Healthy Fare for Kids Our mission is to get healthier meals accessible to kids everywhere while building a channel of wholesome, sustainable food to supply those meals.

As a passionate home chef, mom and health educator, I want to help you feed your family healthy, delicious meals every day … or at least a few days out of the week. Feeding your children healthy food in proportional amounts is your best insurance for preventing a trail of chronic diseases from following them into adulthood. Isn’t that what we want for our children? The foundation of a happy life b

Since 2011, we’ve been asking Chicago’s food community to create healthy and delicious meals for children following the Healthy Fare for Kids nutritional guidelines, which promotes using food grown and produced with sustainable practices. We ask for meats and poultry to be raised without the use of antibiotics. We want fresh, organic ingredients, grown and produced locally, to be your first choice. And we hope visiting your local farmer’s market will become part of your healthy lifestyle. Along with many restaurants who offer a Healthy Fare for Kids meal on their menu, we are now a part of the Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, Brookfield Zoo and Cibo Express Market in O’Hare International Airport. Today, the Healthy Fare for Kids logo appears next to menu items and on grab-and-go containers throughout Chicago where it’s seen by over 40 million people each year. Our featured recipes are meals created in our Healthy Fare for Kids kitchen or by our co-founder Chef Sarah Stegner (a two-time James Beard award winner) or by a number of celebrity chefs like Rick Bayless, Beverly Kim, Bruce Sherman, Paul Kahan, Paul Virant and many more. Hi Steve! I wanted to give a shout-out to a new food MUST - Salsa’s Family Market at 4852 N. Damen. The lively Latino tunes piped out to the sidewalk caught my ear this week after a visit to the dentist. The store is like walking into a local market in Mexico with fresh food to go as well as produce, groceries and meat/poultry. I picked up some homemade guacomole and pozole. I chose the chicken pozole in red broth - but their is pork in red or green pozole, too, along with a side of avocado and veggies as garnishes for the soup. IT WAS ALL SUPERB! I thought the liveliness of the place along with the warmth and vitality of the family owners as well as the authentic, delicious food might be a good find for you as we approach Cinco de Mayo. There is also a very touching family story behind this market. It will be worth every minute for you.

One of my lazy night go-tos, Big Apple Pancake from Epicurious https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Big-Apple-Pancake-230981 . I omit the sugar and have used blueberries or strawberries instead of apples which is delicious but turns the pancake a vivid color.

The pancake always puffs but I put in a little too much butter this time and got dramatic results!

Lunch at The Gundis was another exotic and delicious visit to this Kurdish restaurant in Lincoln Park, Chicago. The flavors of the food are surprisingly zesty and delightful ... like the ZaZa omelette or the Mountain Salad. And the Kurdish coffee is fantastic! Rich decaf expresso with a pistachio kick.
