Sundays are for skill-building!
This morning, Dr. Maddie Benjamin and Dr. Angie Duke spent their time in the hospital doing hands-on training for advanced dental extraction techniques. At Duke Animal Hospital, we believe that learning never ends! Our commitment to providing the highest level of care for your pets drives us to continually refine our skills through hard work and experience. Healthy mouths free of diseased teeth lead to healthier organs and, ultimately, longer lives for your beloved pets!

Duke Animal Hospital is committed to excellence, one weekend at a time! ✈️ For the past two years, Dr. Duke and all of our associate veterinarians have dedicated weekends to participating in 16-hour training seminars at the International Veterinary Dental Institute in Atlanta. This past weekend, Dr. Duke had the honor of learning from leading board certified veterinary dental expert, Dr. Brett Beckman at the IVDI, as well as his instructors Dr. Jodi Reed and Dr. Carolyn Lariviere, in an advanced oral surgery lab focused on complex procedures including oral tumor removal, cleft palate repair, fracture stabilization, and tongue resections.

At Duke Animal Hospital, we believe our patients deserve the best, which is why we are constantly seeking out advanced training to bring expert and specialized dental care right to our patients. Dentistry isn’t just a passion of ours; it’s essential for your pet’s long-term health. Better oral health means better organ health, ultimately leading to longer, happier lives for the pets we love.

Every hour spent in these labs is an investment in the level of care we can offer our patients here at Duke Animal Hospital, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to keep learning and growing as dental practitioners.

Thank you for trusting us with your pets’ health—we’re always here, striving to give them the best possible care.

Duke Animal Hospital has expanded! It was a long process, and we’re nearly ready for our official open house. Stay tuned for the announcement!

Dr. Duke’s niece, Jessica Peters, and her husband, Joe Peters, own and operate Spoon River Bottom Wood & Metal. Joe is an incredibly talented metal and wood assemblage artist, and together they worked hard to create the custom paw prints shown here. These bold, bright white paw prints were designed to match Dr. Duke’s vision perfectly, helping our entrances and parking lot walls catch the eye and make a statement in the neighborhood. Thank you, Joe and Jessie, for crafting and installing these signature pieces that truly represent our hospital!

Please join us in welcoming our newest Associate Veterinarian to Team B, Dr. Madeline Benjamin! We are so excited to have her join our staff!

Dr. Benjamin's journey into veterinary medicine is a testament to her unwavering passion for animal care. Graduating with a Major in Biology and Minor in Chemistry from the University of Iowa, Dr. Benjamin's early experiences at a veterinary clinic solidified her dedication to the field. Pursuing her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, she immersed herself in various endeavors, including serving as Vice President of the Human-Animal Bond Association. Her commitment extended beyond academia as she collaborated with prisons, facilitating the pairing of inmates with shelter dogs for service dog training—an initiative showcasing her compassion and dedication to animal welfare.

During her collegiate journey, Dr. Benjamin also actively participated in the Veterinary Business Association and lent her expertise to the Wildlife Medical Clinic, further enriching her understanding of diverse aspects within the field.

Bringing her wealth of experience to our clinic, Dr. Benjamin is poised to forge meaningful connections with pet parents and their beloved companions. Her return to Chicago, accompanied by her beloved Fox Terrier/Pitbull mix, Noe, and her trusty bearded dragon, Lady, underscores her deep-rooted ties to the community.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Benjamin finds solace in the outdoors, culinary adventures, and the gripping narratives of horror thrillers.

There are more and more corporate chain veterinary clinics and "urgent care centers" popping up all around the north side of Chicago. Over the last few years, many of the neighborhood's longstanding veterinary hospitals have sold to corporations without changing the clinic name in order to keep their sale of ownership to corporate away from public knowledge.

Duke Animal Hospital remains as an independent and locally owned practice. Dr. Duke is a home owner and resident of the 47th Ward, a parent in the school community, an active member of her neighborhood, and a local business owner.

Corporate ownership in veterinary medicine, and other areas of healthcare, is rapidly expanding. This trend is evident in the proliferation of new corporate chain clinics throughout our neighborhood and the quiet sale of previously privately owned practices to corporations. It's crucial for pet parents who value independent, locally owned practices to be aware of this shift, particularly those who prioritize supporting locally owned medical establishments.

Meet Luna and Charlie Moe, the stars of our Cute Puppy Day at Duke Animal Hospital! Luna, the tiny 3 pound Pomeranian, strutted around with sass and a bounce in her step that defies gravity. Charlie Moe, the 4- month-old Cockapoo, melted our hearts with his playful energy. Both pups got a clean bill of health from Dr. Caraline Nack, but not before charming everyone on our team!
