How many toes does this kitten have? Cats and kittens normally have 18 toes (5 on each front paw, 4 on each back paw) and this polydactyl kitten has more than usual. All the more toe beans to love!

This kitten has her extra toes on the inside of her feet, which is called preaxial. Most polydactyl cats have their extra toes on their front paws only and it’s very rare to have them on all four paws so this girl is very special. To nerd out a little: Polydactyly is an autosomal dominant genetic trait caused by a change in a genetic enhancer that affects how the (get this) Sonic Hedgehog gene is expressed in limbs. If one parent cat has this condition, up to 50% of the kittens will have the same thing.

Historically, polydactyl cats were considered good luck by sailors and prized for their extra toes in order to catch more mice on ships. The author Ernest Hemingway also loved cats with extra toes, so you might hear some people refer to them as “Hemingway cats.”

Bundle up for this weekend!

We hope everyone stays warm and cozy for the cold weather. Keep in mind that if you’re cold outside, your pets are probably cold too. Unless you have a dog that loves cold weather like a Husky or Malamute, most dogs appreciate a coat and sometimes either booties or paw wax. Take care to help older dogs or those with arthritis to avoid ice and prevent injuries from slipping. Walks can be a little shorter when temperatures dip below 30 degrees and having pets walk in the parkway grass can help them avoid salt on the sidewalk. Be sure to use a washcloth to wipe paws clean of any ice or salt when you come back inside and make sure to dry off any melted snow before getting cozy again.

If you visit the frozen beach, be sure to stay off dangerous shelf ice that forms along the beach on Lake Michigan. While these formations are intriguing for dogs and people, they are very unstable and break easily into the cold water.

Community and feral cats deserve some winter care too! Check the comments for ideas on outdoor housing and heated water bowls for our rat-hunting friends. Making noise on the hood of your car before starting it can help scare away any cats that found a warm spot near the engine.

What a perfect time to snuggle up and rest from a spay or neuter. Picture it: time off to relax, movies and blankets on the couch, doctor’s orders to stay quiet and mostly indoors, and a little accessory called a cone. Call or email to set up an appointment and get those dogs and cats spayed or neutered! We’re running this special until the end of the year.

Just a heads up, we'll be closed in observation of Thanksgiving on 11/28/24. We'll be back on 11/29/24 during our normal operating hours.

Friendly PSA, your Thanksgiving dinner is not a dog or cat treat. You've been warned.

Next up in our Flora and Fauna series for houseplants and pets is ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). This plant is toxic to dogs and cats because it contains calcium oxalate crystals like the monstera plant we posted about earlier. Let’s say it’s just a little *spicy*.

Calcium oxalate crystals are needle shaped, so they cause a lot of irritation when the leaves or stalks of the plant are chewed. This can lead to oral irritation such as drooling, pawing at the mouth, and can also lead to vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Some pets experience an intense reaction and need a little help here at the clinic. Some pets will nibble on leaves (like Dr. Erin’s cats) and may or may not learn their lesson when they vomit those later.

Thankfully, the ZZ plant doesn’t cause a deadly reaction, so you can still keep these around your home with a little caution. Keeping them in a difficult to reach window like our back office, a hanging basket, or a closed off room can help ensure pets stay safe while you enjoy some plant benefits.

Finally got our community board up! We envisioned this board in this little alcove when we first started to renovate the clinic and it’s finally done. She hot glue-gunned together like a RPDR sewing challenge gown, but she holding it together better than any of this past week. Stop by to check out local Uptown happenings or to drop off something you want to share. Community seems more important now, than ever.

Ps. Please don’t come for us , we love you girl! 😂

Rounding out our week, we are also shouting out to our client care coordinator, Elizabeth! You can find her at the front desk, managing phone calls, emails, and clients in person. Elizabeth also speaks Spanish and helps us translate during appointments so we can provide care to more patients. She’s been a seamless addition to our team, relaying a myriad of advice when we can’t always pick up the phone. Elizabeth is engaging, efficient, diligent, and wears many hats to add so much to our tiny team. She has experience in different animal related jobs, including emergency and specialty medicine.

We’re continuing our recognition posts for and we wanted to give a HUGE shout out to our technician, Brooce. Brooce has been with us for almost 9 years and she never fails to bring the party to work. She has a wide range of experience from general practice and specialty med to shelter medicine and even animal control. She is incredibly hard-working, dedicated, empathetic, and intuitive. We’re so lucky to have her. She’s also a huge nerd when it comes to virus’, especially rabies. Brooce is finishing up the last requirements of her tech program and will soon be a Certified Vet Tech and we couldn’t be more proud. Please enjoy some of these current and throwback photos to when we were all just some wee babes.

Looking for a plant that is safe for pets? Hoya, aka wax plant are considered non-toxic for dogs and non-toxic for cats. They have thick leaves that love bright, indirect light. Make sure nibbling on those leaves stays in moderation. Pets can still experience stomach upset, or vomiting and diarrhea, if they eat or chew on too much of them. That’s easy enough for us to handle at the clinic so give us a call if it happens! You can try to spray the leaves with a bitter yuck spray to stop pets from chewing on the leaves, as long as they don’t develop a taste for that flavor.

Enjoy these Hoya plants we have decorating our separate cat-friendly waiting area!
