Student spotlight! We are so proud of Remi, whose mom wasn't sure he would ever be ready for group class because of his dog reactivity. Check out trainer Coralyn teaching Cupid the "sit pretty" trick. The first "puppy crunches" drill is a good introduction to this skill. Duration can be built by holding out on the reward and/or rapidly feeding in place. Resist the temptation to put your hand too high! And make sure that your dog is sitting squarely. Sitting pretty with knees and feet splayed out to the side puts harsh and unnecessary stress on the joints. You may in fact have to work on sitting with good posture + building core strength in other ways before introducing sitting pretty.

Lilly is rocking polite greetings! We like routines that include waiting to be released to greet on cue and checking in with the handler to manage excitement.

Yay for toy play skills! Jude came to us only able to tug on stuffed animal-type toys, with a habit of biting hands while regripping, and increasingly developing conflict during trading for food. We've been working hard on tug mechanics that set his grip, teaching him how to regrip without traveling up the toy, playing with new (safer) toys, and conflict-free "all done" routines. Today, we started re-teaching "drop" via "switch." 👏🏻

Did you know that for some dogs, toy play can be the perfect reward for a job well done, even on walks? It can take some experimenting with types of toys and styles of play, but once you figure it out, it's all worth it!

One of Trainer Coralyn's favorite exercises is prompted attention -> unprompted attention off of distraction. We like to make sure a dog knows how to play this game in a sit-stay, a free-roaming stationary position, and in motion (like walking at the handler's side).
