NATURAL NUTRIENT RELEASE (Algae)

The utilization of nutrient removal with macroalgae has been widely accepted in the hobby. However, a novel method, the founder of Elegant Corals pioneered and religiously practiced since 2002, has been to grow chaeto or the ATS 24/7 until it reaches a critical mass. At this point we continue feeding the system as normal but slowly decrease the lighting duration to the refugium or ATS system. This allows the chaeto or turf to slowly die off, releasing nutrients back into the water column and also reducing the uptake time for the chaeto to photosynthesize.

Lately, many hobbyists are experiencing low nutrient to ultra low nutrient levels. Why? Because of over skimming, uncontrolled po4 extraction by means of lanthanum chloride or GFO, or 24/7 nutrient extraction by overly efficient Algae Turf Scrubbers.

Why skim, extract, or dose carbon in a low nutrient environment? The point is, you shouldn't have to and in order to keep aeration high, we utilize fresh air bubbling in lieu of running the skimmer, which allows for efficient gas exchange while allowing the bacteria and nutrients to remain in the system.
