Hands of Artemis Gecko Rescue

Hands of Artemis Gecko Rescue 🦎 Gecko. Rescue. Repeat. 🦎
We're a Chicago family-operated reptile rescue specializing in geckos. Find more information here: https://www.wildlifeillinois.org/

Chicagoland's only reptile rescue specializing in New Caledonian geckos. While most of our focus is on geckos, we occasionally accept other reptiles on a case-by-case basis. We are based in Chicago, IL but take in surrenders from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. We aim to provide proper husbandry education, so reptiles can find their forever homes and owners can be confident in their care. We do

not take monitors, snakes, arachnids, turtles, or wild animals. USARK Keepers Code of Ethics: https://usark.org/keepers-code-of-ethics/

Reptiles and amphibians are protected by law in Illinois. Killing or collecting these animals on public land in Illinois without a permit is illegal.

Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are enormously popular pet lizards. Decades of breeding leopard geckos under human care have produced geckos with extensive color and pattern variations, adding further to their popularity. These lizards are a first reptile pet for many, and their engaging characters attract the interest of many people who otherwise might not be interested in keeping reptiles.

Leopard geckos originally come from arid, rocky grassland regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, northwest India, western Nepal, and parts of Iran. These lizards are primarily insectivores, but they have been known to occasionally accept very small vertebrate prey under human care. Leopard geckos store fat in their tails, which can function as energy reserves in times of low food availability in their hot and dry native habitat.

Cove, Bali, Toast, Snow, and Fable are still looking for their forever homes and have gotten so big and healthy over the last few months. More I updates will be coming soon!

Update: Snow is looking SO much better 🤍 Fable is also doing very well but is a sleepy butt and is refusing the press at this time.

They are both eating well, exploring, climbing, and great with handling. We’re excited to see what the future holds for these beautiful boys!

We got in two male leopard geckos on 5/19. We were up until like 2 am dealing with wounds and stuck shed, and moving tanks around in the office to be able to accommodate these two. They were both in maybe 2 gallon enclosures at 100*. Both are super dehydrated and have burns, stuck shed, and open wounds. Not to mention, underweight. We have been needing to still do soaks to remove layers of stuck shed. The little guy with an overbite isn’t able to grab insects because of his overbite, so he is hand fed only. We’ve named them Snow and Fable, and just from the 19th, they already look SO much better. Say hi, guys!

This is amazing news! Hellbender salamanders' have been threatened in Missouri due to habitat changes, bad water quality, disease, over-collection, and predators. The Saint Louis Zoo and MDC hatchery have bred and released over 10,000 Ozark and eastern hellbenders. This is the first example of those captive-bred Hellbenders reproducing successfully in the wild!

Read the full story here:

Missouri hits significant milestone in endangered hellbender population recovery.

We are heartbroken and disturbed after seeing the tragic footage of the Florida Fish & Wildlife dispatching a gravid pet boa and 34 other pet snakes during a raid this past week. The footage can be seen on the USARK FL YouTube channel along with a detailed call to action in the description of the video.

Warning! The footage is extremely disturbing.

Why are we sharing this?

These are animals, that someone deeply cared for, as you do for your animals. Regardless of your position on any of the species from the video, we hope that you share our love for all animals and can see this egregious act as a blatant display of incompetence and disregard.

Although these animals are not what our company is known for, and may not be an animal you keep, this is important to both ourselves and you. We are reptile lovers before keepers and are part of a greater community that is under scrutiny and pressure from forces that do not share our love, passion, or understanding of these animals.

It is important that we hold law enforcement agencies and individuals accountable for following the law. Additionally, we must hold our elected officials responsible for the administrations they oversee.

Just got in some beautiful Armadillidium peraccae and Porcellionides pruinosus “powder blue” isopods in today from Dubia.com. It was our first order from them and we couldn’t be happier with the quality of isopods, dubias, nutrigrubs, and other items that we ordered. Plus fast shipping! We’ll be starting a few new colonies of clean up crews and our geckos will be VERY happy with their dinner 🦎🐛

Little Cove came in thin and dehydrated, but they're now ready to find their forever home! At the last weigh-in, we got her up to 7g! Cove loves mealworms, crickets, dubias... really anything that moves. Good with hand feeding (or hunting) but still a little skittish with handling. Send a message for more detail or photos! 🥰

There is a small adoption fee, but a care package will be provided.

This is a Central American Banded Gecko (Coleonyx mitratus) photo from Bryan D. Hughes. This nocturnal, terrestrial species is native to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Like some other lizards, these geckos have developed a defense mechanism called caudal autotomy, or "tail dropping." When threatened, it is able to "drop" its tail, which then writhes to distract predators so the lizard can escape. While not all can, this species can regenerate some of the tail, but it will never fully resemble the original.
