There is a very difficult situation that we who have many fish have a hard time trying to avoid. Fish do not eat grains. No matter the how we treat the soy, the wheat, the rice or the other binder providing fillers fish simply do not have neither the micro bacteria nor the intestinal tracts to provide environment for the forms of microbes that can properly energize grains or fillers without causing serious issues to them. This causes concerns for most of the easy inexpensive quick to feed type products out there because these feeds were designed to add weight and market size to food product fish primarily and food product fish generally reach market size and then their lives are ended to feed people. In aquarium specimens we seek to offer the best life of longevity and health so these filler feeds show their effects upon our pets. It is the same in relation to dogs, for a long time we were told that these filler feeds were good for our dogs, now after years of issues with their skin, cancers, intestinal issues etc. we are looking with greater care into dog feeds. It is now time to look with greater care into the effects of filler feeds upon our pet fish. Difficult, yes, it is, and it will be difficult to produce or purchase feeds that are natural for fish. A more careful examination of gut content of fish in their natural waters and study of the available insects, algae, crustaceans and other feed forms is required to educate us as to what the optimum nutrition will be for our fish.
