The Anti-Cruelty veterinary team has been made aware of a dog who tested positive for rabies in Chicago. The affected dog has no connection to Anti-Cruelty. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued a public health notice to make the community aware of the situation.

This is a crucial reminder of the importance of vaccinating pets against rabies and other communicable diseases to protect the health of people, pets, and the Chicagoland community. Anti-Cruelty partners with Cook County to make vaccines, like rabies, accessible to all. If your pet is not currently up-to-date on vaccinations, contact your veterinarian, or view upcoming vaccine clinics on the Cook County website.

Meet Mattie the ferret. Yes—a ferret 🦦✨

Mattie recently made a brief (but very important) pit stop at Anti-Cruelty. As an Open Door shelter, we welcome animals of all kinds—no matter their species, age, health, behavior, or background. Dogs? Cats? Absolutely. Ferrets with big personalities and even bigger curiosity? You bet.

His stay was short, sweet, and full of wiggles—just long enough for us to provide care, safety, and support before Mattie moved on to one of our trusted rescue partners to continue his journey.

Because whether you bark, meow, squeak, or do that iconic ferret bounce… we welcome all. 💙🐾

He loves to zoom around the house, perform binkies that show off his playful side, and spend quiet moments judging the world from the window. A fan of all kinds of veggies, he’s both lively and affectionate, bringing a perfect mix of fun and calm to any home... but a little chaos is always guaranteed. 😉

Home for the Holidays is in full swing!

From now through the end of the year, all adoption fees are waived for every animal. Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and small animals. Including Nova, the puppy pictured here, small, festive, and fully prepared to become your favorite part of the season.

No fees. Just a new best friend and a lot of holiday memories waiting to happen.

The cheerful Christmas props in this photo were made by our volunteers from Crafting for Critters, an all-ages program that combines creativity and care to brighten the holidays for our animals and our community.

Home for the Holidays runs through December 31. Nova is ready when you are.

Meet Sparky & Gracie 💛

Sparky is a hospice adoption, and his greatest comfort is Gracie. These two seniors have spent their lives together and are deeply bonded. Where one goes, the other follows. Sparky is facing liver disease and doesn’t have much time, but what he does have is love, gentleness, and an unwavering best friend by his side.

Gracie may be tiny and a little timid, but she’s Sparky’s anchor. She watches him closely, helps him feel safe, and won’t let him face anything alone. In return, Sparky gives her confidence, calm, and constant companionship.

They are looking for a peaceful, loving home to spend their remaining time together—snuggling, being adored, and staying exactly where they belong: side by side.
