I am usually the 1st to joke about how the weather is never as bad as they report it. But I also can't ignore when something is reported as unusually bad. Last night's storm was pretty intense. And there is the potential for it to be worse tonight.

So please take the necessary precautions now. Ready the crates, put on collars w/ ID tags (make instant tags at petco, petsmart, Krisers, Jewel), have water, flashlights/candles, etc. Make sure your personal devices are fully charged. Do not drive if it can be helped.

Take the dogs out early. Give any pets that need it - CBD, xanax, trazadone, gabapentin, etc. Secure your windows so no cats are escaping in a panic through a screen or porch. Use white noise machines or soothing sounds.

Better yet, secure all pets into a safe space or room if the storm does look bad - crates, bathrooms, inner gated off hallway, basements, bedroom (close windows), etc.

Due to the heat & risk of power outage, freeze bags of water so you have the ability to keep yourself & Pets cool.

And keep an eye out for flooding in or near your homes/buildings.

Well I'm doing it again!!! I'm jumping into Lake Michigan with the Chicago Polar Bear Club, NFP. As we embrace the heart of winter, Da Vinci Paws is thrilled to announce our participation in the 23rd Annual Polar Bear Plunge on January 27th. This marks our 5th year of braving the chilly waters, and we're more excited than ever!

And I am delighted to have my friend Lorna Juett join us again this year!

This year, we're not only supporting the brave Polar Bears at the Chicago Polar Bear Club (learn more at [www.chicagopolarbearclub.com]), but we're also diving into a concurrent fundraiser for the incredible work done by the Network For Animals, a global animal welfare organization (discover their impact at [www.networkforanimals.org]).

Let me share a story that goes beyond just walking dogs and petting cats; it’s about truly understanding them.

Yesterday I was at a picnic in Rogers Park. I was there with my two furry companions – Jasper and Chaucer. They immediately fell in love with a guest’s two very young children. The children enthusiastically played fetch with them.

I watched on with their father as his kids & my dogs played in the big open field. While chatting he expressed his frustrations with his youngest dog still peeing in the house. I asked him a few questions about the dog's behavior, potty-training progress & affirmed this was lazy peeing, not incontinence or weak bladder control. So, I asked him – “Have you heard of Belly Bands?” He hadn’t. I went on to explain they were rectangular wraps with Velcro to be snuggly secured around the dog’s lower abdomen. It's a great deterrent to lazy peeing as it would feel unnatural to the dog with the pressure of the wrap. He laughed a little, “Oh I bet those would work within a week or so!” We continued chatting and watching our respective kids play.

Later, he looked over to me and asked, “So what do you do professionally?”. Upon telling him I owned a dog walking & cat sitting business, he grinned, “I was wondering earlier how you just seemed so innately knowledgeable about dogs, more so than a typical pet owner.” I chuckled and said, “Yeah, I’ve been working with animals my whole life, so it’s a lot of learned and accumulated knowledge.”

It's in my nature to want to foster a stronger bond between pet owners and their beloved animals. I simply want to help them. I see solutions to challenges when I meet and talk with folks. There’s nothing better than seeing light bulbs, & hearing sighs of relief coming from owners who want the best & deepest relationships with fur-kids.
