Greenhouse Garden

Greenhouse Garden 🌻 A NeighborSpace-protected community garden in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood, open to all. 🌻

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Greenhouse Garden is that it lacks any sort of fence or barrier around its perimeter, giving the message that the garden is open to anyone who wishes to enjoy its refuge. It is a fitting testament to the garden’s origins. “About 20 years ago the lot was basically a garage – neighbors parked and repaired their cars there,” says community leader James

(JW) Glass. “The City owned it, then one day they installed some railroad ties around the perimeter to keep the cars out. Once the cars were gone some unknown neighbor ventured out there and planted some tomatoes and tended them in the weeds and trash.” The efforts of that unknown individual eventually evolved into a neighborhood-wide endeavor to clean up the lot and establish a “real” community garden, open to anyone. NeighborSpace became involved in 1998 when the City put the lot up for sale and an alert neighbor saw the listing and contacted the organization about purchasing the land. The community rallied around the effort and not long after, Greenhouse Garden officially belonged to the neighborhood. The garden is as diverse as the West Town residents who gather every Sunday afternoon to work in it – literally every available space is occupied by something growing, from vegetables and fruit trees and bushes to flowers, herbs and towering prairie grasses.

Edit: after having our wood chips person check out the wood chips pile and speaking to a couple experts, it is most likely that what people are thinking is smoke is actually steam coming off the pile as decomposition of organic materials such as wood chips creates heat. With the temperature difference between day & night, this steam could be easily interpreted as smoke. Don't worry though, we are doing to continue to monitor & investigate.

--------------

Yes, we know that the fire department has been called 2x regarding the wood chips. We are working on figuring out a solution.

We've had wood chips delivered many times over the past 20+ years of the garden and have never had this problem before so it is a little scary!

At the very least, our fall work day is this Saturday 10/26 when we will use the wood chips in the garden. That being said, we don't want to endanger the community so will follow the advice of our parent organization on what to do.

A big thank you to all of our wonderful neighbors for keeping an eye on things and reaching out to us. We appreciate you!

Hello Friends!

Are you a friend in the neighborhood who has enjoyed the beauty, lushness, and peace of Greenhouse Garden at the corner of Thomas & Wood?

Does your child look forward to visiting the goose at the corner on your daily walks? Do you look forward to seeing what sweet outfit the goose may be sporting at your next sighting?

Have you sat at the picnic table under the grape arbor and enjoyed time with friends? Have you helped yourself to some herbs from our community herb garden? Or maybe even picked a sweet bouquet of flowers?

If you have enjoyed all of these wonderful experiences that we help bring to you and our neighborhood, please help by donating to us for future projects as well as our regular garden care. Gardeners pay for all costs out of their own pockets. We could use your support to keep the garden the lovely community space it is.

All money will be put in our Greenhouse Garden account at NeighborSpace, our parent organization, to fund our seasonal expenses and projects. NeighborSpace is a nonprofit urban land trust in Chicago that preserves and sustains gardens on behalf of dedicated community groups.

Garden leader Siri attended a pollinator workshop a few weeks ago at the Garfield Park Conservatory and we wanted to share a few notes to help make your garden pollinator-friendly space!

Tip #1 - Plant pollinator-friendly companion plants near your veggies to attract, not only pollinators but other supporting insects that will prey on pests that want to feed on your crops!

Tip #2 - Place a water source in your plot for bees. This can be a little dish with a floating cork or pebbles for your insects to drink off of.

Tip #3 - Add a pile of twigs or pulled weeds to your plot that you will not move to create an environment for your pollinator friends to hide/live in!
