous rescues were able to help these sweet boys so they came to us.

BROWNIE is about 7 years old and vetted. He is good with cats and dogs. He is very sweet and loves to sit next to you while you pet him.

Elmo is a young boy about 3 years old and vetted. He is very sweet and simply a good boy. He is also good with cats and dogs.

Thank you ABRA rescue for taking these boys into your rescue to help find them the home they deserve. Please share Brownie and Elmo. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Look at this handsome boy!

Bruce Wayne was rescued when his family left him outside and didn't want him anymore. Their loss is our gain. He waited patiently for a rescue and waited until his angels from ABRA rescue came along.

Thank you Amy Lynn with ABRA for never saying NO. He is with an awesome foster waiting for his new home. Please share BW so he can find the perfect home he deserves.

Look at this doodlebug! Our handsome Bruce Wayne, aka Batdog, aka BW, aka B Dub, is still waiting for his forever family. BW is just a doll. He's around 2 years old, is fostered with multiple other dogs, loves people, crate-trained, house-trained, he's just the greatest boy!

BW is not good with cats, and he's not comfortable with little kids. He's just not comfortable with them. He avoids them (will put himself into his crate or go to another room if a child is around). He'd be perfect for a home with no little humans.

He's been waiting for a long time, and he's such a lovebug. If you'd like to add Bruce to your family, please visit abraangels.com for an application!

Missing Curtis one year later……..

A year ago today we lost our best friend, the most amazing animal advocate and someone with a heart of gold for both humans and animals. His kindness and generosity had no limits.

It has been a difficult year for us without him both in rescue and as a friend. His support and willingness to help any animal in need has been a huge loss for our Final Farewell family. The loss of his friendship has been unbearable.

For reasons we will never understand, he was taken from us too soon. The most painful goodbyes are the ones that are never said. They say there is a reason for everything and that time heals but neither reason nor time has helped us heal.

Curtis was loved so dearly and will be missed beyond what words can measure. He will always have a special place in our hearts and he has left behind so many memories to treasure.

Until we meet again, you will always be in our hearts. Our loss here on earth is heaven’s gain.

Hello! My name is Sugar. I'm 17 years old, fully vetted and front paw declawed. My mom was leaving for Japan and she took me to the vet to put me down because I had nowhere to go after she left. I had a guardian angel at the vets when a heart of gold vet tech saved my life. She contacted Final Farewell to help and now I am safe. I need a foster home or someone to give me a home I can spend my retirement days with. I'm very good and would be very grateful for a kind home. Please contact Final Farewell to help me.

TOBY FINDS A SPECIAL HOME!!

Poor Toby was found wondering around alone in Southern Illinois. He was weak, could barely stand, lost his hair from malnutrition and had a severe URI. Toby’s time was running out because of the seriousness of his condition and the fact that no one stepped up to help this poor boy. The shelter reached out to BAARK rescue and they immediately agreed to help. Toby’s journey began and prayers were needed for him to survive the long trip up to Chicago.
Once in our care, Toby was immediately taken to the clinic and Dr. Mirabella provided the best care for Toby. While recovering in his foster home, Toby had an angel following his story. A wonderful nurse, Beth Young, stepped up and wanted to adopt this sweet boy. Once Toby was better he made his way to his forever home. Today Toby’s days are filled with lots of love and good health. Thank you Beth for giving Toby a chance at a good life.

Please share Alley. She is deserving of a good home.

Alley would love a new home!!!!

Alley is up for adoption thru Final Farewell, Last Chance Rescue (Chicago, IL) and she about 6 years old (a guess). She was brought in as a stray to Chicago Animal Care & Control. She was skin and bones, had an upper respiratory infection, and a case of un-medicated diabetes. She had been wandering the streets alone, with no food, no medicine, and no love.

Now she has blossomed with her foster mom. At first, what she wanted most was love. And then to play! Strings and interactive toys are her favorite. Then food... which as it turns out, is her favorite. She even eats foster moms finger sometimes... and broccoli... and mashed potatoes. She’s very cuddly with humans.

She tolerates dogs and it only took her a few days to get used to the resident dog without hissing at her. I suspect if she lived with an overly energetic dog or one that messed with her, she would not be happy.

Alley likes to play with other friendly cats. If the other cats are territorial, she will defend herself but she has never been claws out. She is not typically the aggressor. She is very relaxed, but sometimes she’ll let out a little growl to let the territorial cat to leave her alone. She doesn’t mind loud noises and is super laid back.

In foster, Alley has put weight back on her bones, and her diabetes has become easily managed! She’s healthy and happy and is looking for a forever home, where she can relax and have a mom or dad who’ll keep her on her regular schedule. And where she can put her little wet nose to your face forever and forever.
Here is a great video her foster mom put together. https://drive.google.com/open?id=10MgyINk54enILB98F0w6C1sR-9-OcCsi

If Alley sounds like your kind of cat, please email Alley’s foster mom at [email protected]

Albert is still available!!

Albert was one of Curtis’s foster dogs. Curtis spent hours roaming around Englewood and rescued this sweet boy. Albert had rough beginnings, but because of Curtis he was given a second chance. Curtis saw great potential in Albert, and thought he would be a great therapy dog once he got a bit older. Though in a loving foster, thanks to ABRA, he still needs a permanent home. Albert is around 1 year old, 39 lbs, and is housebroken. He gets along great with other dogs and even cats. He can get a little playful with cats, so they would need to be dog friendly. Albert LOVES people. He is super affectionate and thrives on being around people. That being said, he is looking for a family that understands his need for attention. We would recommend only a home with older children, because Albert still likes to jump and “hug” people. Albert is still a puppy and working on his manners. He does know how to sit. We would recommend Albert get more training to reach his full potential. With Albert’s sweet heart and affection, Final Farewell knew we rescued a very special boy who had the potential to do so much and give so much love. Please contact abraangels.com to fill out an application.

Famous Fido Rescue No Kill Advocacy Wellness & Learning Center

PLEASE SHARE OLLIE. He is adorable and would love a family of his own.

Ollie is an adorable yet hand-shy, 18-month-old, 20-pound, male fawn terrier-mix looking for a loving guardian. Ollie was rescued from Chicago Animal Care and Control by Famous Fido Rescue. He is extremely active and playful. He loves to play ball. But, due to his unknown past, he will snap if he is fearful. For that reason, he is best with adults and not children.

Ollie is taking part in positive reinforcement training at the shelter and already knows the command sit. He looks forward to learning more in his new home. He is healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, heartworm-tested, and micro-chipped.

To meet and possibly adopt Ollie, please fill in the online adoption application and follow up by contacting Gloria at [email protected] or 773-907-0305. Please call or e-mail for an appointment to meet him and all the other wonderful cats and dogs. His adoption fee of $250 benefits the rescued pets of Famous Fido’s.

FOSTER NEEDED!!!!! PLEASE SHARE!!!

This sweet girl was rescued by Curtis and needs to be re-homed.

This is Zaskia, or as she was known with us, Shelby. She was adopted last July (she was a south Chicago rescue that we partnered on with Final Farewell and Curtis Scott. What I wouldn't give to talk to Curtis right now :( )

Anyway, Shelby is not getting along with the female dog in her home and is being returned. We need a foster home for her ASAP. She is young, closing in on 1.5 years old. She is very good with her family, including the little boy, but she is skittish/leery of strangers. She has a lot of energy and enjoys playing. She is housebroken, crate trained and fully vetted.

If you are interested in Shelby, please contact us at [email protected]

Please share!

PLEASE KEEP SHARING!!!!

Mr. Bruce Wayne is still in need of a foster. He is very sweet, LOVES to cuddle and needs a cat free home. Please if you can't foster then please share. He has had a hard life. He is missing all his top teeth and I'm positive it is not due to a dental work up he had from a vet. You can fill out a foster application at allbreedrescueinc.com or contact me at [email protected].

FOSTERS NEEDED!!! PLEASE SHARE!!!

Gerda, Aina and Adelola are sitting at Chicago's Kill shelter as EXTREMELY URGENT. They are URGENT because they are FELV positive. This is a death sentence for cats in shelters. We don't want them to be another statistic. PLEASE if you have any room for even one it will help. We want to retest them and just need temp housing for them until this is complete. FELV can only be transmitted between cats. They need to be around cats that are FELV or be only cats. They don't deserve to die. If you can help or have any questions, please contact [email protected].

FOSTER NEEDED URGENTLY!!

We need a foster for Bruce Wayne before his time runs out. His story is sad like so many others.

PLEASE READ AND SHARE TO SAVE HIS LIFE:

Animal Control was called about a dog roaming the streets and they came to pick up Bruce Wayne. He ran onto a porch and the owners of the home said that they had re-homed him and didn’t want him. Poor loyal Bruce made his way back to his original home hoping to be with his undeserving family. When Bruce made his way back, they left him outside to roam alone and to continue to hope that his family would finally open the door for him. Instead when Animal Control came, they helped put Bruce into the van not caring the heart break they were causing him.

He is a very handsome boy and deserves a family that will appreciate his loyalty. The volunteers mention on his profile that he is polite, likes treats and scratches. Bruce deserves to be in a home where he can be loved forever. He needs out before his time is up.

Please share for a foster or an adopter. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.

RIP Jinx

What went wrong….

Jinx was brought into Chicago’s kill shelter on 09/25/2017 by someone who found him in their yard. A little over a month later, Jinx was dead. He was described as nice, calm and in pretty good shape. His intake was noted as normal. A few days later Jinx developed loose stool which progressed to “large amounts of diarrhea in his cage” even with treatment. He soon developed an URI. While suffering with the diarrhea and the URI, Jinx was neutered. Sadly, that was the wrong decision to make. It was at that time that it was discovered that he was FELV positive. A death sentence for cats in shelters.

Jinx’s medical records indicate he developed conjunctivitis soon after his netuer and per the records “unable to apply eye meds-unable to restrain”. This comes as a surprise since he was the sweetest cat and once at the clinic NO ONE had a problem handling him. While his declining condition continued to progress a healthy picture of Jinx remained. Jinx continued to decline in his cage as if he was just forgotten. What happened? BAARK was notified of Jinx being FELV positive and immediately placed a hold. Jinx was transferred to our clinic and his appearance and his condition was shocking and heartbreaking. Jinx had blood on his nose and back leg. He was so skinny and weak that I was not sure we had the right cat. Treatment was started immediately with no problem. Jinx knew he was in a kind and loving place now. He developed seizures the following day but the medical team was able to stabilize him. Anemia was noted and a blood transfusion was completed. We hoped for the best but faith had other plans for Jinx. He passed soon after the infusion surrounded by a group of people who fought hard for him. We are all saddened by what he must have endured over the past month at the shelter. Thank you Dr. Mirabella for all your efforts to save Jinx and Karla for all your daily updates.

RIP Jinx. You were loved!

Maddie’s story started out as a sad one. We will share it with you now. This was written by a volunteer at CACC who saw Maddie and recognized the beautiful soul within her broken body. Maddie literally had no hope without Curtis. He agreed to come evaluate her, and took her home almost 3 years ago. Thank goodness the volunteers who took her under their wing knew him, and knew Maddie was just the sort of dog he fought for.

Here is her story:

“I first met Madeline on October 8th after I received a request from a woman who has fostered several dogs from cacc. She said "guess she's so scared they can't get her out of the cage". I went into pavilion G where she is being kept (this pavilion is usually reserved for cruelty cases and dogs that have 72 hours before being euthanized). At first I didn't see her; she is a tiny thing and was plastered up against the back of the concrete wall. I knelt down in front of her cage and started speaking to her in a soft voice. She was shaking and urinated on herself. She tried to back up even more, even though there was no place left to go. I had some raw food and started putting it into her cage. She would not come to me. I went to open her cage door and she immediately ran to the other side of her cage and sat there shaking. I gently pulled the cage divider so she couldn't move back to the other side and sat there for another 15-20 minutes speaking to her. I finally opened the cage door and went to put the slip lead on her. She backed up and was just on her 2 hind legs. She growled and tried to bite the leash. I stopped trying with the leash and decided to just let her eat some food. After another 15 or so minutes, she would grab the food, watching me the whole time.

I walked out of pavilion G crying. I thought to myself "who's going to want this dog? Who will spend the time with her that she needs in order to get her out? She'll die here". I asked one of the people who works with the cruelty cases what her story was and was told that she came in with four other dogs from a horrendous situation. Neighbors had been complaining about the stench coming from this home. The police went out to investigate and had to call in the fire department to get into the home. The man who lived there is severely mentally unstable and a hoarder. Apparently when he answered the door he had no idea if he was wearing clothing or not. The house was filled with junk, urine, f***s and what appeared to be dog fighting paraphernalia in the basement. The dogs were huddled together in the dark. It appeared that they had never gone outside. None of them would come to the officers, so cacc had to come in with catch poles and pull the dogs out.

All five dogs were frightened and not trusting of anyone. None of them knew how to walk on a leash and would "pancake" when anyone came over to their cages. After a little bit of time all of the dogs, with the exception of Madeline, got accepted into the Safe Humane Court Case Dog Program, which meant that the dogs would be safe until transferred to a suitable rescue. They would all be able to get walked and socialized, making it easier to place them with rescues and eventually onto homes. In order to make it into this program, the dog needs to be able to be walked (meaning they have to be able to have a leash put on them). Madeline was declined for the program because no one was able to leash her.

I contacted a good friend of mine…and asked her if she would help me get Madeline out. We spent over an hour trying to gain Madeline's trust. She would eat out of our hands, come over and sniff us, but would not allow us to put a leash on her. A person that works for Safe Humane got her out of her cage but reported to our animal placement coordinator and deputy director that Madeline "not be allowed to leave the building" because she was untrustworthy and a bite risk.

I was told a day after this happened that the dog I was working with was dangerous and that it was not likely I could help her. I felt like the wind was knocked out of me. I remember calling Kelly, crying, telling her that we couldn't allow this to happen. We both knew there was a dog inside there that wanted to come out. The trauma she went through must have been unbearable. I knew the time is was going to take was time she, and cacc, did not have.

After much coaxing, soothing words, and treats we got a leash on her. Her reaction was like none I had seen - spinning, flipping, jumping. We let her do what she needed to do and she eventually calmed down. And that was even before we got out of the pavilion. The next step was getting her outside and walking on the leash. We eventually got her out but she did not want to move. She was shaking and terrified. I decided I was going to pick her up and hold her. The look she gave me was pure fear but I wanted her to know what it felt like to have someone that cared touch her. I held her in my arms, rocking her and sang "You are my Sunshine" over and over to her. She eventually stopped shaking and rested her head on my shoulder. No words could ever describe how that made me feel. I will remember that moment forever.

I have worked with Madeline every single time I'm at cacc - three times a week, at least an hour each time. Every day she's gotten a little bit better. She recognizes my voice now and she wags her tail when she sees me. My heart melts every single time. I can now put a leash on her without her panicking. Whenever she gets frightened or nervous, she puts her paws on me and wants to be held.

I am just one person. I am not a rescue. She needs to get out of cacc if she is going to continue to improve and live a "normal" existence. What I want most for her is to know what a real home is and what it means to not be afraid, to not shake when someone touches you. Kelly and I reached out to an amazing trainer by the name of Curtis Scott.”

We know everyone has been waiting for an update on Curtis’s dogs, and honestly, most days so are we. When Curtis first passed away, we were under the impression his four personal dogs (in addition to three foster dogs) would need to be rehomed. We were incredibly relieved when we learned that Curtis’s wife intended to keep their personal dogs.
Eleanor and Bruno, two of the foster dogs, have been adopted and are in wonderful homes. Albert, the final foster dog, is still awaiting his forever family, but is in an excellent foster home until then.
As for Curtis’s personal dogs, they were moved to Pack Life, a cage-free boarding and daycare facility. They were to be housed there until their ‘mom’ was ready to take them home. Gretchen, Brawny and Mischa are all older dogs, and Maddie is a middle-aged gal. Maddie was always separated from the rest of the pack, Curtis always made sure she had her own space away from the other dogs.
Obviously the story takes a turn, as Curtis is no longer with us. When his pack was moved to the facility, it was made clear that Maddie should be kept separate from the other dogs. Soon after getting to Pack Life, Maddie was put out in the daycare with all the other dogs. Not just Curtis’s three, but ALL of the dogs in daycare. She went from always having her own space to being one of dozens. While we were concerned, we were told she was doing great and having a ball playing with the other dogs.
Weeks went by and still the dogs remained at the facility. There is renovation being done to Curtis’s house and so the dogs were on an extended stay. We had offered to place the dogs in temporary foster homes, as seniors would probably enjoy being in a home and a less chaotic environment, but every time we were assured the dogs were fine staying at the facility.
You can imagine our shock when one morning we received a text that Maddie had bitten the owner of Pack Life when he was trying to break up a dog fight and he recommended she be euthanized. We were asked to recommend a vet for euthanasia since their vet wasn’t available, unless we could find a place for her to go. There was no way we were going to let her be put to sleep.
We found Maddie a place to go and made arrangements to get her transported. When our volunteer picked Maddie up from the facility, he was told Maddie was sweet with people, “psycho” with other dogs, and that she was NOT the dog responsible for the bites. Honestly, at this point, we aren’t sure what went down but we can tell you since we’ve picked her up, we have not witnessed any sign of aggression. On the contrary, she is absolutely a doll. Still so timid and scared, but once you get past that, she’s an absolute love muffin. You can see the smile on her face.

Cindy at Animal House Sanctuary took Maddie in without question. It was not until after Maddie was there and settled in that we let her know Maddie came with a donation. A portion of the money donated for Curtis’s dogs was sent to be spent on Maddie’s care. If someday the right person comes along and wants to adopt Maddie, that will be great. If not, we know she will be cared for and loved for the rest of her natural life at the sanctuary. It has been a pleasure to see her flourish and happy since arriving there.
As far as Gretchen, Brawny and Mischa, they remain at Pack Life. It’s our understanding that once the renovations are complete, they’ll be going home.

CECILIA NEEDS OUR HELP! PLEASE DONATE OR SHARE!

Cecilia was found on the streets without the use of her back legs trying to survive alone at only 12 weeks old. She was taken to Chicago's kill shelter and sat there waiting for a miracle. Animals with disabilities are often over looked and she waited for her hero to come save her. Cecilia was chipped and her owners were contacted. They were told of her injuries and said they would come but they never came for poor Cecilia. How do you do that to your animal? These are the dangers you put your cats at risk for when you allow them to be indoor/outdoor cats. Poor Cecilia was injured badly and has no use of her back legs.

Cecilia's lucky day began when she caught the eye of Susan Diane. Susan spent all day emailing rescues for help and only Sandra Boston with BAARK stepped up to save this girl. Cecilia was taken immediately to an Orthopedic surgeon for a miracle. Susan wanted Cecilia as is and now Cecilia has a new mom who will never let her go.

GOOD NEWS! The doctor plans on doing surgery on Monday to try and fix Cecilia's back legs. There is a good chance she will be able to walk.

PLEASE help with a donation or simply by sharing. Cecilia deserves to live a happy life.

PLEASE DONATE ANY AMOUNT IF YOU CAN. PLEASE KEEP SHARING HER STORY.

PLEASE SHARE!!!! SOLDIER DESPERATELY NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!

Life has never been easy for Soldier. We first met Soldier when he was at Chicago Animal Care and Control. He was on the urgent list and was going to be euthanized. Curtis went to evaluated Soldier and determined that fear was shutting this good boy down and that he needed out fast. Soldier soon came into Final Farewell’s program. He came out of CACC and had to go straight to the clinic. He was sick with the flu and almost died. Our Soldier was able to pull through and is a Survivor. He has defeated death’s door twice, but now faces another challenge.

Soldier was adopted and because he was not getting along with the house cat, he had to leave. Now! Tonight! Thank you Sandra Sandra Amador and Appi Preusen for sharing our story. Linda Cirone you are his hero for letting him stay with you until we are able to get him to the vet. Thank you Emily Meister and Jake for a last minute call to transport Soldier to his foster.

Soldier is in desperate need of a long-term foster or permanent home. Soldier is heartbroken and confused. He was removed so quickly from the home he knew and doesn’t understand why he was taken away from his family. This poor boy has been through so much and is such a GOOD BOY. He gets along great with other dogs and children. He is house-broken.

Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] if you are able to foster or adopt. If you are unable, please share!!!
