Tater went to the vet today. His sheath has been swollen so he got his man parts scrubbed and the vet thinks he has allergies. So he got an allergy shot and some meds. He also has some arthritis in his back feet. She said his super long hooves can put alot of stress on the joints and cause this but there's really no way to know what caused it be cause we don't know his history. Tater will be staying with us until April 1st before he makes his journey home to the east coast. He really is a big teddy bear. 🧸

We had a break thru with Tex this morning! I've been training him on the bells that hang on the back door. You hit those bells, mom comes running to let you outside. He did it independently this morning and went outside and took a poo. Now lets pray he doesnt abuse them just because he wants to sun bathe 🤣 I'm so proud of him. He's comes to far in a few weeks. He has his second round of shots today.

Omg guys do you remember Mandi that we helped save from cleburne last year for BH? Look at her now. Sacred Acres did an amazing job rehabbing her. She hit the jackpot.

While the number of confirmed equine rabies cases every year is low, talking about this disease remains important because of the potential for human exposure—which does NOT have to involve a bite from an infected horse, as contact of skin or mucosa with the horse’s saliva could be enough to transmit the disease.

Rabies has many faces, but they are all deadly—once a horse shows clinical signs, the animal invariably dies within a few days as there is no treatment.

The good news is that modern vaccines are highly effective and current AAEP recommendations list rabies as one of the “core vaccines” that should be given to all horses annually to maintain immunity (read the full AAEP vaccination guidelines here: https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines).

Equine rabies is a real risk for all horses, and a public health concern as well. Be sure to set up a regular vaccination schedule with your veterinarian if you haven’t already done so. Remember that strange behavior on behalf of your equine friend is always a valid reason to check in with your horse doctor!

If you are an equine rescue or interested in becoming one this event is pretty neat. I just registered and am excited to learn techniques for adopting companion horses, marketing and fundraising and understanding capacity of care and pathway planning. 3 days of knowledge, I'm excited and yes a nerd 🤓.

Join us for a powerful three days of education, networking and inspiration with like-minded thought-leaders and ASPCA Right Horse Partners. Since the first event in 2019, the ASPCA Right Horse Summit has been a place to convene around our shared goal of increasing equine adoption, giving equine welf...

Tonight I want to introduce Jewel. Jewel was an owner surrender March 20, 2024. The owner called Diana DeeDee Darnall at Double D Animal Rescue however she was no longer taking in horses so she referred her to me. We were able to take Jewel and she was fostered at Sacred Acres for a few months before coming to be sanctuary here. I'm so grateful for Mark N Misty Armstrong for opening their home to Jewel and getting her vaccines and coggins done.
I was battling a court case at the time for a horse that was starved by the adopters and I was not in a good head space to trust anyone to ever adopt another animal from me ever again. I was angry, bitter and felt hopeless. So I stopped looking for a home for Jewel.
Jewel also has some behavioral and medical issues. She is a kicker! She doesn't do it because she's in pain, she does it if she senses any fear in the human and to test you. She also needs yearly hock and stifle injections to be trail sound. These run about $600. She got her injections, teeth done, vaccines, feet back on track and weight and muscle on and a refresher from our friends at One Ride Equine. Cassie Cummings discovered that Jewel loooovvveeesss the trails. But boy oh boy is she sassy. She will kick other horses on purpose so a super experienced rider is needed with her sassy pants.
So for now Jewel is sanctuary here because she is a liability as a kicker. Not to say I wouldn't adopt her out but it would have to be a very special situation with a very experienced horse person.
Other than that she is in your pocket, ready for love, hugs and treats. 🥰

UPDATE: WE MET THE HAY FUNDRAISER AND HAVE EXTRA FOR GAS TO GO GET CONCHO! MORE TO COME ON WHEN I CAN GET THERE. You guys! We got a call for an owner surrender. You will never believe it! I desperately want to help this boy live out his life here as a sanctuary horse. He has glaucoma and has already lost one eye. He is on daily medications as well for his eye and tummy issues. Before I can make arrangements to go pick him up 3.5 hours away in Oklahoma we need to reach our hay fundraiser. Remember we just got our 501c3 status so everything is tax deductible.
Concho needs us to be there for him. His owner is devastated and just wants him to be safe. She is unable to keep him safe with others who pick on his due to his vision issues. He would be buddies with Teddy as they look like twins!!! Wait when did I become an appy rescue? 🤣
Let's mark this hay fundraiser off the list so we can go pick this guy up!

Next I would like to introduce Ranger and Oakley. Ranger was adopted Feb 2021 and Oakley April 2021 from Partnering Together to Save At Risk Donkeys in Texas - DD Donkeys . Diana DeeDee Darnall taught me all about donkeys and I couldn't help but fall in love. This pair is inseparable and will always greet you when you come to the back pasture. Don't be afraid when you see butt's backing up. They won't kick, unless you refuse to scratch 😉🤣. I absolutely adore these 2 and was honored to be able to adopt them so that other donkeys could get much needed help from Diana. Oakley and Ranger are permanent sanctuary animals here on the farm. I hope you guys enjoy their shenanigans as much as I do.
