We are getting ready for Open House Chicago by showing the art that will be displayed at The Coop in Herban Produce! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​🌱 Throwback to our Farm-to-Turntable event in the middle garden, where house music met food in perfect harmony. Those 15 raised beds? They provided fresh produce to local businesses every two weeks! Our patio has changed since then, but now, our outdoor production area has grown to over 20,000 sq ft of space, and our middle garden is a lush urban oasis. 🎶🌿

If you've ever wanted to tour our farm, now is the time. We were chosen as a site for Open House Chicago! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Join us, on October 14-15 from 10 am- 2 pm. We will be stationed to talk about the concept behind the farm and ways you can stay connected. Of course, good vibes and activities for the kiddos will be included. We will also, be showing off our newly updated interior space!

Food on the Farm: The Chilhuacle Negro Pepper! This ancient, rare pepper is from the region of Oaxaca in Mexico and is one of the new specialty varieties that Lucia Leon, our Farm Manager, tested out this year! With strong notes of cocoa, to***co and dry fruit, it is moderately hot. This chile is the cornerstone of authentic Oaxacan mole negro! We love to experiment with new specialty crops here on the farm, and a new favorite we have been growing the Belgium Endive! This veg shines when baked, grilled, braised, or eaten raw in a crudités platter, so versatile! Do you have a favorite way to devour these or have a recommendation for some other new crops we should try out in our experimentation plot next season?

Happy Honey Bee Day! 🐝 🍯 We are so happy to have hives here on the farm thanks to the help from . This last year we collected 50lbs of honey from our first harvest and we are working on getting that prepared to be able to share with you!

Today we want to encourage everyone to enjoy and buy locally grown honey wherever you live, and Chicago has several local honey providers from bees buzzing around the city.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Honey bees are so important to the ecosystem and we are proud to be among others in Chicago providing them with a supportive environment. When we plant wildflowers, orchards, and other flowering plants, we support pollinators such as honey bees. They depend on the nectar of a variety of plants for their survival. Conversely, we depend on honeybees for our survival, too! Without their pollinating abilities, many nutritious plants wouldn’t reproduce. Did you know that flavors of honey vary depending on the variety of flowers and nectar available to the bees. Clover, alfalfa, lavender, orange, and chestnut are just a few!

Some ways to observe the holiday below:
- Collect and spread local wildflower seeds to promote honey bee pollination.
- Replace your usual sweetener with honey for the day. Taste the difference!
- Give the gift of honey to a friend, neighbor, co-worker or family member.
