FIP is almost always a death sentence—unless cats receive immediate treatment with GS-441524 or Molnupiravir. These are my first choices for treatment, but these drugs are expensive, often hard to access, and in many countries, not legal. That means desperate cat parents are often forced to turn to underground black markets. (And it’s hard for doctors to recommend buying medications on the black market…risky).
So where’s the global effort to make life-saving care accessible and affordable—for every cat, everywhere?
Why aren’t more clinical studies focused on shelter outbreaks and the needs of homeless cats—those least likely to receive top-tier care? What if you don’t live in the “right” country, or don’t have the means to pay? Currently, the options are elitist medicine; if you can afford to save your cats life, you can. But what about everyone else??
That’s the conversation in my latest article. It’s time we talk about a global Plan B: repurposed drugs, new protocols, and the importance of staying curious—because when the alternative is death, what’s the harm in asking, “What else might work?”
As a veterinarian, I’ll keep asking that question for the rest of my life. I’ll stay open to conversations that lead to better protocols and never stop searching for solutions that help more animals—no matter how unconventional.
Some veterinarians and pharmaceutical companies may criticize me for it.
That’s okay. I’m not here to make them comfortable—I’m here to make a difference.
