Red Door

Red Door Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter that rescues dogs, cats and rabbits Since the Middle Ages, a red door has been the symbol of a safe haven.
(289)

This is what Red Door Animal Shelter provides for the animals in its care. In the Chinese art of feng shui, a red door brings luck to those who live behind it. This is what Red Door wants for the animals in its care. Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter committed to helping animals in need. Its primary focus is on the rescue, shelter and adoption of cats, dogs and rabbits—the three most po

pular pets in the United States. Red Door provides a cageless environment for its animals, giving them the closest-to-a-home experience that a shelter can provide. While our emphasis is on re-homing the animals through resourceful adoption programs, the shelter does offer permanent residence for those few animals not placed in homes. Furthermore, Red Door is one of only five no-kill, multi-species shelters in the country that admits rabbits as well as cats and dogs, spays/neuters them and places them up for adoption. Every year, Red Door rescues and finds homes for hundreds of abused and abandoned animals. Red Door is a 501(c)(3) organization. We receive no federal, state, county or city money. We are funded by private donations and grants from private foundations. Red Door was founded in 1998, under the name Chicago Community Humane Center. In January 2000, an adoption center was opened on the far north side of Chicago, in the West Ridge/Rogers Park neighborhood. In June 2002, the shelter's name was officially changed to Red Door Animal Shelter to better reflect the vision of the organization. In February 2003, Red Door expanded its adoption center; the address of the new adoption center is 2410 W. Lunt, Chicago.

In memory of an angel rescued as a stray in late 2019 and loved by the Millers:

"Nothing could have prepared us for Bobka, she was stunning. Her beautiful silky black fur and twinkling eyes. She was energetic, playful, and sooo soft. We knew we had to take her home.

"From that moment, our lives changed completely. Bobka became the highlight of our days and our favorite topic of conversation. She started sleeping under my parents bed and would nub their ankles. She’d zoom out from under the bed and binkied around our dining room at the sound of Romain lettuce being rinsed in the sink. She’d dance, run, and jump around in circles when we came to give her the plate. She was so stinking cute, it hurt. Eventually we decided to get our second bun, Aramis.

"They were an adorable pair and loved eachother very much. Bobka was very close to me and showed a lot of affection in return. Whenever I walked past a room she was in, she’d come running out after me. We got into our own little routine: She’d run out looking for me, I’d follow her to a spot on the carpet and pet her, she’d run to the wall and enthusiastically flop, I’d rub her checks and she’d grind her teeth. We’d do this a couple of times a day. Bobka was my best friend who blessed our home for 5 years, and our lives forever. She passed away on December 8th at the emergency vet. We held her for the last time, rubbing her cheeks like she always loved, and said a painful goodbye.

"We keep her ashes and paw print right next to the treats she loved so much, watching over her husbun Aramis. I’d like to thank the wonderful people at Red Door for rescuing and taking care of her. For a tiny creature who hardly made any noise, our home feels so empty without her. To Bobka- thank you for being our sweet girl. I feel your love and presence in all of the small, quiet, beautiful things in this world. I love and miss you so much, my heart aches. I still wait for you to come running out after me and look for you in all your favorite spots.
Rest in peace little Bobsies,"

The count thus far:

Tarragon and Sorrel were found in a parking lot in Rolling Meadows by a good Sam who was kind to foster them for a month until we had space. The brothers started fighting when they arrived at the shelter so we had to separate them. ☹️

Coriander is an extra large harlequin New Zealand red mix. Stunning in her size and beauty. She was abandoned at CACC, cramped in a small cage, until we could take her in.

Bibi had a long journey to us. She was originally transferred from ACS to the Moon Dog Farm. Through no fault of her own, she was adopted and returned twice. She's now at Red Door to find herself a husbun.

Honey was rescued as a little baby in Kenosha Wisconsin. Her owners moved away and "released" all of their rabbits. All but Honey had been caught by another rescue. Expert rabbit catcher, Lorianne, was called in to save this last little angel.

Evergreen had a harrowing rescue in Evergreen Park. He was hiding in bushes on a median in the middle of busy traffic. With no help from local authorities, the Dumped Bunny team and several good Sams saved this bun by stopping traffic, setting up multiple xpens, and corralling him safety.

🌈Today we remember a sweet and silly little Dutch girl named Rutuu who came to us in 2017. We are very grateful that long time Red Door adopter, Teresa, gave her a loving home, a husbun, and this perfect eulogy.

"When I was ready to adopt several months after my last bunny passed, I knew I wanted a bonded pair. At Red Door, I fell in love with Ethan (Coney) immediately, and as we were deciding who to pair him with, Ruutu kept sticking her nose out of the pen next to him, as if to say “pick me!” As soon as we put them together we knew it was love. They were the perfect couple for the next 7 years.

"Ruutu was the most dignified bunny while still being the messiest eater, loudest snorer and hilariously klutzy. She was the sweetest bunny with the most expressive big brown eyes who loved a good cuddle and would even tooth purr while getting groomed. She was a daredevil and afraid of nothing, always the first to explore a new space or situation.

"Ruutu was queen bunny and Coney knew his place in their relationship (giving her kisses). They were ALWAYS together—cuddling and exploring, with Ruutu taking the lead and Coney following. They were inseparable and adorable together.

"Goodbye my BG (Baby Girl)… I am so grateful to have been your hoomin. I'm sure you are being an all-around boss bunny and binkying up a storm over the Rainbow Bridge with Bungie, Cinnabun and Bellamy."

💔It pains us to post this memorial. We rescued a harlequin dwarf in October, and he was soon bonded to his doppelgänger. "Wooli" spent the last two months, cuddling and grooming his new bunwife and being adored by his bun mom.

"Wooli loved to jump on my bed and groom my plushies and it melted my heart. He actually loved to groom anything in sight that smelled like someone he loved. He would love to lick my face and groom his wifebun Millie. He was the sweetest baby I've ever had."

Wooli deserved to live a long, happy life with his new family, but unfortunately, he passed from a rare condition called liver lobe torsion. We are grateful that he at least had a couple months in a loving home rest in peace, beautiful little boy. We hope you are doing Binky's in a Clover field at the rainbow Bridge.🌈

"My heart has joined the thousand for my friend stopped running today"

Today we remember a handsome REW named Picaro (formerly Wonton at the shelter). He was surrendered to animal control in early 2020, then transferred to Red Door. We all fell in love with this big goofball, and we were thrilled when he was adopted a few months later by sisters Jackie and Rubi.

"We adopted a year after the passing of our first rabbit, and we can honestly say that Wonton brought back our happiness. He was running in circles inside his crate while we met other rabbits that sat still. We just knew he was the one by his silly personality. He was such a big boy but always a baby to us. He was hungry 100% of the time and enjoyed naps on the couch every now and then. He was a biter! and rarely gave kisses haha. This is partly why he was named “Pícaro” which means a naughty kid. Nevertheless, he was very loved by everyone in the family. He left us so much sooner than expected and we just hope it was the best decision for his sake. "

Thank you ladies for giving this bun the best 4 years of his too short life. ❤️🐇

Happy Furever home Friday!
Cinnamon and Sugar (puff) were two of the friendliest and snuggliest cats at Red Door. Their furever includes small humans that are great fun to cuddle with, and a dog with whom they enjoy taking afternoon naps. Sometimes, if nobody is around, they hold paws while napping ❤️

🌈❤️
Today we remember Ogee, a petite English spot mix who was rescued in May. This little guy was found roaming in a rural area and taken in by a good Samaritan. When she brought him to our shelter, he was emaciated, covered in ticks...and microchipped!

That chip traced to a rescue in Tampa Bay Florida and we soon got contact information for the owner. Turns out the owner had moved to Illinois and had no qualms keeping her "friend" outside. In the wild. With no food. Or shelter. And she had the gall to want the rabbit back.

Needless to say, we were not gonna send this rabbit back to such horrible conditions. It took a couple months to get him back to health and he soon found a new home with a loving young lady to care for him.

But all that time outside had taken its toll. This little rabbits digestive system was wrecked, and he eventually succumbed to it. Though he only had a few months in his home. It's obvious he was happy there. Safe from predators and parasites. Thank you Fry family for giving him the love he deserved. 💔

Tater was just a tiny baby when he was found in an Aldi parking lot by Lorianne, who was coincidentally on her way Red Door with 2 other rescued buns. Tiny tater had to wear the world's smallest cone of shame after getting bitten on the lip.

Toast was rescued in Sandwich by the DB group. He was originally purchased from Rural King and left to roam outside, as was the custom in the owner's home country.

Mugwort was picked up by Chicago Animal Control on the south side of the city. We can't imagine who would abandon such a handsome and charismatic bunny.

Houdini was found in Dekalb by the DB team. Thank you Caren for fostering him until we had space. He was so lucky to go from the hell of the wild to the comfort of a couch by the Christmas tree.

Lavender was found by a family in Highland Park. They kept him for a week while they searched for his family, but to no avail. Turns out this guy was already neutered, but not chipped. Too bad we can't trace where he came from.

Garlic was found in Roger's Park by good Sams. He looks exactly like our Goblin, who was also found in RP. 🤔 hmm, wonder who would be selling blue eyed dwarf-Dutch mixes in our area?
