What Makes a Good Home for a Kitten😺?

This is a great ❓ and one every breeder appreciates hearing. It shows us that the families adopting our fur babies are serious about caring for their companions. Pets are living beings which will mean some adaptations within your home will be necessary.

In general, however, the 5 following qualities are things we hope to see in the homes of all of our fluffikin families.

1) Attention–all pets need attention.👀 Whether it is noticing that the water bowl might need refilled to recognizing that the kitten is acting “off”, all pets require constant attention to gauge their well-being. Giving your new kitten attention can also include being patient with he or she as you both figure out what life will be like with a new family member. There is always an adjustment period. The best way to work through the adjustment period is to be attentive to your new pets cues. If you don’t have time to be present and attentive with your kitten than we would respectfully suggest you reevaluate whether getting a pet in this season of life is right for you.

2) Affection–kittens, especially ragdolls which are known for their emotional sensitivity, crave affection from their humans.🥰 Affection may come in the form of cuddling, playing, petting, or just being near you. A well socialized ragdoll will seek out the attention of his or her family on a daily basis. If you are not in a position to give constant affection to your fluffikin, we would suggest considering a different breed or evaluating if this is the right season for you to have a pet.

3) Respect–This one may sound a little weird, but it is important to remember. Your adorable, fluffy ragdoll is not an accessory for your lifestyle or a humanbeing. Any person who works with animals understands that the needs of an animal will be somewhat different than that of a human. Pet owners often project human emotions onto their pets which does not lead them to make the best decisions for their cat. It is necessary to maintain a degree of respect for our pets by recognizing that their needs and wants are very different than what our human feelings may tell us they need or want. Make educated decisions for your pet based on research.

4) Sacrifice–Pets require sacrifices.💸 The sacrifices you will need to make will involve money, resources, space in your house, travel, and time. If you do not have the bandwidth to be able to make these sacrifices, we would suggest waiting to bring in a pet.

5) Safety–This one may be a little redundant but it is worth mentioning more than once. Owning a kitten will require you to look around the house to see what potential disasters your kitten could get into.🆘 Things to be on the lookout for:
plants, chemicals, foods, essential oils, electric cords, small crevices, small toys that can be ingested, doors that do not latch all the way, cupboards or washer/dryers that can be opened, medications, pest poisoning, etc….
Do research about how to “kitten proof” your home or ask your vet or breeder.
