Most feeders have small, contained areas that force the pet’s food into a large pile or heap. This serving approach actually holds your pet’s food hostage.

Why? Your dog and cat see the world through their noses given it is their strongest sense and dominates in their evaluation of food. When their food is served in contained piles, it inhibits their nose to identify what food is in their menu and to select the foods they want to eat in a particular order—yes, they do have food preferences. If they’re not allowed to engage in sniffing their meal, they have no other option but to ‘gulp’ down the pile in front of them.

Have you ever taken a moment to watch your pet eat their meal after you serve them?
Does it look like they’re enjoying meal or do they seem frustrated?
Can your pet freely explore their food or are they forced to eat what’s piled in front of them? Are they relaxed while eating or tense?
Are they consuming food at a reasonable amount and pace or are they inhaling too quickly?
Are they able to retrieve food easily or are they struggling to reach it?
Does it look like a positive and enriching experience or one that is punitive and negative? Do they seem satisfied after eating or somehow less than content?
