We are thrilled to announce our new Chief of Staff at our booming animal hospital, West Asheville Family Vet, Dr. Kristina Hubbard! Dr. Hubbard is excited to be in Asheville with access to farmer's markets, great restaurants, and amazing outdoor activities after her isolation in the Arctic. In her free time she enjoys hiking, biking, gardening, reading, woodworking, and fiber arts. She provides rent-free accommodations to Murgatroyd (a one-eyed, grumpy old man cat), Berlioz (a three-legged orange tabby), Mannheim (a Mississippi foster failure kitten), and Silent (a very mixed breed dog from Alaska's North Slope).

Dr. Kristina Hubbard grew up in rural Nebraska with a menagerie of pets ranging from mudpuppy salamanders from the local bait shop to a sassy doe rabbit won at the county fair (even though animals shouldn't be prizes!). She completed an animal science bachelor's degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and finished veterinary school at Iowa State University.

After a few years as a small animal veterinarian in South Dakota, Dr. Hubbard headed south to Mississippi State University for a three year residency in population medicine where she became a board certified veterinary epidemiologist and completed her master's degree. She loved teaching veterinary students surgery and on-site disease outbreak investigations on everything from nutrition disorders in cattle herds to virus outbreaks in animal shelters. Following her residency, she spent the last four years in Utqiagvik/Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States on the shore of the Arctic Ocean with 67 days of continuous darkness during the winter months and temperatures down to -72F. During her stay she helped with the Iditarod sled dog race, visited rural Alaska communities to provide veterinary services, and had amazing wildlife neighbors including polar bears, caribou, whales, and snowy owls, making for an unforgettable experience.

Our creative veterinary team at our Orlando hospital disguised their scale as a sandy beach to better accommodate their patients in a "Fear Free" setting. Getting pets on the scale can be one of the most anxious moments during their visit but for these pets, it's just a day at the beach. Great idea, Avalon Family Vet.

We’d like to welcome Dr. Katie Bucy to the Family! Dr. Bucy is joining our animal hospital in Morganton, NC, Healthy Petz Family Vet.

Dr. Katie Bucy has always been passionate about animals and they have always been a part of my life. She's enjoyed working with many species in her career and can often be found with an animal of some kind by my side. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech in 2006, a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University in 2015. She has always related easier with animals than people and loves working with them. Dr. Bucy enjoys the puzzle aspect of finding out what is wrong with them and seeing them flourish. She says the most rewarding aspect of veterinary medicine is where you can follow along with an animal throughout their whole life and become a friend to the pets that they enjoy coming to and seeing. Outside of the office, she can be found working with her horses or out exploring nature with my dogs. She also enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time with friends. Welcome to the team, Dr. B!

We would like to welcome Dr. Melissa Hawkins to our growing team of veterinarians at Family Vet Group. She joins our Asheville, NC clinic, Redwood Family Vet.

Dr. Melissa Hawkins is a 2005 graduate of MSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Medical Center. Her love of animals was apparent as a child, when she started training dogs with 4H. Her interest grew, and after going with her father to visit the vet with one of their injured dogs, she knew she wanted to be a veterinarian.

Since graduation, her career has taken her to practice in Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana, and now Asheville, NC. She has experience in both small animal general medicine as well as emergency medicine. She truly loves being a veterinarian, and finds joy in fostering the bond between pets and their people.

When she's not at work, you can usually find Dr. Hawkins enjoying the Blue Ridge Mountains on foot or by mountain bike with her husband, Nate, and their border terrier, Mac. The 3 of them are supervised at home by their 2 cats, Spooky and Stitch
